Android Software Updates.pngWhen a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 30/05/2016. If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

Hey @anthony I've just added the Z5 Premium to the list. Have you checked out the review caaf wrote about it? https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Premium-Review/ba-p/154845

How are you finding it?

I had a look through the 'What's the process?' section for what 'testing on hold' meant, and I couldn't determine what this means. I have a M9 and have been waiting for the marshmellow update for some time. Has there been another delay? Have other update been placed under higher priority? I want that doze functionality.

I was wondering if you are working on the LG G4 6.0.1 update as the 6.0 is causing my phone to unable to receive or send MMS messages. I have tried calling and get hung up on been into two different stores saying they also get hung up on. This has now been for over 2 months. Can you please provide some information. Thank You

Hi Optus,
Sony has release Android 6.0 for Z3 and Z3 compact almost 2 months ago now. In fact, i have two sony Z3 compact, one bought from Optus and this other one  somewhere else. The Non optus device has updated to Androind 6.0, whereas the Optus device is still stuck to android 5.1. Looking at this page, It doesn't seems that you guys have even start to test android 6.0? What aere you doing? If new updates are important to me, would you advise me to go and get my Handset somewhere else than optus?

Regards

@Andy Hey Andy, Hardware specs are quite good, excellent display and camera, software is not so good. Constant lag, poor battery life and daily restarts are required. From what I have read on the Sony forums majority of these issues are addressed with Android 6.0.1. Hopefully this is pushed through quickly and 6.0 is not made available as this is riddled with bugs.

Just checked for some more info @suburbanbert and it's on hold due to a request from HTC. Hopefully this isn't for too long, once there's an update I'll let you know!

@Surfkid88 no details yet on 6.0.1, once we've started testing we'll include this info in these updates.

Will the monthly security patches be pushed out for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5? Current patch level is April 2 2016 for Android 6, but there is a May patch.

Hey Optus community mods.

Some humble feedback

- I couldn't sign into community with my existing optus account, so now i have another optus account to remember, main, one for perks, now this...

- It says above in bold when marked "completed" etc... except none are marked completed. Does current version mean completed? Does current version mean it should have already been updated on my device? Does current version mean it's been sent back to the manufacturer to roll out?

- Are updates determined by sim in device or region of phone? i.e. say a US samsung had an optus sim in it, would that device get updated in line with your timetable or some other?

- I'm using an Unlocked S6 SM-G20i with optus sim.. table says current is 6 but i still have 5.1.1. Can i expect 6 soon? Or does current mean you are currently testing it?

Your expertise is solving my enquiries would be most appreciated.

Kind regards,

Optus customer

@Optus

Chatted to samsung, my device is an open international variant. The agent tried to help but got the feeling he couldn't.

End result seems to be the update has nothing to do with my sim or carrier and relies on some other thing the agent could not define...

Back to square one.. waiting and hoping...

Hey @Pommster just confirmed an update for Note 5 expected to be completed by mid June and includes patches.

Jawsone - Thanks for the feedback, we're looking into an option to use your existing account to login to Yes Crowd. The current versions are what's available now for devices purchased with Optus. Ones that are marked as testing will be marked as completed once testing has finished.

I'm looking for some information about the monthly security patches that phone manufacturers create. I have an LG G4 and while I love the phone, there has been no updates since March, with the security patch being 6 months old as of today. It seems a little rediculous, since I know that there are updates in other phone regions that have the May security patch and battery enhancements. It is possible to flash these files without voiding warranty or modifying the system in any way beyond flashing a new firmware. Is it LG Australia that doesnt supply you with the monthly updates, or are the major firmware updates the only sort of updates that Optus cares about?

Hi @Edgedancer and @fatatra we haven't received any new info on updates for these phones yet. Once we receive the latest version from the manufacturer we'll provide the details on testing and expected completion in these updates.

Hi @Andy,

I feel that you missed the point of my message. I am wondering about the process you have. I understand that you have nothing at the moment, but I would like to know what sort of priority you place on updates. Heck, the security patch for the update when I recieved it in March was 2 months out of date when it arrived on my phone.

Edgedancer - As Andy has mentioned previously on detailing our process: "All manufacturer's have their own process for releasing updates to devices. Once we test and approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks." Optus has every intention of testing any upgrades that become available as soon as we can. To answer to your question more directly, we place a very high priority or testing updates as soon as we receive them.

fatatra - Although there may be info available online regarding the update being available, the manufacturer also advises that availability varies between regions and countries. As I've mentioned above, we do everything we can to begin testing any upgrades that are made available to us as soon as we can - Shae

This is what I am talking about. An update has been issued in other regions, but we are at risk.

If we've not received an update to test Edgedancer, there wouldn't be any action that we could take to request the manufacturer to release it to us before they are ready to release it to us. As I've mentioned previously, there's only a short time between when we receive an update and begin testing it. As soon as we receive it, our software updates pages will be updated accordingly.

@Andy, thanks for your reply about Note 5 patch, but I think your table needs rewording. The Note 5 is already on 6.0.1, so the patch will just be an update to that.

Hi Optus. A little off topic, but I decided to flash my imported S7 with Optus software (so that in the future, I may be able to access specific features like VoLTE and VoWiFi). I have the toggle for VoLTE in settings but nothing happens (don't know if thats because of activation wait or only IMEI's from Optus), but will the IMEI restriction for VoLTE eventually be lifted so that someone like me could access the service?

Hi just wondering if the Note 4 SM-910g from Optus has been forgotten??? Everywhere in the world is recieving updates but as always Optus is almost a year late..

Worth adding Oppo F1 to the list, this receives regular incremental updates from Oppo and recently received one in April that hasn't come through to the Optus version as yet.

Hi Optus,

Are you planning to ever bring Marshmallow to the Note 4, or is that a dead device now?

Thanks,

Contributor adamhumphrey

@dseitamI asked this a few days ago and yet again no reply to my comment.. Old phones are forgotten after you purchase one.

@adamhumphrey @dseitam this might help you here. samsung is probably at fault on your current predicament. i think of optus as a store, you wouldnt goto jb-hi fi and demand them to update your HP laptop.

Is the same process followed for android security patches?

My G4 is still at Android Security Patch level 01-01-2016, however I have other android devices which have a more recent security patch level. I thought the security patches were released and applied regularly.

Hi,

Wondering when the marshmallow update is coming to the Sony xperia z3 compact , it's been out while , we should have this update already

I've had a HTC One M8 for 18mths at least and it has only had one system update that I can recall about 1yr ago. In the last 2wks it has decided to not send mms messages at all, even when it's only converted to a mms due to size. Generic network failure is the reason for this the notification says then proceeds to send error report to HTC. I have not changed any of the settings nor installed or updated anything to do with this since the last system update. If it's already running on 6 why is it having issues now?? Thanks in advance for any helpful answers to resolve this annoying, inconvenient problem 😊
