I'm considering switching my mobile plan to Optus from Telstra, and also contracting a new phone. If I sign up online, does my number become inactive with Telstra immediately? As it will take 1-5 business days for the new phone to be shipped to me, I'm worried I'll be without a functioning mobile phone during this time. Or will my number be ported over once I receive the new phone?

Your mobile number won't come across until we've received a notification that your sim or handset has been delivered.
Only at that point will the porting process begin.
