Android Software Updates – 25/05/2017

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 25/05/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

In relation to my ongoing questions to Optus on no update to my SM-J100Y android, stuck on 4.4, Samsung advise me it is up to both Samsung and Optus to supply updates via Google for this phone. They say their developers have no update yet, but also state "For updates released to carriers, their developers will further enhance and optimise these update to fit their needs, before being released to their customers." So again, may I ask, and no person from Optus seems to want to answer, what are Optus doing to supply an update, especially when newer versions of this phone, now can also be sold with Lollipop included? Is Optus supporting this SM-100Y in any way? Thanks.

Yes I know, but .0.376 is what is being pushed out to Optus Z5's

SONY Z5 updates:......

32.3.A.2.33 was available MARCH

32.3.A.0.376 was available in FEBRUARY

Forums Community Manager

@DylanZ We haven't had any other reports of this issue as a result of the latest update sorry. It'd be best if you head into your local store so they can take a look and if need be, send it away for repair. It'd be best if you back up your phone before doing this as if it's sent away, a full factory reset will be performed and will remove all of your data

@viewer My apologies for the lack of response to your question. The 2016 version of the J1 that we sold (model number SM-J100Y) has only had Android version 4.4.4 tested and approved for use. I've noticed on our device guides page is lists 5.1.1 which is incorrect and I'm having rectified as we speak.

@Jack_gecko I can confirm the build number for the latest update provided to us from Sony was 32.3.A.0.376

@GiriP Apologies but we don't have a revised timeline as yet as we're working through the technical issues with Samsung. I don't have any further information on what the issue was

Member Jack_gecko

@MattJ mate perhaps Optus should contact Sony and get the current update?

Forums Community Manager

@Jack_gecko We're in regular communication with all of the manufacturers that we work however it takes time for them to modify updates for various regions and carriers. If and when Sony supply us with the latest update, we'll be sure to test it as soon as we can.

I tried asking this in the last blog, so....I received a 177mb update for my Galaxy S7 last weekend. But there is no data on this or the last blog, was it a security patch?

Member Jack_gecko
Member

@MattJ  Matt the Kernel and Security patches are both form DECEMBER!!!!!!!

Forums Community Manager

@jaxon That was a minor update that included the secuirty patch for 7.0 as well as some bug fixes for Samsung apps

@Jack_gecko When it comes to updates for Android devices, the only part we play in testing them is to ensure they're compatible with our mobile network. We don't play a part in what's contained within them, we just test the update that's provided to us from the manufacturer.

@MattJ Cheers mate, if only the update got rid of peeking.

anything on p9? the wait has been painful (bordering 3 months since its been released to Australian international version, nonbranded) and there isn't even a confirmation yet that the p9 will receive the nougat update?

What's going on with any Huawei Mate 9 updates. Since getting the phone from Optus I've been stuck on a November 2016 security patch. 😠

RetiredModerator Gen_R

Hey Zyn0 & thebrockmurley- a new blog will be posted when we have updates. We are sorry for the delay.

New Contributor tizza42

What's the "technical problem" with the S6 Nougat update?  Another telco in Oz is deploying the update now, so it's probably not a base Samsung issue.  I'd just like soem more info AND a revised ETA.

Thank you.

You customers are not mushrroms.

Forums Community Manager

@tizza42 at this stage we don't have a revised ETA sorry but we're working with Samsung to get it sorted. At this stage there's no further information other than the update will need to be revised so as to not cause issues for our customers

New Contributor tizza42
New Contributor

@MattJ can you at least shed some light on the nature of the problem?  is it commc related, video related, excessive power use related?  If you are dealing with Samsung to get it sorted, then at least the area that has the problem would provide users with some information...

Forums Community Manager

@tizza42 When we test an update, we're strictly testing it for compatability with our network. Everything else is for the manufacturer to test and fix if required so any delays at this stage of the update process are network related rather then a bug in the app like it causing battery drain, crashing etc.

New Contributor tizza42
New Contributor

@MattJ thanks for your reply.  I realise what I'm about to say is not based on any knowledge of your testing regime, but I would have thought that compatibility with the Optus network would have been picked up much earlier in the testing cycle.  No need to respond, just my thoughts, based in a few decades in IT...

Visitor GiriP
Visitor

@MattJ I would agree with @tizza42. Its June already and no update yet? Samsung as it is has taken close to a year to produce this update and Optus dragging it along is only sending the message to everyone that buy a phone outright and never under a carrier brand or Samsung in the first place. I'm assuming there are plenty of customers like me who keep checking every few hours to see if there has been an update pushed. Can we get an update on whats happening please?

Forums Community Manager

@GiriP I can understand your frustration and appreciate that you, like most people would want access to the latest software however this process was put into place with manufacturers and telco's to reduce the possibility of software updates causing any sort of problem for the user.

The problem we uncovered in the latest update would cause a problem for our customers and as such wouldn't be approved by our team. While this does delay the release, it also means our customers have a better experience.

At this stage there's no further update. Samsung is still working on updating the software to correct the problem. Once we receive the updated version we'll begin testing again and at that point I'll be able to provide an update

Android 7 has been available for S7 Edge since May... but no updates are appearing for my phone. What can I do to get my phone updated?

Moderator Aman_B

Hi @TetraEtc, yes the update was released a while back. Could you please confirm if your handset is a Optus sold handset and also if this is on a contract?

Visitor TetraEtc

Am on a contract from Optus.

Thanks for conforming that @TetraEtc.  May I please request you to tap on handset settings>Update software> and manually update it here. Let us know if this helps.

Does nothing. Says no updates are available. I'm still stuck ok Android 6 though

Hmm...could you please try Settings>About phone> System updates?

The closest to that which is available to me is Settings > About Device > Download Updates Manually. That's where I get "No updates available. Current version xxxxxx" (can get the value later)

New Contributor tizza42

with regard to the Samsung "technical problem" preventing the Nougat update being rolled out to Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/S6 Edge Plus.  Have you asked Samsung for at least an estimate of when they will have this resolved.  Like are we talking days, weeks ot months.  This information would provide me, and others I'm sure, with a basis on which we can make our determination of our smartphone of choice.  Thanking you in anticipation.

@Jax_K After your comment, instead of calling because I don't like calling, I went to the local optus store. They referred me to the Samsung Stall in the shopping centre, and they were able to install the latest updates for me Smiley Happy

Hi Optus Team,

Can someome please let us know why Android 7 hasnt still been rolled out for Samsung Galaxy S6?

Every single mobile provider in Australia has sent the Android 7 update for S6 except Optus!!!

Can you at lease give an ETA so we know what to do?!!!

RetiredModerator AlexRH
RetiredModerator

Hey @mk78, get this is frustrating Smiley Sad As our post mentions, it has been delayed due to technician issues.

Please keep an eye out for our updates as they do become available, we're here if you need a hand with anything else.

New Contributor Missrippa
New Contributor

@AlexRH yes this whole update process is  extremely frustrating for us optus customers.  We ask questions and if we are lucky enough to get a reply all we are told to do is refer to this blog. Thats all well and good but you guys dont give us any information on the blog as its not updated regularly enough. Vodafone sent out the nougat update dor the s6 and variants almost a month ago with no isssue and telstra released it almost 2 weeks ago with no issue. Why is it that us optus customers are being treated with neglect and no respect? We need specific  information and an exact release date. Im sure many of the people who ask questions on here are about to jump ship to another carrier if we continue to be treated like crap

New Contributor tizza42
New Contributor

@Missrippa couldn't agree more. Been saying this for weeks. "Technical problem" is not good enough. What about "delay it long enough and they may but an S8"? That sous now plausible.

New Contributor Missrippa
New Contributor

@tizza42 im not buying an s8 . Wont be buying another samsung at all . Only going to get an unlocked phone.  No more phones on plans .

Visitor GiriP

@tizza42 I agree with you mate. I'm tired of Samsung and android software updates. Ive already moved away from Android couple of days ago. Got an iPhone. You know the feeling of watching new software launches every year and finally getting it within a couple of months does feel much better than waiting for a year or more to receive an old update when you a new ones already come out. Google + Samsung + carrier before you receive an update is ridiculous.

Moderator Aman_B

Totally understand your frustrations with this @Missrippa.  So sorry but there's not much we can confirm other than the technical issue that is causing the delay but rest assure our techs are working on the upgrade and trying to make it available as soon as possible.

New Contributor tizza42

@Aman_B "technical issue" - why do NO OTHER CARRIERS have this problem???

The htc M8 is actually on Android 7 not 6.

Maybe update the table!

So Sorry @tizza42  but we can't comment on that. I can assure you this can be frustrating and our techs are working to get the upgrade available as soon as possible.

@Oshie @Aman_B The HTC One M8 uses the Snapdragon 801 which isn't certified officially for Nougat, so it would in fact be running Android 6 Marshmallow.
