Android Software Updates - 30/08/2018

Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 30/08/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro Testing what since  3rd week in "JUNE", i guess its time to hand them back as Optus have absolutly not provided support or fixes for this devise since June 2018, must be time to head down the ACCC path.

I came for the Nexus P6 and that had updates direct from Google and my son now has the phone and its has version 8.1.7. unlike my buggy new phone with 8.0. I guess the lesson from all this is that don't let your provider dictate your firmware either root the device and just get the latest firmware direct from the manufacture or go to a Google phone. I ditched Samsung phones as there firmware was so woeful, now in hindsight i guess it was my network provider and not Samsung.  I guess at some point the manufacturers like Samsung, LG , Huawei and Oppo should break the shackles and go direct to the consumer like TV and audio manufacturers. As for the updates your network provider is the issue and not the manufacture, Optus have been in testing since June or so they say. As customers we are being given a poor service and we actually pay for that with our fees and charges. We also have to remember that Huawei are providing security patches every month, May is the last time the Optus provided Hauwei users and that leaves all users of the Mate10 exposed.

You can rebrand your phone with a company that runs a website I won't mention their name. It costs $100 or something US. Kind of like breaking out of a locked phone. Or you can do it manually which carries great risk. I don't know how optus would feel about doing it to a contracted phone though. I really wonder what the explanation optus has for testing updates before they release them. They have already been verified by Huawei and the test populations of wherever they were beta'd.

Optus have advised me i can return my phone at anytime due to my issues. The issue i have is my business are with Optus so i am sort of locked in but, here is a copy of my transcript to Huawei customer support and if you buy the phone outright Huawei can send you by OTA the latest updates regardless of your carrier.

ME

Hi, silly question of the day, how can i change my Huawei mate 10 Pro to get its updates direct from Huawei and not my phone network provider?

Support

So we can see that the phone is purchased from Optus. Therefore, any updates will be provided or pushed through Optus.

ME

If i purchase outright from JB HIFI a P20 Pro and put it on the Optus network where would my updates come from?

Support

Off course if it purchased outright, then we can send you the updates directly, We can push this updates to your phone via over the air (OTA)

Lesson of the day buy your phone outright and not from the provider of your network as then the updates come direct from the manufacture.

I see it was advertised on the 25th March that the update to 8.0 was coming for the P9 (advertised in Tusted reviews) , i guess welcome to the Optus  waiting game, it now seems not to be a one with the Mate 10 Pro but all phones supported by optus.

Hi Ted, just been doing some digging arround in the firmwares and it seems on Optus the Samsung S8 is still on Andriod 7 but, Android 8.0 Oreo was first available: August 21, 2017, i guess its across the board that carriers dont like to do updates.

I'm optimistic! That's all I can be! One of the moderators says they will be testing android 9 until 2020. If by August 2020 optus haven't released android 9.0 on mate 10 pro, I will rebrand... might even do it beforehand... I don't know the consequences of rebranding though. Might not even work on optus afterwards. But europe is the place to buy a Huawei, they get updates twice a month!!

@Pony64 The S8 was updated to Android 8.0 Oreo in March. It wasn't that long after Samsung released the Oreo update.

@Pommster My mistake, obviosly Samsung are on better terms that Huawei are with Optus.

Ok today is the day i cracked and WHY? new EMUI 8.0.11.370 was sent to me for my Mate 10 Pro, but the firmware is to old to run it so it defaults back.. to 8.0.0 bought the P20 from JB hifi, the 10 Pro goes back and my phone contact is cancelled. Well done Optus for not supporting a devise you sell. The best part is get bi monthly security fixes and the latest firmware direct from Huawei and not Optus.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but switching back to apple with optus. I checked out whether it was even possible to rebrand my mate 10 pro yesterday. Turns out you can't do it anymore as Huawei has stopped letting you unlock the bootloader which is a pre-requisite and I don't think you were ever able to do it in Australia in the first place anyway. So it looks like I'm stuck with it. It's actually a really great phone on paper. The problem is Optus, I regret purchasing this phone and would have rathered pay a bit more to get a phone that updates regularly.

@Teddancing are you sure u cant rebrand using FF? And Optus im too busy to lodge an ACCC report as i have midsemster exams but if i dont have my update by the end of midsems(18th) I am going straight to ACCC. (law student here)

Ok,  the Huawei Mate 10 Pro went back,  bought the P20 Pro outright from JB. All my past Mate 10 Pro issues have gone.

Forward of Iphone X photos now works

Optus voice mails now works

I can now voice dial from my car

Yamaha App no longer freezes

Recived security update dated 1st of August

P20 inprovements, better camera, sound quality far better.
