Early in my career I remember venturing out to a lighthouse in the middle of the sea. I was making the journey to fix their 2Mbps link to the mainland. I look back now and think about how far we’ve come and how much renewal and growth technology has had in recent history.

One thing I’ve seen is the emerging age of big, fast mobile data. The speed and volume of the data we consume has increased significantly over recent time. We’re consuming more data than ever before and the trends we’re seeing show that there are multiple factors contributing to this explosion of data consumption.

Firstly, content is a huge factor. Take the news for example. We used to read the newspaper or watch the news on TV. The internet then made it possible to read or watch the news online. Now we receive the news as a multisensory experience through customised, interactive services streaming direct to our connected devices. In this example you can see the shift from basic data needs to something far more sophisticated.

And we have the devices to match. The rise in data consumption correlates with the capability of the handsets we’re using. Just because a content provider is offering premium content like 4K video or HD sound, doesn’t necessarily mean that your device will deliver that same quality to you. Specifications such as screen size and resolution can limit or enhance your data usage. For example, the better the screen resolution the more data you consume.

Data consumption increases are also linked to our behaviour. Lifestyles have changed over time increasing demand for bigger, faster data. A grainy picture or buffering progress bar isn’t acceptable anymore. We’ve come to expect high definition videos in 4K or 360⁰ and Hi-Fi lossless music streaming. And not only are we consuming more data but we want to know more about our data. We want to know where our data is being used and whether we’re making the most of it.

At Optus, we want to help you make the most of your data and keep on top of the latest trends. That’s why we provide a service that can handle big data and get it to you fast. Our mobile network is world-class and our mandate is to stay ahead of trends like increasing data consumption.

When it comes to infrastructure, our mobile network capacity has come a long way—especially from that lighthouse with 2Mbps!

So what does all this mean? Despite the growing data consumption trend, it’s really about personal choice. When it comes to adopting new technology, it’s up to each of us to decide what our priorities are. Your choices will directly affect how much data you consume, how your usage is allocated and what options you have when it comes to data. Do what you can to take control of your data and keep track of how you’re using it. Check your device’s usage settings to see where your data’s being used. Get the My Optus App so you can keep track of your data usage on the go. The more you know about your data story, the easier it’ll be to ensure you’re getting value for money.

We really want to help to ensure that you are educated and make the most of your service. If you have a question about data consumption or making the most of your data, I’d love to hear it. What do you want to know?

I am up with the latest trends however the small amounts of data included with mobile phones plans these days makes smart phones dumb. If you consider a mobile phone can be used for much the same activities as a computer I do wonder what you can do with 4 or 5 GB of data. Half a HD Netflix video perhaps?
