Thanks to the UAE’s 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday morning, it has made the path to qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ easier for our Socceroos.  Here are the current standings in Group B and below you’ll find a breakdown of the different scenarios facing Australia as they aim to cement their place in the tournament which kicks off next June:

Socceroos win against Japan?

If Australia beat Japan we would take first place on 19 points over Japan (17) and Saudi Arabia (16).

The trip to Russia would be guaranteed before the game against Thailand in Melbourne next week.

Japan and Socceroos draw?

If we draw with Japan, we would still remain qualified as the point leaps us over Saudi Arabia in Group B. We would however then need to win against Thailand next week in Melbourne.

Socceroos lose to Japan?

If we lose to Japan, there’s still hope that we could qualify for the World Cup™ but it would leave Saudi Arabia and Australia tied on 16 points.

We’ll then need to beat Thailand in Melbourne and hope Japan win against Saudi Arabia. If Saudi Arabia beat Japan it would result in a playoff and would then come down to winning margin and goal difference.

All eyes will be on tonight’s big clash against Japan.

Dammit @AlistarS, looks like the Socceroos will now have to play off against Syria and then a CONCACAF team in November to get through. Fingers crossed though!
