Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 29/01/2019. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Is Note 9 currently testing or testing complete?

Is the Samsung Galaxy S8 going to be updated to Android 9.0 anytime?

Occasional Contributor MrYJDrake
Occasional Contributor

Good to see we finally have an update.

Can't understand why Mate20 Pro is on an october update still, and the early November update is still in testing.

At this point, is it possible to get off Optus's branded version and onto Stock EMUI? This is a security risk surely.

So what year is optus going to provide 9.0.0.183 firmware version to the Mate 20 Pro, countries like Morrocco and Israel have this firmware, with January security patches.

Why is optus so far behind. You are so useless

Issue the unbranded firmware. This service is unacceptable.

ACCC have been notified as per instructions from consumer affairs.

Prediction Late January, what they really mean is they have no friggin clue, so it might be mid to late February.

@Dan_C @Optus @@Optus So where is our explanation which you are now more than 2 weeks overdue with a response for the delay. And what are you doing about getting the latest firmware version underway. If you don't reply to this within 24 hours I WILL be contacting corporate office and making a complaint against you, if it's too hard for you designate it to one of the 1000s of other OPTUS employees.

Wondering when the samsung galaxy tab s4 will be listed here, I have had one since May last year through Optus. Have had a couple of security updates via OTA, so obviously getting updates, but no listing here for a product I contracted through you. Would be nice to know whats upcoming. Any plans for listing the tab s4 on this forum.

Funnily I got off phone with huawei about an hr ago. She has spoken with the hardware team and has my serial number etc and has requested they manually push the update to me. Whether this is valid or not I don't know. Either way she can't see why there has been such a delay

Occasional Contributor MrYJDrake
Occasional Contributor

@SteveVif that works, can you PM me her details, I'd like to get mine done too.

If it does work could you also advise on the following:

  • Once it installed, did your phone still carry Optus branding
  • Did it reset any settings or hard reset your phone at all
  • What version did they push

Cheers!

According to huawei, 9.0.0.126 was pushed out to Australia back in November so what exactly was optus doing with that for so long that we never received it?

Contributor SteveV
Contributor

@Dazkatmaka11 weird thing is she was saying 9.0.0.149 of all things was the latest for open handsets. I think their internal build numbers are different to the external.

Regular Contributor
Regular Contributor

@SteveV I told them that there's a guy here bought his handset outright from the UAE and he received the .183 which kind of stumped them, I told them I have the screen shot which shows the build number. But I've been escalated for a call within 24 hours so I guess we'll see what happens from Huawei. At least they are responding quicker than optus. I sent @Dan_C a private message request he answers our question why it's delayed.

If there's no response nb noon tomorrow I will contact head office and make sure that someone sorts this debacle out.

I wouldn't mind so much if we had received updates to fix the current issues and improvements, but we have only got the initial .122 and according to consumer affairs Vic, they could be in breach of contract because the handset is deemed faulty if software is causing usage issues.

Samsung one ui and Android 9.0 pie is about to be 10 days overdue and the best you can give me is testing. You guys are pathetic when are you going to stop playing around with it and give it to us. Why do you guys even test it; Samsung does. Vigorous testing before realeasing an update.

Visitor Matt122

@SteveV since you have called the manufacturer; did they manually push it out to you. If they did I might try the same thing with Samsung.

@Matt122 I spoke to them today and I'm exoexpect a call from Huawei in the next 24 hours, they said that this could be possible to do but then kept refferrre to Optus, I said it's taken them 2 months and they still stuffing around with the .146 and I don't want to wait until Christmas to receive the next update.

Hopefully they can be convinced to push it out if they understand that critical issues need to be fixed.

It’s honestly so disappointing having to wait for important updates this long. The latest software update for Samsung devices was released in Australia more than two weeks ago and so far all unlocked devices can download it. Why do we have to wait so long for Optus to put their bloatware (which serves absolutely no purpose) on each single update?

Also the extra bloatware is annoying. For example every time I turn off or restart my device I get the YES OPTUS logo pushed onto my screen and my home screen is covered in useless Optus widgets.

Why doesn’t Optus allow the actual phone manufacturer to send updates to their devices without having to go through them and testing that has already been performed?

iPhones receive updates from Apple themselves regardless of whether they are bought unlocked or locked so why does Optus take advantage of Android phones like this?

Hey guys, excuse my delayed response to this one.

Just regarding any subsequent updates following the roll out of 9.0.0.146

I can assure you guys that issue has been raised with Huawei

I'll send another update out once I've received our next device testing report. That should happen at a later stage this afternoon.

Here's a message received from Huawei just over an hour ago.

We fully understand where you're coming from and are terribly sorry for the delay in updates for our devices under Optus' network.

We've had a check with our Software teams and we'd like to note that the update is about to be ready to be sent out for our Mate 20 Pro models under Optus so please stay tuned to our Updaters at Settings>System>System Update and HiCare app via WiFi Smiley Happy

This is why the firmware updates MUST be left to the manufacturer, even when the mate 20 Pro gets this update we are still 2 months behind the current version, it's not acceptable.

There are issues that need immediate attention, someone tried to call me today, however my handset never received it, this is not the first time this has happened.

The latest firmware update 9.0.0.183 needs to be issued to mate 20 Pro handsets immediately.

Mate 20 Pro firmware both 9.0.0.166 & 9.0.0.183 change logs both state that. ...... Signal quality improvement in some scenarios, I have had quite a few missed calls which I'm told that it just rings out and my handset never received a call, I've noticed that my volte symbol dropsvin and out in the status bar, I never had any issues with my mate 9 signal quality in the same location.

I need my phone to be ready for medical reasons incase of any emergency my health may suffer, I can't afford to have call issues.

This is why I need the latest version updates

So Unbrand the handsets and let us get the latest firmware and the quality of service we are paying for.

When we finish testing, the update is sent back to the manufacturer, who'll push the update out over the course of usually a couple of weeks @Kingbilly78

It won't hit all devices immediately.

Seems that Huawei really don't know what they are doing, I'm pretty sure that receiving updates direct would be all messed up, when I talked to huawei they seem to be confused with their own build numbers, it's not really Optus fault that they don't have the right build to test. I guess we just need testing to be a lot faster when it is received.

Contributor SteveV
Contributor

Yes I found severe inconsistency in huawei and quite poor answers from their team. The huawei aust team couldn't give a straight answer about why other regions have 9.0.0.18x and Australia apparently latest is 9.0.0.149. When I queried what android patch level 149 was she couldn't answer me just kept repeating that 149 is the latest and the build would be c34e10r1p16 and couldn't Get it in her head that c34e10r1p16 is the model specific not the patch level.

@lsa123 I probably think that optus were testing the.126, eecrecei .146 from Huawei and then abandoned it and started testing 146. Ive just got off a call from Huawei when I said about the latest firmware version she said I would have to wait for optus. which I told her bullpoo how can optus test it when you haven't sent them it. I told them to stop messing around and sort it out, apparently she's going back to the technical team to make more enquiries. They have no clue what they are doing.

@Optus @Dan_C. Still no update, it's the 4th February already. What is happening with the Mate 20 Pro are we going to receive the current tested version? Also are you going to be working straight to testing the latest firmware version, latest firmware now is 9.0.0.187. We are slipping further behind every week. This really isn't acceptable for a flagship released device, customers expect top rate service, that's what we are paying for.

If a "high-end" Hauwei device can't do the basic thing a cellular device should do, i.e., make and receive calls without being disconnected then I think people are better of buying another phone from another manufacture. Just saying. If it was me, I would return the phone immediately.

Regular Contributor
Regular Contributor

@Sasman Yes that's true, I should have kept my old phone or opted for a new pixel. I wanted the new Android P, the only reason I swayed to the mate 20 Pro was because the Mate 9 I had was solid, never had a problem. And since I spend more time in hospital which is 3.5 hours from home because they are the closest that can provide my special treatment, I need a reliable connection. It's not the signal quality because I have full bars when it drops out.

Frequent Contributor
Frequent Contributor

@pauliking You're right that this isn't a third world problem since most developing countries are actually ahead of us with updates to this phone. Optus are lagging behind pretty much every other carrier in the world now.

While @Dazkatmaka11 might be a tad overzealous, I don't think there's anything wrong with being upset about receiving inadequate aftersales support. Especially when its for an expensive flagship device that was only just released a couple months ago.

Just because there are people worse off than us in the world doesn't mean we should have to put up with crappy customer service..

@pauliking As I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago, I wouldn't be too bothered about receiving updates if we had of already received the firmware versions that fix Call Dropout signal quality, Google messages fix and google maps fix plus a few other bug fixes. But since we are still on the original firmware version from the November device release and these issues have not been fixed it's not right that we should have to use buggy software because optus are too useless to release the fixes in a timely manner.like I mentioned my phone is a medical necessity. Not too far back I had to pull over and call an ambulance, I spent two weeks in ICU. If the call had of dropped in the middle of calling an ambulance, I could have died because by the time the ambulance got to me I was in seizure and had to be resuscitated.

@Dazkatmaka11 I'm so sorry to hear about your health problems mate. Hope you get well soon. Well for your sake, hope Optus releases the necessary patches soon.

@Dazkatmaka11 I to am sorry to hear of your health problems, BUT WTF are you doing here if the issue is life threatening. Buggered if i'd be wasting my time in a forum or waiting for a firmware if my life actually depended on it. I would be down the store if on contract and demand a replacement of the same or different phone under warranty. If you bought it outright I would be on that doorstep. Failing that I would get a cheap prepaid phone and stick the sim in it until the issue is resolved. In the meantime as you say, your life is at serious risk because your hanging on for a firmware that you dont even know WHEN it will come for sure or if it WILL fix your handset. I know what i'd do if my life was at risk.

@pauliking Yes those issues have been explored and consequently the ourcout has all been raised with the TIO ombudsman. As for other phone I have a budget constraint but have asked around if anyone has an old unlocked or optus handset to lend.

This is why I am on optus/huawei back so much. The .146 should resolve issues hopefully, I just don't know why it's taken optus 2 months to test a relatively minor firmware. It's not like it's a new android version

I still have FH credit, seriously considering using it once this new patch is on there.

Just need to work out how to do the FH update on a mac.. @Optus, you suck.
