I am not currently an Optus subscriber so I have downloaded the App and clicked the No option when trying to get started with the App.
I enter my mobile number and receive the 4 digit verification code.
But there is no where to enter this. I can only close the screen where the mobile number is submitted.
Any ideas how to proceed?

I uninstalled and reinstalled form the link, which was the same as my original install.
Click on GET STARTED, then NO (for not being current Optus Customer), next screen asks for my mobile number, click on SUBMIT, then the verification code comes through after a couple of minutes but the screen stays on the submit mobile number screen, no option to enter the verification code anywhere.
If I close the submit mobile number screen with the X on the top left corner, it just goes back to the Get Started sccreen.
@gembrook, which model of iPhone are you currently using?
Are you using a handset with iOS 9.0 or above?
It might be worth trying the following:
Settings → General → iPhone storage → Scroll down to the Nat Geo Application → Install → Reinstall from the app store.
