We’re proud to announce that one of our very own has been honoured in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
Optus employee, Nelune Rajapakse (AM), was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia “for significant service to the community through fundraising and support programs for cancer patients”. This includes the work Nelune has done with her charity, The NELUNE Foundation. Nelune’s achievement adds to her Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). Congrats Nelune!
We asked Nelune how it felt being honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia. Here’s what she said:
“It is an incredibly humbling experience. This acknowledgment will help me to continue working towards better outcomes for cancer patients in our community.”
What is the NELUNE Foundation?
The NELUNE Foundation is a not-for-profit charity founded in 2001 by Nelune Rajapakse and Anna Guillan. The Foundation provides psychological and practical support, assistance and care for public hospital and underprivileged cancer patients of all ages.
100% of all donations are distributed directly to cancer patient care including providing emotional support, care and post-operative medical aids that are not covered by Government or private funding.
How does Optus support the NELUNE Foundation?
“Optus is the backbone of the NELUNE Foundation. It supports the Foundation in various ways including the sponsorship of two Patient Transport Vehicles to enable patients get to treatment and back on a complimentary basis. As well as this, staff make a huge contribution by attending all our fundraising events.” said Nelune.
To date, the NELUNE Foundation has raised over $28 million, which includes donations by Optus and its employees. The money has helped provide practical and tangible help for cancer patients receiving treatment in the NSW public hospital service.
How can you get involved with the NELUNE Foundation?
Here at Optus we’re extremely proud of Nelune and the amazing work she is doing in our community.
