I cancelled my Optus Sport subscription sometime in July (not sure the exact date, close to the 14th), but I see there is an charge for it on my July bill despite it being free until August. I'm not totally sure what pro-rata means, but will my August bill be lower as a result of me not being subscribed but still being charged??

Thanks for reaching out to us about this.
Depending on the date you cancelled the charge may not have been updated on your bill.
If you cancelled before the 1st of August the unused service charges would be credited back on the next bill.
Pro-rata means part of your billing month eg: your billing month is 15th July to 14th August, you would have only been charged for the service from the 1st of August until the 14th of August.
