Can I replace the SAGEM modem supplied with my NBN "upgrade" with the Netgear CG3000 cable modem/router it replaced?
The wifi signal from the SAGEM modem is hopeless compared to the Netgear unit

Hi there, your cable modem won't be compatible with the NBN connection, have you tried changing the WiFi channel on the modem? Please chat with our Tech Support team for a hand

You can request a replacement if you'd like as it may perform better.
You could just set your old modem to only do the wifi and point it back to the new modem (connect via cat5)
Or try just swapping the modems over. Use the WAN port. You can basically plug in any modem with a WAN port in the back but you will lose telephone capability if you don't use the new Optus modem.

if you already have then give it a try, there is nothing to lose, maybe your optus VOIP phone.
