Optus Travel™ Pack vs Pay as you go

If your plan does not come with international roaming inclusions you can either purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack or choose to pay as you go.

Please note, international roaming needs to be switched on to use your service whilst overseas.

Optus Travel™ Pack

An Optus Travel™ Pack is designed to give you better value when using your phone whilst traveling overseas in Zone 1 countries. For more information on what’s included or how to add an Optus Travel™ Pack see this page.

If you exceed your Optus Travel™ Pack inclusions you will be charged at the standard roaming rates for any excess.  These rates can be found in the ‘International Roaming’ section of the My Optus app or via our website.

Pay as You Go

If your plan does not include any international roaming benefits, and you do not want to purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack or you’re visiting a country not covered by an Optus Travel™ Pack, you can just pay for what you use.

Pay as you go is charged at our normal roaming rates which can be found in the ‘International Roaming’ section of the My Optus app or via our website.

Please note, all pay as you go roaming usage is charged in addition to your normal monthly charges unless stated otherwise in your plan benefits. To check your plan inclusions, log in to your My Account and under the ‘Plan Info’ tab you can view the Critical Information Summary for your plan.

How to activate international roaming

International roaming can be turned on or off in the following ways:

Before you leave:

  • On your mobile phone using the My Optus app
  • Online through My Account
  • SMS ‘menu’ to 9999 and follow the prompts
  • Free call 1509 and follow the prompts

From overseas:

  • Online through My Account
  • By calling our international number from another service
    • +61 2 8082 5678, this number is free to call from an Optus mobile service with roaming activated

How to track usage while overseas
Via the My Optus App

You can track your estimated usage through the My Optus app in the ‘International Roaming’ section.

Please note, this is estimated usage only, and may take up to 48hrs or longer to appear.

Via My Account

You can track your estimated usage through My Account in the ‘Usage Summary’ section.

Please note, this is estimated usage only, and may take up to 48hrs or longer to appear.

SMS Alerts

You’ll receive an SMS alert in the following scenarios:

  • Purchased an Optus Travel™ Pack:
    • At 50%, 85% and 100% of your Optus Travel™ pack inclusion
    • For every $100 of excluded value (outside of Optus Travel™ Pack inclusions e.g. Zone 2, aerospace & maritime usage, excess after Optus Travel™ pack inclusions have been used)
  • Pay as you go:
    • For every $100 of roaming usage
  • Included plan benefit:
    • At 50%, 85% and 100% of your included allowance

Please note, alerts may be delayed as international roaming charges can take some time to come through.
