Perth CBD poor signal

I am new to Optus and surprise to see only ONE bar signal of 4G in CBD Perth.

Is it a norm for Optus or something wrong.

Anyone have same issue?

Hi,

I work in Perth CBD, outdoors and most office buildings you can expect four to five bars signal strength with Optus.

What phone are you using?

Where are you experiencing low signal (indoors/basement etc)

Thanks Squizz, I am using iPhone 5, still having same issue, poor signals, I check around other people phone, show 2-3 signals. That day was at Mt Pleasant, it give SOS no signal. I finally opt out. Am surprise Optus signal is so bad.

OK, there are multiple iphone 5 models (thanks for the confusion apple).

You're unlikely to have a CDMA model unless you bought it in the US.

Looking at iphone 5 model a1429,

frequencycheck.com indicates it supports:

2G: 850, 900, 1900, 2100 of which none are now supported by Telstra/Optus as they've refarmed their 2G to 4G. Vodafone ceases 2G support on 31 March 2018.

3G: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 of which Optus supports 900

4G: 850, 1800, 2100 of which Optus has a few 2100 and legacy 1800 but all of their recent efforts have been on 700 and 2300 via acquisition of Vivid.

 

According to oztowers, the following Optus services are located around MtPleasant, I've struck out all the bands that are available from Optus but the iphone 5 a1429 doesn't have the required technologies to utilise.

As you can see older devices in good condition are simply missing out as telcos move to more efficient technologies to provide better coverage (B28 700MHz) and better speeds (B40 2300MHz, B7 2600MHz) available to more recent devices, not having 3G B1 2100MHz is a major disadvantage for the a1429 too.

 

Be aware you'll also run into similar issues with many foreign phones.

4G B4 & B12 are important for the US but negligible in most other places.

4G B20 is important for Europe but negligible in most other places.

4G B28 is important for Australia (Telstra&Optus) but negligible in most other places.

3G B1 & 3G B3 is important for Asia and reasonably supported globally.

4G B3 is important for Asia and reasonably supported globally usually paired with either B7 or B40.

 

'4G enabled' marketing hype isn't looking so clear-cut now is it?
