I have a pre paid mobile modem to access wifi when I travel. I used to be able to check usage previously but now cannot and can only recharge without knowing the balance still available. How can I check the usage.

Most of those prepaid modems have an internal sms feature built into the administration area and if you send an sms to 9999 with the word "balance" you should get just that. I also believe you can get this info via the Optus account portal but I haven't done that myself with a prepaid device.
