Is this number actually Optus, or a scam?

Hi all,

I have been receiving multiple missed calls from a number in Melbourne ( 03 8571 4092 ). I called the number back once, and somebody answered the call 'Hello, this is *name* from Optus' and they didn't seem to know why I was calling. I hung up on them as it felt suspicious, and they have tried to call several times since, but I haven't answered. Is this number actually connected to Optus at all?

Thanks for any insight!

Re: Is this number actually Optus, or a scam?

Optus has many standard ways to get in touch with you if they want. Basically any friend, family or company that you deal with has other lines of communication.

If you don't recognise the number (or its hidden) then these days its best to leave it unanswered. The phone system has been well and truly 'hacked' by scammers, politicians, advertisers, surveys and of course sellers.

If its important, it will appear on your next bill. Otherwise don't pick up or return the call.

It sounds like you're not expecting a call from Optus, rula?

It could be something as simple as another customer gave their contact number incorrectly or it was recorded incorrectly, etc.

As Peter suggests you can leave it unanswered or next time pick up and if you're still unsure, perhaps ask the Optus representative to send you a text message from Optus or something to verify that it is Optus.
