Ongoing Issue with High Latency


Can someone from Optus please assist with the following issue. Since I've moved to the NBN on Optus, I've received high latency during peak hour usage - especially when connecting to servers based in Melbourne. In the early morning my ping is a stable 20ms, however during the afternoon and evening my baseline ping is around 80ms (with minor packet loss). I've provided some evidence of my issues below.

As you can see from the capture below, the two hosts in Melbourne ( and have substantial latency issues during peak hours, whereas hosts in Sydney and New Zealand have only small amounts of jitter during the evening hours. As you can see I've only captured 5 days worth of data, but it demonstrates this issue is constant and ongoing on a regular basis.

Comparison of traceroute to at two different times during the same day, at approximately 9AM and 9PM respectively. The 9AM capture shows a steady ping of around 20-25ms with no packet loss, the capture at 9PM average ping of 90ms with a small percentage of packet loss.

Asked my friend (who lives in the sames suburb with a different ISP) to do a traceroute to the same host, to ensure the host was not the cause of the issue. As you can see from the results below, he managed a 19ms ping, whereas my connection resulted in a 73ms ping.

The issue (network congestion) never got resolved with Optus. I got released from my contract and moved to another ISP.
