Android Software Updates.pngWhen a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 27/07/2016. If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

Hi @verbatym, have you tried restarting your phone? If you still can't find the update after that, download the Samsung SmartSwitch application for PC or Mac and plug your phone into your computer and it'll search for and download the latest update available. Good luck

MattJ

@verbatym you should definitely have received the update by now if your handset was provided by Optus and you haven't made any changes to the software yourself. @danz207 has offered some great suggestions, could you let me know if you've tried those? Can you confirm that you purchased your handset from Optus as well? Easiest way to confirm that you have Optus branded software on your handset is that you'd see an Optus logo when you switch it on as part of the loading screen.

Thanks @MattJ for the reply I bought this phone on a a opt us contract back in November 2015. But when I turn the phone on and off I don't see any optus logos at all. All I see is the name of the phone powered by android, then the Samsung logo. The only optus word is YES OPTUS in the top left hand side and when I pull down the top screen

MattJ

@verbatym I've just tested on a colleagues S6 in the office (couldn't find someone with an S6 Edge+) and they definitely have the Optus logo while the phone loads but it may have changed for the Edge+ and Note 5. Is there any chance you've had a third party firmware loaded onto your handset? And the handset definitely came from Optus? As in you didn't purchase it from somewhere and then insert an Optus SIM into it?

@MattJ 100% this is from optus and I have never updated the phone since I got it in November 2015. I got it in the Bourke st store in Melbourne.

MattJ

ok no problems @verbatym, you should definitely have got the update then. Last question, can you go to settings > About Device > Software Updates and then check for an update but also make sure the "auto update" function is checked (I'd recommend also checking the Wi-Fi only option to save data as the updates can be quite large).

verbatym

@MattJ yep all checked it says the latest updates have been installed

MattJ

OK thanks for that @verbatym. One last thing you can try is backing the phone up and then doing a factory restore. Backing it up is important because the restore will wipe everything from the phone. Alternatively, the next step is to head into an Optus store to have the phone looked at. They'll then be able to tell you the best course of action to get it fixed as everything you've told me tells me the phone should be receiving the update.

i have an S5 and im hoping you can clear something up for me, in the 6.0 update will we be receiving the stock quick settings from android? personally im not a fan of the quick settings/notification panel on my current phone that seems to come on the optus phone...

@MattJ @danz207 @Optus I want to thank you both of you guys with my galaxy s6 edge+ problems. I did a factory reset and it worked saying that i can upgrade the software . Again thanks

@turnerrZ94 That's not an Optus software issue, that's a Samsung one. And you'll never see that on Samsung firmware.

Glad to see something happening with the Galaxy S5. How long has it been in testing?

MattJ
Forums Community Manager

@verbatym Fantastic! Something must have been stuck somewhere which can happen from time to time. Enjoy the OS upgrade 🙂

@turnerrZ94 Going from what you've said, it sounds like you're referring to Samsungs varient of Android as @danz207 has suggested. If that's the case, we have no control over that sorry.

@savage01 I believe it started earlier this week. Hopefully no bugs are found and testing is completed in the next week or so and then Samsung can push it out to you and other S5 users 🙂

Hi, I have only just signed up to Optus and have been told that I need to update the version of my Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 to version 4.4+ (it is currently at 4.3).  I note from the latest updates list that the version is now 5.0.1???    I have tried the update option from my phone but it just says that the latest updates have been installed?   I have tried switching the phone off and on again and making sure that the Auto update and wifi options are checked, but still no joy.

Can anyone help me with this please/ any ideas?

Thanks

@stulesod I had the same problem with my galaxy s6 edge+. Back everything up using smart switch on your computer which is a fantastic program then do a factory reset of the phone and then it should have the current update.

MattJ

Hi @stulesod, as @verbatym has mentioned, sometimes a factor reset can help in this situation. Please be sure to fully back up your phone first though, I don't want you losing any data. Before you do the reset though, you've mentioned you've just joined Optus. Did you get the phone from us as well? The reason why I ask is because I don't believe we sell the S4 anymore which leads me to believe you may have brought it across from an old carrier or possibly you bought it outright. Could you clarify for me as this will impact the way you receive updates.

@Jezza70 No sorry, VoLTE won't be anabled via this update

stulesod

Hi MattJ,  You're correct I didn't get the phone from Optus, I brought it over from my previous carrier (Vodaphone).

Can you explain why this would impact on the way I receive update or indeed why I cannot receive updates now I have joined Optus as when I joined I specifically asked if it would be compatible and I would have no problem using my S4 on the day I signed up online.  I have also found that since transferring to Optus I cannot use Samsung Kies to back up my files/data, it now doesn't recognise the phone?

MattJ
Forums Community Manager

@stulesod the way that Android software updates work is that each carrier tests the update against their network prior to it being released to their customers. This results in a slightly different variant being released for each carrier in Australia. Now we're only involved in the testing process when it comes to handsets with the Optus variant of the operating system. As yours would most likely have the Vodafone variant on it, the update we tested and approved won't be made available to you. That's not to say that your handset isn't compatible with the Optus network it just means when it comes to software updates, they'll come from Vodafone, not us.

Hi MattJ

Thanks for your response regarding VoLTE.  I found the Optus page in regard to this. In addition to my previous comment do you know if Optus is planning to make VoLTE avaiable for earlier samsung galaxy models?

MattJ

@Jezza70 no news on that at this stage sorry. Keep an eye on that page though as it will have all the most up to date info on VoLTE from Optus

Hi there!

Any new updates for the Optus branded Galaxy Tab A 9.7 4G LTE (SM-P555)?

It never seems to be on your list, and yet worldwide updates have already been released.

Thanks, Will

Just updated my Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 6.0.1. The update proceeded smoothly and took less than 30 minutes. The only problem I have come across is that there is no option to use my fingerprint after a reboot - it only will allow the backup password to be entered. I can use my fingerprint to unlock a screen - it is just after a reboot that there is no option to use my fingerprint.

I can confirm the update is available for the Galaxy S5 which I'm currently downloading.  It's a fairly sizeable download about 1.8GB so had to clear some space on my phone.  Phone was purchased from Optus

I have downloaded the update from OTA 3 times now and each time when it reboots into recovery mode it gets to about 25% then fails.

I have performed 2 factory resets still no luck.

Kies 3 says im on the latest.....which is 5.0.

Make sure you have enough internal memory free, it will need atleast 3.6gb when unloaded via the ota.

Hope this helps..

@Bubbahumche

Thanks for the tip but i as i said i have factory reset and have 8.46Gb available space.

The OTA update says its only a little over 900Mb?

savage01

905.22 to be exact.

Can anyone confirm the size?

I think its was 958mb download for me 🙂 or very close to it

@savage01

Its seems you will need to upload it manually.

Best way to do this is download Samfirm from xda website. Use google to do search. Then download odin also from xda website, follow the steps for both software, if not followed correctly, you could brick your phone.

Have you also tried wipe data in recovery mode and then wipe cache then reboot. Power up/volume button and home button at the same time. To enter recovery mode. I would try this first. Good luck..you will get there..

Thanks @Bubbahumche I have the tool you suggested and it doesnt find the 6.0.1 update just the 5.0 😞

Im familiar with odin as well as i have rooted and run custom roms in the past but currently running stock optus 5.0 to get the update.

Man, this is a tough one. Only suggestion would be to take it too samsung store if you have one near you i guess,  or use kies samsung recovery in preferences. Lets just hope the pit isnt partitioned? But is you have lollipop running aus rom, this should affect it. Wish i could help you more, best in luck you will get there..

Ps mm is ok, im running the inu rom since april on my note edge. Its faster than the voda rom that was released last week. Optus is pending binary load at the present. Hopefully will test it over the weekend.

I'm having exactly the same problem as @savage01 trying to upgrade to 6.0.1. My S5 is unbranded official Australian stock and I've done a factory reset and have 8.5GB available space. Can someone from Optus please take a look at this problem? After 3 attempts I'm parking the upgrade for now.

I have the same problem.  I have a Galaxy S5 (SM-G900I from Optus shop) with 6GB free memory.  Upgrade download is a bit over 900MB.  Upgrade install fails at about 25%.  I tried 3 times with same result.  Kies says firmware is up to date.  Despite that, I tried Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization in Kies as recommended on a number of websites and that simply reinstalled v5.0.

I updated my Galaxy S6 edge about two weeks ago to the 6.0.1 update and while it fixed my battery life issues, i now have problems connecting to the internet, wi-fi, bluetooth in my car and my emails do not sync on schedule as before!

I have tried restarting the phone, clearing cache etc and nothing! I did notice the other day that my phone is saying there is another software update "update the firmware to the latest version". Why is there another update if i only just did one two weeks ago?

Redhead65

@savage01 About half an hour ago I followed the advice of richo64 over on the Whirlpool forum at http://whrl.pl/ReGvnq and this has solved my update problem. Please note that I didn't do the second factory reset after upgrading. I did choose to set up my S5 as a new device during the 6.0.1 update rather than restore from a Google cloud backup.

Further to my previous post:  after spending quite a lot of time setting up my phone again I found the post above from @Redhead65and gave an OTA upgrade one more try – and this time it worked. Yeah

Was there a difference in update size of the OTA update after doing the steps above?

How do i reinstall via kies? The initialization option?

Warwick_T

The size of the v6.0 update was unchanged i.e. a bit over 900MB.  The Kies update (i.e. reinstall 5.0) is via Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization.  And of course do a full backup before updating.

@Redhead65 @Warwick_T

Thanks heaps for the info and suggestions, after reinstalling via kies then performing the OTA upsate i have upgraded to 6.0.1. It shouldnt have been that hard but with thanks to the community it got done.

To all with Note 4 on MM

Please do me a favour and go to settings -> Backup and reset and inform me are you seeing the Backup account with a message that no backup account is currently storing data on this device and the option is greyed out?

I have at least one other person o AU firmware reporting this issue even after factory reset. I am arguing with Samsung that it's a firmware bug as they want me to RMA the phone.

I am trying to gain some firepower to let Samsung know its a firmware bug not an issue with my phone and need others to confirm if seeing the issue. This is a bifg deal if you see the problem it means the MM backup feature which backs up apps to Google Drive is not working so reset your phone and no backup!

Please check for me if you have the issue! Thanks

Great to finally have 6.0.1 on my old GS5 (SM-G900I)! At least the kids can use it for another two years until they get my GS7e! At 925Mb make sure to be on wifi or connected to your computer to update.

@Optus

I posted an issue in this thread how the MM backup feature is broken where it tells you in Backup and Reset under settings that there is no account sotring backed up data

This issue affects all Australian firmwares for all carriers and unbranded

Another carrier has conifirmed in their forum that Samsung have finally confirmed its an issue in their firmware and are going to fix it but I want to ensure that it will also be fixed for Optus as well not just the other carrier.

Please can you check with Samsung to ensure this issue is also fixed with the Optus firmware as well. Thankyou

I have a similar issue with my HTC Desire 820, but its stuck on the update prior: 4.4. I cannot update to 5, and I cannot update to 6.0. I tried factory resetting it, the issue still persists. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to know if anyone has noticed with the Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 that the option to choose which app you wanted to open has now been removed? For example I have two video apps and sometimes had to choose which to use depending on the file format.  With the update if I choose the video app I want to use it automatically becomes the default app for all video files. I then have to go through the process of having to go to the app manager and clearing it as the default app. Is this an issue for just the S5 or has the choice to choose which app to use when opening a file has been removed from Marshmallow?

icanfly77
Member
Member

@Jezza70

Unfortunately this is a stupid change to MM. It does not give you the option to select which app you want as the default when you first open something with no default set and whatever you choose in this screen gets set to default automatically

A stupid change as sometimes the first app you choose to view file etc may not be the best one.. so yes to change it you have to go back and clear defaults and repeat the process again and now select the second app to open with..

@Jezza70

I may have been incorrect with my last comment and nothing do with MM at all but is something Samsung changed or maybe a bug in Samsung..
