Australian DNS

What is wrong with OPTUS DNS in Australia. This is the 4th time within a month that I need to VPN overseas to surf the Web

Re: Australian DNS

You could also try setting the DNS to 8.8.8.8 in your network settings (Google DNS)

Re: Australian DNS

yer ... tried that (changing to 8.8.8.8) -- not much joy - traceroute from linux box - appears to get hung up on 49.198.0.1, which is:

"49.198.0.0 - 49.198.0.255 is an IP address range owned by SingTel Optus Pty Ltd and located in Australia"

traceroute to www.google.com (172.217.25.132), 64 hops max
1 192.168.1.1 0.501ms 0.435ms 0.388ms

Re: Australian DNS

Not using Optus DNS. But there is an issue with Optus as a can suf via VPN

the problem has disappeared

I await its return

that is if I haven’t switched providers when NBN roles out

Re: Australian DNS

Given your trace went all the way, this would mean that it's not Optus having trouble but the overseas provider or cloud provider.

Try using 1.1.1.1 for DNS and see how you go.

Re: Australian DNS

Traceroute also blows up on local sites - any local site. I guess there might be a chance that everyone else has a dodgy configuration... or it cooooould be me!

My OPTUS cable modem used to be bullet-proof - NBN requires resetting something on average every 2 days. I'd have prefered the stable slower speed.
