Outgoing server timing out.

I'm at my wits end.  One minute I can send emails and the next I can't.  I've checked Incoming mail details, Outgoing mail details, port numbers,checked server settings a hundred times, about:config & extended the time, googling server timing out, .  I have seen it's been a problem, but for the life of me, I cannot fix it.  I use Mozilla Thunderbird and optusnet.  Does anyone know how to fix it?

Are you connected with Optus when sending mail and have you tried authentication on your outgoing server? I assume it's an Optus email address and not your own domain?

Yes I'm connected with Optus.  Authentication server just says normal password.  Should I adjust that to authenticate?
