When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 24/08/2015. If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

@Wassim_1 @itsmehuey @boxa72 @Stevenj Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have been approved for 5.1.1 so we're just waiting for Samsung to distribute now Smiley Happy

Excellent news. Thanks for the update @MattJ.

Look forward to when that is the case.

Its a shame that this has happened to such an incredible phone, but it also goes to show we are all vulnerable.

@MattJ great news. thanks for the update!

@Wassim_1 @itsmehuey @boxa72 @Stevenj my apologies, I've just received an update and the original information was incorrect. Whilst we've approved 5.1.1 for the S6 and S6 Edge it does not include a fix for stagefright. We're waiting for Samsung to provide a new build to correct this however in the meantime 5.1.1 should still be distributed

New Contributor Wassim_1

@MattJ so when will Samsung be giving you guys the update with the Stagefright fix and how long will it take to test. Has any of the other carriers got the Stagefright fix? I will be looking to chase this up with Vodafone and Telstra.

Forums Community Manager

I can't comment on other carriers because I actually don't know. Samsung are aware of our want/need for the update but again I can't say when because it's on them but I'd expect it to be soon.

As for how long it takes, as it will be a minor update it should only go through 1 round of testing which generally takes about 2 weeks. We're not expecting it to come with anything other than the security flaw fix which makes it a relatively small update and given what it's for we'll be pushing to get it to customers ASAP so it might not even be 2 weeks.

Keep in mind though that we test it to make sure it doesn't break anything else. If it does, it'll require more work and testing between both us and Samsung so our expectations and the eventual reallity maybe very different. Fingers crossed it's smooth sailing though and the update is out to everyone shortly.

When will they actually start the update?

Thank you now jut to wait for samsung to release it and good to hear it should only take about 2 weeks thanks in advance

Forums Community Manager

@junw which update mate? The SGS6 and SGS6 Edge one? Can't say because we test the update with Samsung but they are the ones to actually distribute. That said, it's never been more then a week or 2 after approval before customers have started to receive it in the past.

How is the Galaxy Note 4 still on 5.0.1? When's 5.1.1 being rolled out or us this another way to ge customers to buy the Galaxy Note 5?

Forums Community Manager

@anthony we haven't received the update to test and approve yet sorry. When we do, we'll put the info in our fortnightly update

Samsung has begun pushing out the 5.1.1 update for S6 and S6 Edge.

The update to 5.1.1 has just started downloading to my phone. Fortunately, sammobile sent me a notification saying it was ready. So I did a software update check and it was there. Thanks.

Got the update earlier this morning for my s6 edge, all installed and apps "optimised"

I've noticed it uses considerably less ram now but there's still some jerking/stuttering with animations but it is better than the previous version.

Because Samsung do staggered role outs I can post my findings for battery life and performance after a bit of use for those that don't have it yet.

Forums Community Manager

Thanks for confirming everyone and thanks @BradChur for the offer. That'd be great as I know I always delay my update so I can see what others think first

hey has there been any news about when note 3 are going to get the update?

Who cares about the S6 where is the update for Note 4, a phone that was out first. Also when is the stagefright fix coming???

Forums Community Manager

Plenty of people care about the S6 and it's updates @adamhumphrey as the above comments would indicate. We haven't received any further updates for the Samsung Note 4 to test as yet however when we do we'll provide the information to all customers through this blog.

As for stagefright, we're working with our various manufacturers and google to get a fix out to as many handsets as we can as soon as we can. As with all Android software updates, we'll use the blog to keep people informed about new information on that as well

The amount of people that keep asking the same questionstove about their device updates, must get sick of it and the fact it's written through out the updates forum haha.

So far the 5.1.1 update isn't much better. I'm still experiencing a lot of slowness, lag and jerky animations.

Very disappointed in samsung with the update and might go back to iphones, first world problems though hey.

@MattJ Finally a reply I posted several questions in the previous update thread, but as usual it was unanswered. Bit of a joke that it seems everytime I buy a new phone from optus, after 6 months of owning it they forget about updates for it and just worry about the newest phones. Pretty crap service in my honest opinion. Guess I will have to wait till the note 5 gets updates before I get one to fix stuff on my phone. Im sure plenty of people are worried about the updates like myself for the Note 4 but are tired of waiting for answers from here.

Forums Community Manager

Sorry @adamhumphrey I thought I'd answered your questions in our previous thread as well. I took a look and can see you did make a comment after I responded however it didn't come across as a question to me. I'll endeavour to respond to all of your posts in the future.

As for the updates on your handset, I posted about the Android updates process here if you'd like to take a look. I explain in there that we need to wait to receive the update from the manufacturer before we can test and approve for them to distribute it. I'll pass your feedback onto our software updates team so they can in turn pass it onto Samsung however I can assure you they're aware of how eager users are for the latest update on their handsets.

This is just ridiculous. High end devices are not getting the latest firmware or we just have to wait for what.... a year or more ???? I'm getting really upset. I think I might act with Samsung the same way they act with us.... I'll just forget about it...

New Contributor Wassim_1

@PALFrAid I agree with you but unfortunatley they are all just as bad as each other. The only way to teach these big organisations a lesson is to show them that without us the customers they are worthless. And that can only be done if we all unite together and give them a tatse of PEOPLE POWER. But unfortunatley that is also hard to do as well because not everyone is willing to act. There are people out there and I am not pointing the finger at anyone specific but they are either too lazy or to scared to say something.

Caution with the 5.1.1 update on S6, updated this morning upon prompt, stock from day one, now stuck in a boot loop, have to goto to store tomorrow to fix.  Funny, never with Optus previous, never on any phone other than nexus one, nexus s and gnex, first non pure phone on cheaper network and this, with stock!!!  Back to Telstra.... sigh.....

*sigh* Off to Twitter to hassle HTC for the One M8 update rollout, guess... 😑

@MattJ The update has sort of been bitter sweet, the battery life is of a muchness really; no real difference to the previous version.

The main thing I've noticed since updating is slightly less ram usage and it seems to manage it better however, the device as said previously still jitters/stutters quite a bit and there is a massive lag when sending messages and also when going into messages the contents of a message with a contact can take some time to dislay as well as the keyboard taking it's time to pop up. The message also can lag and take it's time to be typed out and once you send the message the phone can completely freeze and lag for a few seconds. (This happens throughout the whole phone and I even performed a factory reset with no difference)

All of the issues I'm having were in 5.0.2 and they seem to be just as severe but in some instances some of the problems have been made a bit more passive. It would seem however that Samsung have not really attempted to go for optimisation for this phone with Lollipop or even Touchwiz; it would seem they are leaving that up to Google for the Android M release. If the 5.1.1 rollout in Australia is anything to go by, we will be waiting until late next year to see Android M.

All in all, okay update; didn't fix much and many of the problems are still there making a "top tier" smart phone as about as useful as a cheap one you buy a kid when they nag you for a phone.

@LustStarrr I wouldn't hold your breath. It was supposed to come out in August but new reports say they've scrapped 5.1 altogether for Android Marshmallow with Sense 7. We're probably a good 6-8 months away from another update...

Also it bothers me that the LG G2, G3 and G4 are interrupted by the F70... Smiley Indifferent

Really hoping the Note 4 gets an upgrade soon, especially seeing what Samsung has done to the Note 5, I think I lot of people will be holding onto there 4's.
Contributor adamhumphrey

I wouldnt hold your breath on getting the update yet. The Note 5, S6 and every other phone will get the update before us. Optus will be holding out so people buy the new Note 5. We might see the 5.1.1 Update after Android Marshmellow (6.0) comes out later this year.

So i went and got a note 5 as i found out i was due for a an upgrade and as soon as i got it home it updated to 5.1.1 pretty happy with it

New Contributor Anokin

I got an update as soon as I got my Note 4 too. Glad your happy with your Note 5 but for a lot of us Note users, The Note 5 is very disappointing. Shouldn't even have the Note name imo. adamhumphrey have hope, I have a feeling we should get some news about 5.1.1 by the end of the month. Also a lot of warranties are ending so there's always another route. knock knockx
Contributor adamhumphrey
Contributor

I wouldnt go down that route, @Anokin as I only got the phone in Feb and it has 2 year warranty. I have seen the SM-910F get the update plus countless other countries we are always so far behind. I have had Samsung Phones from The S1, S2, S4 and Note 4 now and the updates havent gotten any better thats why I have no hope. Its always Optus blaming Samsung and vice versa. I still dont know why they cant go down the iphone update path and remove all the carrier bloatware and send the update all the same time.

Contributor AndWhat
Contributor

Didn't know it had a 2 year warranty have to check that out. I've owned the s1 note1 now note4. I've always gone down the custom root and had much fun and freedom doing so but with the note4 it's harder to go down that rou

t if you know what i mean e. So far. This is the only phone I've had where I'm stuck with what optus and samsung gives us. I'm also itching to get the new update at least 5.1.1. Guess all we can do is keep asking and hopefully optus put some pressure on who ever is responsible for releasing the update. Really though wish i could just go down the custom route and not rely on operator ota soft.

Contributor rc211e

Don't fret Anokin (think back to Note 2) 5.1.1 was rolled out to some US Note 4s 3 or 4 weeks ago

http://www.ibtimes.com/android-511-lollipop-update-samsung-galaxy-note-4-rolled-out-2047679

so give Optus a year or so of teasing and then they'll say it's too hard. They sell phone plans not updates.

Contributor AndWhat
Contributor

Lol thats pretty bad. I was on my note 1 with the latest nightly updates. But the Note 4 5.0.1 didn't take that long to come to optus after us carriers had it thats why i think the note 4 update 5.1.1 will be here soon too

One M8 got the Stagefright update today Smiley Happy

Contributor rc211e

danz207 my partner got an update on her One M8 yesterday too but she didnt take much notice of what it was and phone still shows Version 5.0.1. Was yesterday's update purely Stagefright?

Contributor danz207
Contributor

@rc211ee Yep. Purely stage fright. Was only a 44mb update that fixes a Google security problem. Bumps version number up to 4.xx.980.11

Contributor rc211e

@danz207 Thanks for clarifying that, my partner was far more concerned about stagefright than version upgrades so she's a happy camper again

Contributor adamhumphrey
Contributor

I couldnt care about upgraded version either I want the security flaw fixed.

Contributor AndWhat
Contributor
I really care about both the update and security flaw, maybe the 5.1.1 update even more then the security fix. There are major performance issues and bugs with 5.0.1, memory leak, battery drain, etc. The performance of kitkat and battery usage was great compared to 5.0.1.

Does anyone know when the next update for Samsung Note 3 will be released? Since updating to 4.4.2 I can no longer connect to Wifi and battery only lasts a few hours.

Samsung and Optus cant get there act together and get the update for a phone thats just a year old (note 4) so good luck with the note 3.
