Parental control DNS gateways

I wanted to get parental control over all the devices in our house (I have 5 kids) but changing the DNS gateways on our Optus provided Netgear CG3000 router to OpenDNS who have content filtering. The Optus provided router does not allow me to do this. I have spoken to netgear and they tell me this is an Optus requirement. Is there a way around this?

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

G'day Durston,

I only have four children, but their High School has mandated that each has a tablet, and I also need Parental Control on the modem to ensure that internet availability can be restricted after a certain time, and so that specific sites can be blocked.

I am grateful to Optus for the Netgear N300 DGN 2200 wireless modem router they supplied which generally works well, but like you, am frustrated that the Parental Control which is available on this model, has been disabled in the Optus firmware. I rang asking for this about three months ago, and again today without success (though the person I spoke to is sending an email to his supervisor).

Optus, can you please help us?

Regards,

Darren

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

Hey Durston201 and leklfam, Optus do configure the modems differently to the manufacturer to optimise the equipment for the network and this can sometimes involve the addition or removal of specific features. There may be programs that you can purchase that can provide the parental controls that you’re after, we also have Optus Internet Security available too that may help.

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

Hey matt, What about personalised tablets and mobile devices that link into the router.

every router i have had with other isp's have had the options to block websites and dns routing through custom dns servers to prevent certain websites being accessed.

Durston201 and leklfam. Even though Optus should provide you with a solution i would suggest buying a retail router to either replace the one you have or atleast bridge into the one you are using at the moment.

I have the CG3000 -v2 which is horrible. I have had to bridge the device as optus screwed with the router.

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

I would also like a better response on this.

OpenDNS cannot be set up in the CG3000v2 since you cannot define your own DNS server.

Optus's own "Optus Internet Security" plans has to be installed on the end device and won't block content on a Mac, phone or tablets.

Its for this reason that disabling of the Netgear.opendns router level parental controls is one of the most irritating and misguided actions I've ever seen from Optus.

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

I have been hammering away at this for two years.

Most of my requests for information have been ignored.  I've done the supervisor thing a few times (as if this isn't a well known issue and regularly asked)!  I have been sent off  to the modem manufacturer and Optus premium customer support and I have been told to retain an IT specialist and or install a router.  I've done it all.

To cut a long story short, I persisted until finally the answers came back (oh look what we've found) ...  The firmware which the modem manufacturers intstall on the modems to help us protect our children is stripped out by Optus.  Wait it gets better.... then Optus trys to sell it back to us for more than the cost of the modem on an ongoing monthly subscription.

To say this is unethical and unconscionable would be an understatement.  As if it is not already hard enough to maintain some safety and control for our children without a telco like Optus trying to exploit our desperate need.

I am still astounded and appauled and still chasing the matter - but currently Optus has reverted to the time tested approach of ignoring my emails.

It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that this could be described as a form of indirect child exploitation.

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

Modem: Parental Control Scandal - Shameful, Unconscionable, Unethical

All over the Optus community people are reaching out, desperate to take back some control of what's going into their homes and what's reaching their children.

I imagine every day there are dozens of calls to Optus about this issue and each is treated as if this is the first time the matter has been raised.

Let's lift the lid on this disgraceful situation . . .

For two years I have been pursuing this matter.  Like anyone else who calls Optus about this I've had numerous transfers to dumb stuck supervisors.  Then it has been suggested that I pay for Optus Premium support or put in a router or get an IT specialist to work on it.  I wasn't going to be railroaded - I've done it all - without results of course.

To cut a long story short, finally the answer has came back and it sends a shudder through my spine.

The part of the firmware which the modem manufacturers intstal on their modems to protect the vulnerable (like our children) is stripped out by Optus.

As if that isnt bad enough...

Then Optus tries to sell it back to us for more than the cost of the modem on an ongoing monthly subscription and rubs salt into the wounds by collecting kudos on its "responsible program".

As if it is not already hard enough to maintain some safety and control for our children without atelco like Optus trying to exploit a desperate need.

It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that this is indirectly a form of child exploitationENOUGH is ENOUGH - this needs to stop as does the pretence of not being aware of the problem.

Re: Parental control DNS gateways

Hi Astounded.

I'm with you. Upgraded our modem a few months ago and lost all gateway controls. Pathetic Optus. Nearly had me changing internet providers.

Can I recommend you plug your modem into a timer - we got a programable HTM one from the hardware and it will kill wireless from 10pm and a bit later on Friday and Saturday nights. Primitive but effective. No software to worry about.
