Android Software Updates – 31/01/2017

Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 31/01/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Sorry all, we don't have any updates re testing Nougat on the S7 at present. Will hopefully have some good news soon.

Sighs

Nexus and Pixel are currently getting first dibs into 7.1.2 through the Google Beta program.

Looks like we have to wait until the release of GS8/GS8 Plus/Pro to use Nougat and also to bring our business somewhere else.

@guppybetta10 @wozrmx @slfepnipl @Panga Good news! Since publishing this, our software testing team have received the update from Samsung and are now testing. We're expecting an early march completion but keep in mind that's just an estimate and if any bugs are found, it could be pushed out. For more info on the process, please refer here

MattJ thank you for the update.

By then S8/S8 Plus/Pro would have been released as well...

Afterall, it's still good news for S7/S7Edge users ☺️

Hallelujah! Some movement at the station about s7 edge. Its sad that us users of flagship phones are estatic from such snail pace from Samsung and Optus. If you didnt know it, you wouldnt be blamed for thinking optus was actually a 4th tier telco reselling a reseller's product line! Thats how much we are being taken for granted.

Any updates on the P9? As I have stated a few times on these forums unbranded P9's in Australia have already recieved the 7.0 upgrade - sureley you must be able to contact Huawei to get the process moving rather than just sititng around waiting?

Hey @MattJ, thanks for the update! Would it be possible to ask someone from the testing team if there's a new menu present in this update? Settings -> Sounds and Vibration -> Volume -> Menu (top right) -> Media Volume Limiter

Apparently some S7 variants now have this in the Nougat update, whilst others don't. Thanks! Smiley Happy

Is there a reason why it takes so long to test it ?

Could users participate in this as well ; similar to beta testing with people signing up for testing

@MattJ, does that include the Note5?

savage01
by Contributor savage01

@Panda968 Yes you can still use your phone on Optus if you flash the BTU firmware then flash back to Optus (OPS) firmware when released or even better the unbranded Aussie (XSA) firmware.

Fingers crossed it doesn't take a month for testing and yes whom ever suggested "beta testing for optus" is a great idea.

What's happening with the galaxy 6 edge plus? There's no comment or anything in relation to the nougat update. And after all it was released last march

Funsky

‎2017-02-06 09:33 PM

If you outsource your beta testing, like most cost-oriented telcos do, I cant ever imagining the service provider doing your IT agreeing to lose income by revealing to consumers their test scripts and waiving the billing opportunity for hired monkies to do the testing (and then adding their management overheads). Not all best ideas win the fight in the innovation contest.

Please tell me what happened to Samsung Galaxy A5 which innitially was said to be testing for android 7.0 , now it seems to have disappeared from this same update of 31st Jan. 2017.

The past 2 mornings my alarms have not gone off on my Galaxy S7 due to my phone being unresponsive. The only way to make it usable again is by ejecting the sim tray. I charge my phone over night with a standard charger not the fast charger. This is how it has been since I've had this phone with the exception of today and yesterday it's been great. What could be causing this?

slfepnipl
by Occasional Contributor slfepnipl

Are we getting the Jan/Feb security patch at all or do we have to wait till the March security patch alongside the release of Nougat. Also, just to double confirm: are we getting 7.0 or 7.1.2?

Sam_D
by Valued Contributor
‎2017-02-07 02:31 PM

Not to worry, @Farhan_01 - this just means we haven't received any new information from the manufacturer Smiley Happy Once we're updated we'll keep you posted here.

Definitely not the norm, @savage01. If ejecting the SIM seems to be a temporary fix we might need to organise a replacement for you. If you head in to your local Optus Shop our team in store would be happy to give you a hand in organising one. Alternatively you're welcome to send me a PM with your full name, DOB and mobile number so we can have one sent out.

Sorry @slfepnipl - this isn't something we can confirm at this stage. Stay tuned for updates Smiley Happy

Hey,

I seem to be having trouble with getting wifi calling to work on my s7. Where i leave there is poor reception but i do have nbn. I am connect to my wifi and have set wifi calling to wifi preferred but when i make a call, the call seems to still be poor. Sometimes cut out. Am i using it right?

Also i am excited to see nougat is finally ready for optus testing. I know this goes against others thoughts but no hurry. Better to have a well built and stable Operating system then a unstable and broken one Smiley Wink

savage01
by Contributor savage01
‎2017-02-09 12:11 AM

@RonBurgundy if your not familiar with flashing firmware on your phone I don't recommend doing it as you may brick your phone or void your warranty. But if you choose to do it you need to get the latest Odin software and the BTU firmware from either sammobile (website) or samfirm  (program). Backup your phone. Install samsung drivers. Launch Odin, place appropriate files in the proper place and flash. Phone also needs to be in download mode. Plenty of tutorials on YouTube. Do this at your own risk.

I have now official nougat on my S7 working flawlessly with the instructions above.

Why is there nothing happening or testing with HTC M9 or 10? Other competitors have testing or complete. Unlocked phones have the software already.

Also I can't even see any HTC10 in your stores anymore, clearly disappointing since its still part of your blurb including HTC as phones you carry. So I won't be able to get a HTC phone if I want to when upgrading in a month or so? Or change carriers...???
