Can anyone advise me why after the end date of my contract is up I am still paying the same amount. If that included handset repayments surely I shouldn’t have paid that off by now therefore my monthly bill should be less?

Generally. However if you look at the various plans a lot of them are skewed to make the handset appear free. You'll be put on a $80 plan + $0 (handset) etc. Optus then subsidise the handset while you are on the plan. This way if you decide to leave while on plan you're up for the remaining cost of the handset (unsubsidsed).
And of course when you're payment is up you revert to a month to month $80 plan (but no longer have to pay the $0 for the handset )
You need to look at the various SIM only offers now available and have Optus move you on to one. Generally $40 will get you 15Gb or so.
