Whether it’s blasting Britney like our very own @Ray_YC, or constantly keeping your phone on silent and relying on vibrate to answer calls, as @Megan_YC has been prone to do, each Yes Crowder has their own ringtone preference! But these days, a few overused and all-too-familiar ringtones seem to be making the rounds in every office, public space, and form of transport - with one ringing phone resulting in everyone in the vicinity frantically reaching into their pockets to check if it's their phone that’s ringing, or the person’s next to them.
There was limited ringtone choice when the first ringtone was created, with no other option than a monotonous ringing sound on the first telephone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The coming decades showed slightly more promise, with the Cradle Phone producing an improvement in the 1890's. The following century provided varying degrees of the same bland ringtones at alternate octaves, until the 1990's when Nokia released the Nokia 1610 - giving us a catchy tone that's still recognised today (even by a few millennials, believe it or not!).
Go on, give it a listen!
The 1990's marked a rise in increasingly exciting ringtones and the 2000's gave us further variety, with many paying for a snippet of their favourite pop song in a ringtone format (in case listening to it on the ol' Discman didn't provide enough satisfaction).
We'd love to hear what your ringtone is whilst your ignoring Mum's calls for when you're next coming home to visit, or the kids calling to ask you to pick them up (...again). Comment below and let us know your current ringtone
