When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 27/07/2015 (list has been updated again on 03/08/2015) If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

Hmm it only seems like yesterday that I got my brand new Galaxy S3. I guess the hardware in the phone won’t allow it to go any further than 4.3.0 Smiley Sad

When are the Optus team going to start testing/releasing the update for the Xperia Z3? It's reasonable to ask whether the Optus team should be in the midst of at the very least testing it, if Sony themselves have started releasing certified updates for this model (D6553).

@Yeldarb Time flys when it comes to technology these days! It's amazing to see how far handsets, and everything else for that matter, has come when you look back.

@simplycurious We haven't received the update from Sony to test yet. If/when we do, we'll start testing it and provide the updated information to everyone

A critical problem on s6 update?? critical being one of the bloatware installtion isn't working properly. I don't understand how it's been passed for months on other carriers around the world, but somehow it takes this long to be passed in Aus?

When is the s4 5.0 update coming out? The current 4.4.2 release has a horrible glitch that interferes with flac playback.

Just realised this after putting our cd library into this format 😢

@daraing whilst the update may have been released in other parts of the world, we only received it in the last 2-3 weeks to begin testing. Given we're testing its compatability with our network then it's entirely possible for us to find problems that others didn't.

@joelandmitzi We haven't received it for testing yet. If/when we do, we'll add it to the update 🙂

Just received the 5.0 update for my Galaxy Tab S. However the device is not in this list. Might be worth adding for the next version. I'm surprised there was no update in this list prior to it being released.

Well the 5.1.1 update came through about 3 hours ago for the Z3, I think there needs to be some better communication within the Optus team. Either that or Sony is bypassing carriers! 😄

OK so when is the S6 Edge update going to be available, because I am having some serious issues so much so that I am going to possibly bring back the phone and either get a new one or cancel the contract and go else where that are more prompt in these issues.

Very disappointed.

What about the HTC one M8 and Samsung S5.

Are updates for those in the pipeline espcially since Stage fright surfaced?

Why does the latest for the One M8 say 5.0.2? My phone is at 5.0.1 and checking for updates states it's at the latest version: Software version 4.18.980.9

Seems there are a few issues with this list. I don't know what moving it here achieved. It's the exact same page as the old one. Moving it into a blog makes no difference. The list is out of date, as others have said they have devices on later versions of android than listed here, including mine which is an Optus purchased device. It doesn't hold all devices e.g tablets aren't in here.

It needs to be moved onto a main page, containing ALL Optus devices, in a searchable database. Even older devices, at least that way people will know what their device should be on.

Mobile phones and tablets are an important part of your business strategy, spend some time and money on supporting them.

@OGriobhtha 5.0.1 is correct, this article is not.

When do you think you'll get a response back from Samsung RE: critical issue found in 5.1.1 update for Galaxy S6/S6 Edge? From what I heard, a follow-on update for 5.1.1 had been issued by other carriers across the globe recently which included some major bug fixes

This is looking like Optus are very slack or just dont care as other providers have provided their customers with the updates provided by Samsung. Patience is wearing thin. Vodafone and Telstra have better service capabilities. If Optus want to keep customers they need to get a move on.

Excuses dont change reality. And that reality is that the update(s) have taken too long and that is very frustrating for us the Customer!

@Wassim_1 what update are you referring to? I've just looked at 2 other major telco's updates and Optus really aren't behind either of them so would be good if you clarify

I have 2 friends that are with Telstra and Vodafone. And they have each mentioned that they have received the new updates for the S6 Edge phone.

Hi @Wassim_1 what update did you get from telstra and voda?

New Contributor
New Contributor

I didnt say me. I said I have 2 friends that one is with Telstra and the other with Vodafone.

I am still with Optus myself.

So I am going by what they have told me.

@Wassim_1 that's weird because according to Telstra and Voda both haven't received an update. No info at all from Telstra in their last 3 updates and Voda advises "Testing complete, but update withdrawn by Samsung. Expecting new software for testing, but no ETA" on the 5.1 update for S6 Edge (same for standrard S6 to).

What update exactly?

New Contributor

I am just on chat with Telstra now to confirm with them directly and i will do the same with vodafone. I will update asap

New Contributor

Im still waiting on a response. The guy seems to think not, but he is clarifying for me.

My frustration is I have to every 30 miniutes or so have to reboot / turn off my phone as it just freezes.

Can you see why I am frustrated.

@Wassim_1 my edge is with telstra and havent got the update,  just got off the phone with them and theyre clueless 😞

Lol

So why are you on the Optus forum? Smiley Indifferent

New Contributor

At the end of the day whether Telstra do or dont have it and it looks like what you found out and what I am still waiting to find out they Telstra dont have the update yet. I will be discussing with my Telstra friend and my Vodaphone friend even though I havent contacted Vodafone yet what update(s) they are referring too. Optus still doesnt have the update too.

So until then i just want to be kept in the loop with correct up to date info

Fair point @Wassim_1. By the looks of things the information in here is up to date with reference the the S6 and S6 edge. From what a few others have said a few might be slightly out. Hopefully it's not to much longer!

Hi any news on when the Note 4 will get an update to 5.1.1?

Forums Community Manager

@adamhumphrey not yet sorry. Once we have info we put it into our blog posts. If it's not in there, it means we haven't received the update to test yet

One thing I have learnt is that clarity and transparency are 2 key features of trust. I like the discussion that occurred yesterday because in the end, things were cleared up to a certain point and moving forward these will also be clearer for all to understand and accept.

Thank you SamSam  and Nibbles Smiley Happy

@Wassim_1 +1! Transparency is everything and is great to see a quick turn around after some general discussion. I also like we all had a discussion rather than an argument and were able to help each other out! I'd kudo's you but that functionality isn't in this section for some reason....*cough* @Andy @MattJ *cough*

100 Kudos from me to SamSam!

Well done and yes discussion instead of argument is progress and leads to better outcomes for all involved.

The 5.1 update has been out for 5 months now and most 3rd world countries already have it!! Optus ought to be ashamed of itself. Because of carriers the Android update system (especially regarding security ie; "Stagefright") is broken, if only Android had of gone the Apple route and kept you lot (carriers) out of it 😞
Contributor
Contributor

@boxa72 what 5.1 update are you referring to exactly?

Contributor
Contributor
5.1.1 for Galaxy S6 but I didn't know until later that it was Samsung who pulled it n not Optus but what I said about carrier involvement still applies. I'm tipping that Samsung pulled it to include a patch for Stagefright. I am a developer so I do understand the insanity of Google writing code (that compiles perfectly), then Samsung tampering with it and adding runtime exceptions lol then Optus adding their bloat. Is it any wonder that a lot of us are still rooting our phones!
