Android Software Updates - 24/05/2018

Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of  25/05/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Wait, so the S6 is getting 7.1 and Samsung Experience 8.5? If that's true, I'm hyped

Gah, I'm sorry @CloudedFlower42

I've had to go in and edit that one. The 7.1.1 update is for the Galaxy J2 pro.

We're still at 7.0 for the GS6 range at this stage.

Sadly, it's still no info for S7 Oreo update.

Just read the news saying the Korea is getting Oreo update.

Still no news about the mate 10 Pro, that's not cool.

Massive update for my A5 - around 2 gig in size. Can't wait to see what's new when it finally finishes downloading...

Is the z5 premium ever going to get 7.1.1

@Itsmoe Sorry we haven't received any information about the Mate 10 Pro yet. We'll let you know as soon as we get an update.

@DCCC At this stage it's not something we've started testing I'm afraid.

I don't think I'll ever buy a Samsung again.  I got the $1249 S7 Edge and it's still stuck on 7.0. I recently got a new plan with the $379 Oppo A73 and already it's on 7.1.1.

Even the $500 Samsung A5 has 8.0, what's the point of buying flagship phones when companies like Samsung refuse to update them once a newer model comes out?

Think I'll stick with cheap phones in future. .

It's all Optus fault. I have installed the unbranded rom on mine and I have been updated to Oreo over 2 months ago.

Install the global rom and you'll be good to go. All these testing these guys do are useless as I've never had any issues running the global rom.

Itsmoe, do I need to wipe my phone when flashing OREO firmware with UK region code? Or can I just flash on top with ODIN as usual and will boot without issues?

Itsmoe

It will wipe your phone clean, it's best that you back up everything.

Will backup just in case. I'll try flashing without wipe and see if it boots and is stable, otherwise I'll wipe if needed. Smiley Happy

If you'll be using Odin, it will wipe the phone clean dude. I'm not sure if there are any other ways to flash a stock rom. Just do a back up either way Smiley Happy

Itsmoe, the sad thing is... the s7 edge isnt even being tested! And yes, it's all Optus' fault, I don't get why theyre not prioritising s7/e over the A5. Just do it already.

I know man. Now I have the mate 10 Pro and still stuck on decemDec update when there has been 3 updates since and Optus is not looking into it. I might flash my phone to unbranded it for quicker updates. It's ridiculous.

Partner and myself both have Mate 10 Pro hers updated system to BLA-L09 8.0.0.134 mine is still stuck on BLA-L09 8.0.0.128 both on Optus same plans etc. Why would this be?

Really? That's weird. I tried to use this software to push the updates through but I was unable to. It's interesting to see what Optus has to say if they ever say anything useful.

@ThxXtc @Itsmoe I and a colleague (sitting behind me) both have the mate 10 pro on optus and mine is 8.0.0.128 and his is 8.0.0.134. I have read that Huawei is doing a staged release worldwide so I can only surmise that there is an exploit that has pushed them to make sure everyone receives that update instead of waiting for carriers to test their own flavour complete with bloatware for Huawei to package up and make available.

I'm fairly sure that an optus representative can confirm that while carrier package releases are the norm but in exceptional circumstances the phone manufacturer can push out the update without having to wait for a carrier request/approval process.

Itsmoe

I still believe Optus has something to do with it as the update was initially released by Huawei back in Feb and I'm sure it won't take 4 months to get through to us if it wasn't Optus who's not authorising it.

I even checked on Frimware Finder and there are a few updates since the December update I have and I'm unable to to install any of them as it says update has not been approved or authorised.

The fact that the boot up screen is Yes Optus, all updates have to be approved by Optus I believe. I could be wrong as I'm new to Optus but Vodafone whom I was with for over 10 years had to approve every update and that also was a lengthy process, they drain it pretty much.

@Itsmoe I would think the same, that it takes a request from Optus or the device manufacturer is notifying them of a release. That said, why then is there nothing in the above section for the mate 10 pro? Either there has been a communication breakdown between teams or the information was omitted accidentally (or deliberately).

Either way there's an update that can't be too far away. You could possibly load the stock EMUI 8 image sans the optus "enhancements" but you might brick your phone in the process. It would be nice to see updates faster, especially considering the potential risks in not having up to date security.

@bigblue yeh this is what's confusing me, either the Optus team who handle this forum are unaware of what's going on or the software team aren't interested in finding out what the situation is or its like you said, maybe this update doesn't need an approval and should've pushed through but then again why is it taking so damn long!! Ahhh!!

I should have opted for the pixel 2 xl instead of this phone tbh but it's too late mow Smiley Sad. Even my Xiaomi Mi A1 has the may security update and that phone cost me $200 while as this phone doesn't. It's unreal but let's just wait and see.

I just checked XDA forums, people with the unbranded Australian Mate 10 Pro have recieved the latest update, it comes with may security patch and other things.

This is all on Optus at this point.

I know Optus has something to do with it @Whelp888 I'll have to see if I can get the unbranded rom on mine tonight or tomorrow, I'll keep you guys updated.

@Itsmoe With Odin it depends on how you flash the Samsung stock rom / firmware. If flashed with home_csc it does not wipe but with non_home CSC it will wipe data in case anyone else wanted to know with flashing on Samsung S7 or newer .

@Benjamen50 that's good to know dude as I've only had to do it a couple of times and I thought it would run better with a full flash but I guess some people don't want to bother going through the whole setup again.

Cheers man.

Mate 10 pro update ( 8.0.0.134) downloaded to my phone around 5pm (01/06). Wasn't expecting it, and unsure whether it was Optus or Huawei? Anyhoo... thanks to whoever it was.

Great to hear@Null_Terra, the update was deployed on the 23/05/18.

Once completed, the updates are rolled out progressively over a short period.

@Dan_C thanks for clarifying the update information. Not shooting the messenger, but how was this information omitted from the android software updates pages for the entire time it was going through the QA process?
