Whether it’s blasting Britney like our very own @Ray_YC, or constantly keeping your phone on silent and relying on vibrate to answer calls, as @Megan_YC has been prone to do, each Yes Crowder has their own ringtone preference! But these days, a few overused and all-too-familiar ringtones seem to be making the rounds in every office, public space, and form of transport - with one ringing phone resulting in everyone in the vicinity frantically reaching into their pockets to check if it's their phone that’s ringing, or the person’s next to them.

There was limited ringtone choice when the first ringtone was created, with no other option than a monotonous ringing sound on the first telephone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. The coming decades showed slightly more promise, with the Cradle Phone producing an improvement in the 1890's. The following century provided varying degrees of the same bland ringtones at alternate octaves, until the 1990's when Nokia released the Nokia 1610 - giving us a catchy tone that's still recognised today (even by a few millennials, believe it or not!).

Go on, give it a listen!

The 1990's marked a rise in increasingly exciting ringtones and the 2000's gave us further variety, with many paying for a snippet of their favourite pop song in a ringtone format (in case listening to it on the ol' Discman didn't provide enough satisfaction).

We'd love to hear what your ringtone is whilst your ignoring Mum's calls for when you're next coming home to visit, or the kids calling to ask you to pick them up (...again). Comment below and let us know your current ringtone Smiley Happy

At the moment I've got something super generic as I haven't bothered to optimise the ringtone on my new phone yet, but on my iPhone I openly displayed my fandom of a podcast called My Favourite Murder by having a Siamese cat meowing because he wanted a cookie as my ringtone. If you want to hear it without opening iTunes, Elvis the cat meowing for a cookie is also on YouTube

I also remember composing my own ringtones on one of my Nokias, which was so time consuming and sounded so bad. Then on later phones I had a different ringtone assigned to different contacts.

What about @MiCCAS

I haven't heard my phone ring in a while.

I've misplaced my iDevice more times than I can count.

A phone on silent is difficult to find (especially when it's lodged between the couch cushions).

Hi

A bit late but I have an old fashioned ring as it seem to be the only one that I recognise as my phone.

My problem is I always set my phone to Do Not Disturb when I go to bed, can't forget, because my wife wouldn't talk to me for a week if the phone woke her up.

It's in the morning the problem arises and it sometimes gets to lunchtime before I realise how quite the phone's been. I now set a daily alarm for 9am to remind me to turn the Do Not Disturb off.

Must be my age.

Hey @Davelew, remind me what kind of phone you have? I have no idea if the Samsung s9 I have does this (I really should check) but you can schedule a timeframe for Do Not Disturb on the iPhone.

As I recall, you go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and turn on Scheduled, then set a time. I had mine set up so that calls from my family would still go through regardless of the hour and if someone called twice within three minutes, the second call came through.

Of course, you may enjoy the extra Do Not Disturb time?

Just to confuse things I have a OnePlus3T @Felicity_YC. Has a slider for do not disturb so easy to set. Used an app for a while that I could schedule times but found I was always amending it and found it easier the way I am doing it at the moment. Plus to add to my problems until recently because of a seriously ill relative often needed to keep the do not disturb off as essential phone calls could come from anywhere not just the calls which I set to allow to come through.

Well that's nearly my life story but I do need to have another think about a better way of doing it.

Perhaps you could start a blog of how people manage their phones overnight.

I think, the trick to a good ring tone is something your not going to feel uncomfortable with in a room full of strangers, but obscure enough to know its yours.

I used to work for BHP and quiet often found myself in meetings with large groups and the last thing you need is a "Bond theme", "X Files" or the "chicken dance"  interrupting  the proceedings and actually being judged by it .

@Pony64

I would have thought when you worked for BHP your would have Coal Mine by Miner as your ringtone.
