4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Hi,

i got an Optus 4g router (e5186) & an iPhone SE.

Having both sitting next to each other about 100m away from the tower, I get 60/30mbps on the iPhone and only 35/5mbps on the router?

am I doing something wrong or is the router just crap?

cheers

Andre

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Hey @NickName2017,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this.

This will depend on the spectrums the device can connect to.

You can check out more on the routers specifications here.

Further troubleshooting tips can be found here to see if this will help you receive higher speeds.

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Sorry,

but to everyday people those numbers make no sense at all!

its an OPTUS E5186 modem sitting next to an iPhone SE with Optus SIM card.

live chat thing wasn’t helpful either...

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Sorry for any confusion @NickName2017

There are different spectrum used for 4G than 3G and some devices aren't set up to access all these spectrum's.

If you're unable to contact our Live Chat team our 24/7 Tech team are also available on 131344 and can check this out further for you.

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Hi Marie (assuming you are working for Optus)

as as far as I can see from Optus website the E5186 supports Optus 4G plus. (And I bought it from Optus together with my Optus data only sim after advice from the Optus sales guy)

Are you saying that info given by Optus is incorrect and I need to learn about frequencies/spectrums/LTE classes ???

Yes, I contacted live chat - but they are useless.

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Basically there are the bands 700, 1800, 2300, 2600. The iphone might be locking onto 4 bands at the same time. The E5186 only does 2. It might also choose congested ones. The 2300 band has loads of capacity but may be gummed up by home wireless broadand product. 700 has lots of range, so tends to attract loads of poorly placed equipment.

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

Any 4g routers out there that are as good as an iPhone for data connection?

might sound stupid, but aren’t 4g routers build to do this one thing? Shouldn’t they be at least as good as phone that does a million other things?

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

iPhones are $1500 or something.

You need to find a cat 11 modem. They aren't cheap.

Re: 4g modem way slower than iPhone?

I have an iPhone SE - $550

Optus charges 24x $20 for an E5186 = 480$

70$ more for heaps more features....

I guess I can get an Android phone with the same 4G features for less money (sorry not familiar with android models and features)
