useage

Does anyone have any idea how I can possibly use 4.3 gig of wifi data in 4 hours?  I've checked and its definitely my modem which is locked so I don't think it has been hacked (but could be wrong, I had an IT specialist check my laptop and says that's not at fault).  I pay by the month, my monthly allocation reset on 27 Sep and I just got a notification that I've used 4 gig, I didn't even turn the modem on yesterday and all I've done today is play Pandora radio from 9-11am.  The radio streaming wouldn't even play after 11am as the internet reception was poor.  No other downloads at all, no-one but me using the laptop, aarrgghh.  Up until recently I never used more than 2 gig a month but in the past 3-4 months I've had to increase my plan to the most gig available and then still have to buy more.  Optus staff can't offer an explanation but imply that I'm downloading movies or similar, which I don't.  Does anyone else have this problem.

Re: useage

What sort of laptop are you using and what is the operating system. 4GB is easy to burn in a couple hours. Think I did double that in an hour last night.

Re: useage

I'm using an ASUS laptop running windows 10 (which I don't automatically update). The only site I have used on this is Pandora radio for 2 hours. I play it for the soothing music, nothing else, and on other days when I've done this there has been no noticiable increase in useage - I've checked the dates and times I've streamed the music against my bill.

Re: useage

Unless you run a metered connection or hack the update files Win 10 will continue to download updates. There was a recent upgade that was several GB in size that sent my data usage through the roof. Asuming it's not that have you changed your wireless password? I believe the My Account portal has data usage information and should give you an idea when the data was used.

Re: useage

Hi and thanks for your reply. Yes, I manually turned off the updates as advised by my IT guy as the updates used heaps of data. However, the large data useages are still continuing.

Re: useage

Hey @kmccoy2208! Are you using a mobile broadband or fixed broadband service via WiFi?

Re: useage

Hey @Katabaticinn, I'm just a little confused by your comment. Are you able to clarify this one for us? You've been charged for excess data usage? Are you also advising that the data was used whilst roaming internationally? Dan

Re: useage

I have had problems with data disappearing.  For years i haven't used more than 7GB a month. Suddenly last year my useage went up to over 15 20 GB. There was useage relating to iphone downloads. I dont have an iphone. After 4 months and huge bills and contacting optus repeatedly and generally being treated like im stupid  i got hold of someone who said change youre password.  I did and the excess useage stopped. I had been charged over $400 extra for the 3 months this happened. Optus as usual didnt give a stuff and said it was impossible anyone to access my data.
