I will be getting my placed hooked up for cable broadband, but was wondering if the consumer can do the self-install with the modem and just use his/her existing coaxial wallpoint.
I'm very knowledgable with computers and their peropherals.

Yes, I would assume so! I setup my modem with a provided coax cable, but I had a technician place the ports and phone line adapaters in the wall for me. You also need a technician to forward a line to your house. Once that line is connected to your house, you should have no issues in setting up your modem and supplying your own Coax cable.
