I am currently with Telstra and am looking at getting a Optus sim only plan with the same phone number as my Telstra account and am looking at the discount from ordering online, I am just worried that if I do order it online it will terminate my Telstra plan immediately and leave me unable to contact work or any one else, is this the case? Thanks for any help!

No, it will not terminate your service termination happens when you activate you Sim and ask Optus to port your number.
Just a gentle warning to ensure your phone is not locked to Telstra.

Thanks mate, out of contract period with Telstra and bought phone outright so all good on that front.
