Paying bill via bpay

Harumi23
Hi everyone. How come come there's 1% fee when paying bill via Bpay? In my previous provider there's none so i was wondering if there's a way to pay my bill without paying this additional fee. Thanks in advance.

The payment processing fee is based on merchant service fees charged by financial insititutions to Optus, plus the admin cost incurred to provide the credit card payment option to customers.  If you make your payment via Bpay with a bank account there is no processing fee.

Okay cool thanks Andy for the reply. Its just confusing cos on your website under the BY B-PAY it does says that there's 1% fee.. By B-Pay: Savings or Credit Card B-Pay lets you pay your bill from your own bank account or credit card, provided your bank is a participating member of the B-Pay scheme. You may need to contact your bank to confirm and enable B-Pay. B-Pay is available to all Optus customers, with the exception of Dial-Up Internet accounts. You'll need the biller code and customer reference number - these are found on your payment slip. The payment slip is, the lower half of Page 1 of your Optus Bill. Bill payments made with a credit, debit or charge card will incur a payment processing fee of 1% (incl GST) of the total payment. Thanks for clarifying that.

i think it is disgusting for Optus charge any fee for paying a bill, by any means.

Their running costs are built into the monthly charges we pay, there is no justification for the company to chatge us extra to pay our bill!

its an absolute rip off and disgusting business process.

if you agree, register your complaints with the telecommunicatiions ombudsman:

So following this thread and noting the reply to the original post on 18 May 2012 that stated " If you make your payment via Bpay with a bank account there is no processing fee", why is there an account fee being charged for using BPAY, noting that there is no specific mention of a charge for using BPAY on the bill, optus contract or via searching the Optus site? The only comment on the website is the catch all "If you choose not to pay your account by direct debit a $2.20 processing fee is charged to your monthly bill(s)."

What is the effective difference between using BPAY or setting up a Direct Debit, or is this simply an attempt by Optus to force customers down a direct debit path. Optus is the only company that I know of that has such a practice in place. What is the actual cost to Optus of me doing the work and using BPAY as opposed to probably the same work and procesess involved in a Direct Debit?

Again, I feel that it is a disgusting  business practice to charge customers anything extra for paying their bill by the method that suits them best.

there is no justification for charging anything in addition to your invoice amount, regardless of the comments posted by moderators. Perhaps Optus should pay less moderators and stop charging people extra fees to pay their bills!

dont forget you can always raise complaints with the ombudsman. Telco companies and banks choose not to listen to their customers until a third party tells them too.

telco ombudsman is

its a free service, if you are not happy- let the ombudsman know

October 2013

- Amanda Hutton, Head of Customer Experience, Optus said, “This change is the direct result of feedback from our customers who told us that they didn’t like these charges. Doing away with unfair fees is the next step in making things better for our customers.

The removal of the 1% credit card surcharge for direct debit expands the fee free payment options for Optus customers, which now includes BPAY savings, cheque, Optus retail store payments and direct debit from credit cards or bank accounts.

So what changed for OPTUS to now impose a fee on BPAY, aside from a desire to force people to use Direct Debit?

Does this mean Optus charges no additional fees to pay your, regardless of payments method?

(now is the right time for optus moderator to chime in on this discussion)

Hi All,

The 1% fee on credit card payments is only waived when it comes to direct debit. In terms of a BPAY payment, there will be no charge to use this method if it's from a savings account.
