Lease plans

I received a text saying you guys are no longer doing lease plans. It also stated in the text that I have to return the phone and buy it outright from Optus. My 2 year lease has just expired and in that lease contract I’ve been paying for the handset each bill so why do I have to pay for it again now that my lease has run out?

Re: Lease plans

This doesn’t answer my question as stated previous, why do I have to pay for my phone again since I’ve been paying it off on my 2 year lease????

But you haven't. When you lease a phone you are just renting the phone, you are not purchasing the phone at all.

Re: Lease plans

So why then with all my other leases I’ve had through Optus I get to keep the phone after the 2 year lease?

Re: Lease plans

Are you sure those other ones were actually leases and not purchases? Most people do not enter into lease contracts for phones.

Re: Lease plans

From memory lease plans were only offered from May 2017 until July 2019, all plans before then were not leases.

Re: Lease plans

Ok so can you tell me the pay out figure for this lease on the phone? Or do I wait to hear from Optus about the price? <removed> is my number. Or when do I make an offer to purchase it?

Re: Lease plans

You need to contact Optus DIRECTLY for this information.

Re: Lease plans

The reason Optus has stopped doing leases is because they have had the effect of misleading a lot of customers just as you feel. They were often sold as 'cheaper' plans because customers got an extra discount of $10 a month. The reality is that for that $240 'discount' you must hand the $1000+ phone back to Optus in very good condition (no major dents or scratches etc.)

So unfortunately you don't own the phone even though you have been paying almost the same amount of money as people on 'Pay for your phone' plans. At this stage your options are as you have described - hand it back in or request a payout figure (which should be reasonable for the second hand market)
