Speed when first connected

I've been told by optus that when first connected to nbn the speed is very slow and it takes 1 to 2 weeks to 'gear up' to the speed you are paying for eg 50/20. Is this correct?

I've never heard of this before from others who have connected

No, they are just making excuses.

Re: Speed when first connected

Is it FTTN?
If so then you have joined the node lottery.
You could either be very close = good speed or far away = bad speed.
NBN WONT fix it unless its lower then 12/1Mbit during "co-existence" (e.g. Telstra lines still operating for 18 months after nbn goes live) and post that wont do a thing if it connects at 25/5Mbit.

Only the stats on your router will give the actual reason.

Re: Speed when first connected

No, once connected its just a few hours to change to any particular speed required (up or down). If you are on FTTN then your max actual possible speed might be anywhere between 25Mbps and 100Mbps. Tell them to get on with it.

Re: Speed when first connected

But with the ACCC mandated line testing your normally provisioned on one of the slowest tiers for fttn, fttb and fttc (perhaps hfc too).
Once the line is "tested" then they will move you to the higher plan if the line supports it.

Re: Speed when first connected

The 'box' is about 4 houses away from me but I am paying for 50/20 which I was told will give 40mbps most times. The nbn is actually faster than adsl I had which had a max d/l of 6.0mbps and often down to .46mbps. Optus told me that was due to the nbn doing work somewhere around here but I think they say a lot of things just to get you off the phone.

Re: Speed when first connected

Yes thanks had a couple of replies. I'm still not impressed with the optus response of course ie the nbn takes a while to adjust to the cables (1-2 weeks) I think they might be a bit more inventive than that.

Thanks for your reply.
