What does the video quality look like on my device?

Video will be streamed in standard definition up to 1.5Mbps. This speed is for a single stream on mobile and tablet devices, so you enjoy your favourite movies and TV shows when you’re out and about. You might get some pixilation for the first 30 seconds or so of your stream as your app calibrates to the network. To get the best experience, we recommend you use the Mobile TV streaming services mobile and tablet apps and set the quality to “Auto”.

How does this work when I’m on WiFi?

If you stream through WiFi we won’t optimise your video. The quality will vary depending on the app settings and your WiFi internet service provider. This may use data from your home internet plan.

Which apps are data free Mobile TV streaming available on?

Data free Mobile TV streaming is available through the Mobile TV streaming services' apps. It’s important to note that some streaming services may not have apps available on all device operating systems.

Can I stream Mobile TV content data free through a web browser like Google Chrome?

For the best viewing experience we recommend you use the Mobile TV streaming services mobile and tablet apps and set the video quality to “Auto”. If you use a web browser to stream TV shows and movies from the Mobile TV streaming services, this will still be data free.

Can I stream Mobile TV data free when I’m overseas?

No, data free Mobile TV streaming is only for use in Australia. You’ll be charged roaming rates for data used if you stream from our Mobile TVstreaming services while you’re overseas.

Can I stream Mobile TV data free on any device?

You’ll experience Mobile TV streaming the best on an Optus-supplied 4G compatible device. If you wish to stream Mobile TV data free on a non-Optus supplied device or an Optus-supplied device that is not 4G compatible, you may not have the best viewing experience. Check your device to see if it is Optus 4G compatible. You can find out more about Optus 4G mobile network device compatibility here.

Will data free Mobile TV streaming work on all my devices if I Data Pool?

No, data free Mobile TV streaming will only work on the service for which it has been activated.

Why have I used data from my plan when all I’ve done is stream content on the Mobile TV streaming services?

There are some functions and content within the apps that are excluded from the offer and will use data from your plan. These include:

  • Video downloads
  • Advertisements that the streaming service provider may insert into the app, these can be video ads or banner ads
  • Any analytics sent from the streaming services to understand your video preferences and usage
  • Authentication, for example, when the service confirms your login

Also, streaming on TVs (such as Chromecast and Apple TV) is excluded and will use data on your plan.

What if I want to watch content in high definition?

If you want to stream TV shows and movies from the Mobile TV streaming services in High Definition you can remove data free Mobile TV streaming in My Account by clicking the Entertainment section. It’s important to note that by removing this, any TV shows and movies you stream from the Mobile TV streaming services will no longer be data free and will use data from your plan.

I no longer want to have access to data free Mobile TV streaming, can I remove this from my plan?

Yes, you can remove data free Mobile TV streaming from your service. You can do this using My Account or by contacting us.

When will the removal of data free Mobile TV streaming take effect?

This depends on your situation:

  • I have stayed on the same mobile plan and only removed data free Mobile TV streaming.

Removal of data free Mobile TV streaming will take effect from the start of your next bill cycle. From the start of your next bill cycle onwards, any streaming you do through the Mobile TV streaming services will incur normal data charges.

  • I have changed my mobile plan and also removed data free Mobile TV streaming.

Removal of data free Mobile TV streaming will take effect from the start of the bill cycle of your new plan. From the start of your new plan’s first bill cycle onwards, any streaming you do through the Mobile TV streaming services will incur normal data charges.

Can I tether or share my data free Mobile TV streaming?

Data free Mobile TV streaming is not suitable for tethering, hot-spotting to multiple devices or streaming to a bigger screen using services such as Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. If you do tether or stream to a bigger screen, it will use your included data.

What if I am using a VPN?

Streaming while connected to a VPN (Virtual Private Network) won’t be data free. This is because we won’t be able to detect your streaming traffic.

Will you be adding more streaming services in the future

We’ll continue to review the participating streaming services and may add more in the future. The participating streaming services are subject to change at any time.

Will my streaming be slowed after reaching a certain data limit?

I've got my mobile broadband actiated for free streaming.  If my Samsung Smart TV is linked to my modem, will streaming be free on the TV, or do I need to use my laptop?

Does the data free streaming include the Gear VR official Netflix app? Customer support says they're not sure, Netflix themselves say it should be the same data so it doesn't matter and no forum seems to know the answer so I thought I'd try my luck here....

Hey Goffee the streaming is set up for direct access from the App on a mobile or tablet any tethering to other devices is not supported by us.

Hi  Tarbardiosa we only support using the Mobile Apps for phone and Tablet available via Netflix or Presto. What App have you been using on the Gear VR?

Tarbardiosa
by Frequent Visitor Tarbardiosa
‎2016-09-14 11:20 AM

Hi Meg, the app I have been using is the Gear VR version of the official Netflix app on my Galaxy S7. It is functionally identical to the regular version except it is displayed in a virtual lounge room within the Gear VR headset....

Meg
by Moderator Meg
‎2016-09-14 11:52 AM

I couldn't guarantee that  it would be included in the offer Tarbardiosa. Basically because the mobile is pairing with the Gear VR it would be seen as tethering  or hot spotting the data from the mobile. The Netflix data offer doesn't include any tethering or hot spot options. Meg

Hey Micsam, I have tested it myself and the Gear VR Netflix does seem to be data free. The optus data inight section groups the Gear VR and regular Netflix in the same group, and it doesn't seem to be counting towards my usage. The HDMI cable I haven't been able to test yet but I plan to in the near future and can post on here with results unless you find out earlier

In this screenshot the usage on Tue 13th was the regular app, Wed 14th was the Gear VR. So my understanding is that from the server side, the two apps look the same to Optus

@tristancayzer, can confirm that you can definitely hotspot however data won't be un-metered.

@Tikka1984, you definitely can. You'd need to swap the SIM card between the devices though or if you place your iPad on a plan you can add on the entertainment pack.

 Hi,

I have a Optus mobile broadband plan with the entertainment pack. Here is my modem:

http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/n-ou1isn/hnx4mcea/product_images/uploaded_images/optus-huawei-e5786.jpg?...

I have been streaming to my xbox one data free for about 2 weeks. My Account showed 25gb of unmetered usage. Then 3 days ago the unmetered usage stopped increasing and started using my 10gb data. Why is this allowed to happen?

Sorry to say Dillb but it's something that Optus have decided to make available to Post-Paid customers as a benefit of being on a Post-Paid plan with us. If you were on Pre-Paid, you'd still have the benefits of unmetered streaming music from selected services.

I have a Optus mobile wifi with a second sim that is attached to my mobile account. I have the free data movie streaming package on this account. Can I use my mobile wifi to view movies on my tablet without using data?

Do I need to go through the fetch tv Optus app to watch movies? If so I can get my activation code. If not I assume I just go through Netflix which I'm already subscribed too.

Thanks

Hey @Mandyg - if you wanted to take advantage of data free streaming you'd have to watch from the Netflix app on the device the SIM card is in. Also, to access the 30 free movies on the Fetch, you would have to get your activation code from your MyAccount.

‎2016-11-03 10:43 AM

No, that wound't work. In short, if you have an tablet plan $35 and above, you can add $10 bolt on to watch data free Netflix on that tablet. If you have a mobile service with Optus and have paid the extra $10 a month, or have it included for free on your plan, you can watch it on your Mobile. You cannot tether the Internet to another device and get the unmetered streaming.

When we first got it I read that any device connected to our Mobile Broadband Modem would be eligible for access to the unlimited streaming as long as it wasn't tethered. Now it seams to not state that and reading through it says now tablets only and1 device? So I am going to need some clear clarification on this as that's not what I Thought and wish I had screen shorted that info as the section seems to have disappeared. We may have a 2 devices or potentially more connected and they may be a PC and a smart blue ray player. What does this mean for us now. I clicked on the full terms link and it doesn't have extra info at all. Not happy if this has changed after committing to it, without any updated communications.

please clarify so we know what we are getting. Was there a change made? Thanks

@MoivefanQld - You'll need to contact us to add the Movie streaming bolt on to the account or you can add this via My Account.

@Query1 - As far as I'm aware we haven't made any changes. Would you be able to send through your account details, full name and DOB? I'll confirm your devices and look into this

That does not answer my question. You must, know, that Presto is now non existent in australia, that is one change that has occured for mobile streaming.

Sorry for the confusion @MoviefanQld, once the Mobile TV bolt-on is added to your service, any changes will automatically be updated on your inclusions as soon as they're announced.

If I get the 50GB mobile broadband plan with Mobile TV Streaming, and a Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and use a MHL/HDMI adapter - I assume this will allow me to watch on my TV?

Hey @mufflaman75, yes the 50GB plan has mobile TV streaming included. With regards to using HDMI cable I'd recommend checking the tablet feature at Optus store.

Hi.

Disappointing that it is not set up for streaming from mobile to TV.

I travel for work and spend a lot of time in hotel rooms.

Seems there are a lot of folks on this thread wondering why it can't be done without using personal data.

How 'bout telling all of us why it isn't set up for this or why it's not possible?

Without an actual explanation kind of makes the whole free streaming thing a hollow gesture.

Kind regards...

Hey @mack74, quite simply streaming is optimised for use on mobile devices and is in standard definition up to 1.5Mbps.Data free Mobile TV streaming is not suitable for tethering, hot-spotting to multiple devices or streaming to a bigger screen using services such as Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. If you do tether or stream to a bigger screen, it will use your included data.

In reality, I only get 3 services: Netflix, Stan, ABC (iview, ABC KIDS iview, ABC ME apps) and 2 which are extra paid subscription, so really only 1 service. Is there any chance I can suggest YouTube app to be added? Otherwise it doesn't seem like much value. Also, I didn't mention Fetch app as it can only view trailers. Do you know if there plans to allow streaming of Fetch TV to the app? The set top box concept is pretty dated.

Hi @Popo1, the value is in the data  that this bolt-on saves you when streaming video over the mobile network. Video streaming accounts for a large slice of most customer's usage each month. There are no plans currently (or at least nothing advised to us) that YouTube will be included in the TV streaming, but never say never. As for Fetch TV app - there is currently a Fetch Mobi product available for Streaming Fetch without the need of a STB. It's a stand alone product not an extra feature of a standard Fetch account  (Mobile TV Streaming offsets the data for Fetch Mobi too) . Details here → https://goo.gl/AtQfxo App

Do you have to have your mobile data turned on while steaming or watching so you can make sure it doesn't use your mobile plan data

Hi @Bobby202 sorry about the delayed response, we've been flat out lately! You will need you mobile data turned on to stream via the selected apps. Provided you're following the instructions outlined (such as standard definition streaming, not downloading etc.) you will not be charged for the data usage.

If i use stan and mirror my screen using a hdmi cable(not chromecast or apple tv) to my tv. Its still using the app on my phone but just plays on the bigger screen  in the same quality as it plays on the phone. Will this use my unmetered data?

Ok. Forgive me if this seems silly but never having used streaming services before I have no clue as to how it goes. Is it simply that we just go via an app to click on a program or via Google to choose a program? Music streaming.. I have no idea how to figure it out. Help

@Brendanmalin That would be unmetered. As far as Optus systems are concerned, you are streaming the video to your phone.

@Margot Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music & iHeart Radio are all music streaming apps/websites covered by the music streaming add-on. Netflix, Stan and ABC iView are video streaming services. If you search for one of these brands online, you can normally try their service for free, or pay a monthly subscription for unlimited access to all of their content.

Streaming music and video on your mobile can use a lot of data, the add-ons offered by Optus essentially waives the data you use within the terms mentioned above.

Hi @Howie79, to use Mobile Tv you just have to view or download the eligible Apps.  Please note Mobile TV streaming is not suitable for streaming to a bigger screen using services such as Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. If you do tether or stream to a bigger screen, it may use your included data.

@Howie79 - This should be okay. What type of iPad is it?
