I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I keep getting session timeout's when using Optus Webmail. I noticed it once a couple of weeks ago and thought it was strange because in all my many yrars with Optus I'd never been timed out of a webmail session. This morning it's happened twice, the second time when I was writing an extensive email and lost everything. What kind of crap is this in this day and age? I understand email timing out when there is no user input, but not when you are acrually typing. That's just down right dumb. At least I have now found the save setiing so when it happens again I should be able to recover my message. I just cant understand why this happens even when the webmail isn't idle.
Hi there symbiot911,
A simple way to overcome any more time-outs, is to create your message in say,
Notepad or your favourite text editor program & then copy & paste the
message into your web mail "Compose" screen.
That way, you've always got the original & can take as long as you like.
Easy peasy. 🙂
Yeah, I've seen that solution before. Nothing against you, but that has got to be the most ridiculous s solution to session timeouts that I've ever heard. Maybe a better solution would be for those idiots at optus to not timeout people when they are writing an email. It's just dumb, but typical of craptus. I simply downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird. I'll use that. Using an editor and copying and pasting is simply archaic. Sorry, I don't mean to sound ungrateful for you solution. It's just that one shouldn't have to worry about such silly stuff in this day and age. I've never once had timeouts up until the last couple of weeks.
The session timeout time out is currently set to 5 minutes.
There's no current save draft built-in, though we do constantly review features.
I can't really say how many resources we have devoted to increasing Optus webmail functionality but I can definitely go ahead and flag this post for feedback.
For the interim, could you use an email client other than https://webmail.optusnet.com.au i.e. Outlook, iOS mail or Windows Live Mail?
Session timeouts should be abolished.
When one is writing, coming to the end, press send, and wallah! it says "session timeout" to say it is frustrating is being polite.
This is the digitial age, what is the purpose of the session timeout when one is paying for the email service?
This 'workaround is defeatist and will ensure nothing ever gets done (which is the current situation).
I have been "working" with Cust support on numerous occasions. The answers fall into 3 categories :
1) There is no such thing as timeout..it is not supposed to happen (majority response)
2) There is a timeout and it's 3 minutes irrespective of if the time is idle or not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3) Do the copy and paste thing.
4) Webmail is free so don't expect anything. Ithink this answer could be contrary to the Consumer laws (previously the Trade Practices Act). It is not free ...it is part of a package and not able to be bought separately or maintained without that package.
EVERYONE of these reflect a dedication of great magnitude ...to mediocrity.
This issue goes back years and what I can ascertain, does not apply to all users !
Do Optus have a IT team ? If they put in a defective and unpopular Captcha system why can't they remove it? I worked for an IT company for numerous years and this would be unthinkable in any serious commercial company.
I believe Optus is spending large amounts of money s o as to avoid actually doing something about problems.
MY EXPERIENCE : Cust Care brings really polite people who, correctly express concern, but that is all. NOTHING EVER GETS FIXED. I have had tickets closed even though nothing has been done. I get SMS to say they cannot get hold of me on the phone, even though there's no missed call...and you cannot phone back !! If you do you get hold of another staff member and start the charade again. IT would be much faster if they would publish my 4 answers and just say "Number 4!).
I am doing an amazing job of understating my frustration...... Is there anyone in OPTUS management I could contact and/or send a letter ?
Hi @NI_HIL, sounds like a really poor experience so far, I'm very sorry to hear that you've had such a run around getting some help with the webmail issue.
We can check this out on our end to see what we can find and assist this way. Is it possible to reach out via the official Optus Facebook or Twitter with any reference numbers and details you have? Our team will verify your details there as we're unable to do so via this platform. We can then follow up on what's been happening.
