Super high ping. Unplayable lag.

Signed up with optus on the 2 year unlimited cable broadband $90 p/m

I get unplayable ping from 7pm - 11pm (I work 7am - 7pm so this is the only time i can use it)

This is the Tracert I get from one of my game servers during this time.

All servers are australian yet I get 100 - 800 ping in game from these times and it's impossible to play.

If not resolved I'm going to contact the ACCC and get off this plan ASAP.

Heya Ubuntu, looks like there might be a prob with the IP address you're trying to trace route too. I did a search on it and looks like it's an IP address based in the US. When you're experiencing these slow ping times what are your internet speeds like? If you're able to run a speed test here. And a trace route to optus.com.au and post back the results we can have a look into this a bit further for you.

We have been having similar problems for months, and it is getting worse. Cable connection, latest Netgear v2 modem: Ping to www.opus.com.au gives the following: --- e6356.a.akamaiedge.net ping statistics --- 1500 packets transmitted, 1500 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 21.204/552.146/1235.338/295.216 ms -- ie, 500 ms average, with a max well over 1000 ms. Tests using Pingtest.net give ping of 927 ms, and Jitter of 71 ms (and gives a grade of F for network performance - very poor). Sounds like this is a widespread problem. I would like to see a solution !

Having the same problem. Ever since getting the unlimited plan, it seems thing have gotten worse and worse and this last week has been particularly unbearable. Not sure what the problem is, but Optus really needs to fix this because they are selling an "unlimited" plan that isn't unlimited at all and lags horribly all the time.

I'm having the same issue.

 

I bought Counter Strike: Go on Steam back in Febuary, and was able to play just fine. There was absolutely no issue what so ever, usually getting under 20ms ping (even during peak times!). My friend who I played with is also with Optus, only a kilometre away, and got around the same ping and connection quality.

 

The problem started occurring during mid-April / May. I was suddenly unable to connect to any game, and I noticed that the Steam store in general took very long to load. This was fine for the past 6 years, as was my connection to Valve/Steam servers. Then one day overnight, I suddenly could not join any game, due to extremely high packet loss (35% according to running

net_graph 1

in game). I did not change any settings anywhere, either on my router or PC. That means the problem has to boil down to Optus.

 

I'm connecting to Australian Steam servers for downloads, which still reach 2.5MB/s no problem. The CSGO servers are also Australian ones. I'm in 2217 NSW if that makes a difference.

 

For what it's worth, pinging yesopt.us results in a 100% packet loss.

 

I registered because I am sick of this problem. I encourage other people to also speak up so Optus can be aware of this issue.

What troubleshooting have you guys gone through in order to try and rectify this problem?

Thanks for the info. Are you seeing the high ping times at all times of the day/ night? When you're seeing these pings what are your speeds like? I'd suggest contacting tech support on 131344 so they can run some testing and see if there's anything Network related going on there. If no Network problems I'd suggest running trace routes to the servers you're trying to play from at a few different times of the day/night to see if you are constantly getting the same lag.

Its just at night between 7:30 - 11pm
constantly for the last month.

I contacted 131344, which claimed that 7 other customers in the entire area are having the exact same problem as me, they just haven't reported it.

 

They claimed that a technician would be sent to the area (not to my home) to check cabling and such.

 

I asked when would this be resolved, and they said they did not know.

 

So in other words, nothing will happen, and I will have to call back in a month and go through the exact same process. No reference numbers to check. No progress reports.

 

It doesn't matter if it's 8AM, 12PM, 8PM, or 12AM - I get the exact same packet loss problem.
