Is this acceptable NBN HFC 100/40 evening speeds and latency ?

Is this acceptable NBN HFC 100/40 evening speeds and latency ?

Sorry I know the answer, just venting :). (didnt a get a response from Optus web chat)

Below results were taken at ~10:50pm. Daytime/offpeak speeds are +100/~35Mbps and latency below 10ms..

Not by a long shot.

HFC is the worst when it comes consistency because of local congestion, and the ping gives that away more then the download speed does.

My FTTC speedtest pings at the moment from Mel-Syd is 18ms, and from mel-mel is 5ms.

That would suggest there's an issue with your line (i.e. not a congestion problem but an actual fault.). Optus are required to hit around 80Mps in peak hours (if not then you can just leave without penalty). Is it a one off or common? If the later then request the NBN get involved to check your line and if it keeps happening then switch to another RSP. Plenty of good ones out there.

That would have been my first thought if he didn't state "Daytime/offpeak speeds are +100/~35Mbps and latency below 10ms.."

Yep probably congestion. I am assuming its the NBN uptake in my area. NBN has been great for 11 months, but just gone to sheet in the past couple of weeks.  I'll log a fault ticket and see if they can do anything about it.

More bummed out with the latency due to my 1st world problem of not being able play COD online.

Here is some more test for your amusements.

" I'll log a fault ticket and see if they can do anything about it. "

I'm not sure you're realising that Optus have a legal obligation to provide 80Mbps+ throughout the day. If congestion is an issue its only because Optus have purchased insufficient bandwidth from the NBN (saves them money). They can buy more anytime they need to. If the issue continues then you are able to request a refund and exit any contract without penalty.

More likely NBN congestion instead of Optus is my guess. HFC has bottlenecks that other tech does not, and all RSP's need to go through the same bottleneck.

"More likely NBN congestion instead of Optus is my guess"
Not relevant to the OP though. Optus need (are required) to sort the problem.
I'm on HFC myself and peak hour figures like that show a real issue somewhere. @fuzzdude perhaps ask a neighbour or two who they use as an RSP and if they get big speed issues at 8pm in the evening too. That could confirm an NBN or RSP problem.

I was countering your point that if its congestion it can only be Optus.

Optus need (are required) to sort the problem.

No disputing that at all.

Thanks all.

I've logged a ticket and they did a line test and escalated up etc. Will update once the ticket progresses.

Here is what I typically see prior to these issues.
