Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 22/11/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

I have the Xperia Z5 Premium. I last updated it in July 2017 with 7.0. Current version is 7.1, but it appears Optus has forgotten about this phone. My contract ends in March, but Optus won't let me upgrade to the Pixel 3 to take advantage of Google's updates, instead making me pay out an obsolete product .

Hi @ natjen09 - Apologies for any inconvenience caused. With regards to the next available firmware update, we have to wait for the manufacturer to send us the software upgrade so that we can test it and at this point we are still waiting for it. Please click here for the process.

"Some carriers may choose not to... update"

I'll eat my hat if you're still working on the update 18 months later. This link, from Sony themselves, seems to suggest they have distributed the update to carriers. So, I'd rather Optus was honest, and admitted that it's not going to update the phone.

Hi @ natjen09 - Apologies again but we do update any updates and as soon as we receive them form the manufacturer.

Yeah that'll happen when you sign a 24mth contract they tend to hold you to it.

Appreciate you trying to get out a contract, was going to try too, but wont bother. My phone htc u11 has had only 1 update since I purchased it. Its now on nov 17 security level. It is shame companies dont get held to account on this. Its probably more of htc issue than optus.

What about adding the Huawei mate 20 Pro to the list.

I've got a galaxy s8. When will my phone actually receive the update as I'm still waiting??? I can see the next update says complete but I've checked every day since this last update was posted. Thanks.

Still no listings for the Huawei mate 20 Pro, I'm seeing reports in xda developers that novNovem patch has hit many countries already, with lots of fixes for known bugs and improvements.

Come on Optus, pull your finger out.

And especially after the problems the Mate 20 had at launch don't also keep us waiting for updates

Also why is a device that on Android 4.4 on the list .. surely no one is coming to look up to see if it'll be updated

To indicate how critical this is I just unlocked my phone with my left index finger. This is strange because only my right thumb is registered in the phone.

The latest firmware version includes Camera improvement, facial recognition improvement, Fingerprint improvement, bug fixes and November security update.

Obviously for security reasons we need this update to prevent anyone using an unregistered fingerprint to unlock the phone.

Is there actually any Optus representatives in YesCrowd, because there's no response from them. Why are you avoiding the issue.

WHAT THE HECK IS OPTUS DOING?

Seems like every carrier around the world can push out an update, it's just all too difficult for Optus.

I just got off a tech support chat with a so-called Optus technical support person who referred me to a Google search that led to a page on Optus Crowd Support for Android updates. They could not answer a straight up question on when my Huawei Mate 10 Pro will move from Android 8.0 to 9.x. When I returned to the chat, it had been dropped.

My phone is only 13 months old!!! Come on Optus... Where is the support or my phone?

Please don't have your staff hide behind this out-of-date list when questioned about software updates.

That's what they do, hide behind the list, I contacted Facebook Messenger Optus team who just gave me this link which I already have. I said no point because you don't even have the Mate 20 Pro on the list.

Yet they have the pixel 3 ...eerm that's a Google phone Optus they get their update from Google direct. And Google ain't slackers like Optus.

Xalies

I kinda regret this replacement Mate 20 Pro didn't get the green screen issue otherwise I'd have a Pixel 3 XL ... Not because of the hardware and if I had a non Optus M20P it'd be fine but I think since this phone probably wasn't a big mover in their sales then the updates gets further pushed back

This list is supposed to be updated every 2 weeks as mentioned by Optus themselves. Today is 2 weeks since the 22/11/2018 page update.

Huawei have advised they have sent Optus their software updates but this doesn't show on the list.

The Huawei technologies support person said today...

"Our updates are sent to Providers for alteration and checking to ensure that no compatibility issues would arise from the update we provide.
In short, they will tinker with it before distributing it to our products under their network."

Let's see what changes Optus makes to this list today, especially adding the 'Huawei Mate 20 Pro' and, for me, a software update for the 'Huawei Mate 10 Pro' to show if Optus is genuine regarding their responsibility to support THEIR customers mobile devices.

I know that the Optus representatives have been online and have probably seen this chat, yet they still ignore it without an answer. Goes to show the professionalism.

About time we had an answer.

If you ask me, any mobile phone Optus/Telstra/Vodafone sells you on a 24 month plan, should include updates for the length of the contract as part of it's Terms of Service.
Dazkatmaka11
by Regular Contributor
‎2018-12-06 03:28 PM

@Optus

Yes as Nahaz said you should have this as a monthly inclusion in a contract. Google at least support android updates for 24 months on every handset released.

You should also provide 24 months service for customers, with any technical issues.

Interesting how there's no response to this thread. Shows immaturity by your representatives.

Voltron
by Occasional Contributor Voltron
‎2018-12-06 03:52 PM

Vodafone update their software list every week. Optus can only do it every 2 weeks. That says a lot about the effort Optus apply to performing this task for their customers.

https://www.vodafone.com.au/support/device/software-updates

Optus give us this 'Yes Crowd' function to communicate with them and others for support issues but does make a 'rod for its own back's by not responding to genuine and valid complaints about their service. We are seeing an example of this right now with the 'silence' from Optus moderators. Too hard is it Optus?

If there is no movement soon on this matter of Android Software Updates then I recommend registering a complaint to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) to force them to support their customers with timely software updates.

Dazkatmaka11
by Regular Contributor
‎2018-12-06 04:23 PM

I ain't waiting anxiously any longer, since the latest firmware 9.0 0.146 has security updates for the fingerprint reader and Face detection feature to enhance security, this should have been an urgent matter.

TIO complaint has been lodged, Optus representatives have had plenty of time to initiate a response. Your time just ran out.

I Guess the CEO isn't going to be happy @Optus @Dan_C he stated last month customers are the heart of the business, anyone disrespectful to the customer will be sacked. Maybe he should start with the Yescrowd representatives and the software team. Because you are useless as a chocolate fireguard.

More and more people are receiving 9.0.0.146 update. Which fixes a lot of issues and enhanced fingerprint / Face unlock security. Camera and video improvements.

Optus are the only company dragging it's feet and screwing over its customers.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has received your complaint.

We have asked the service provider to contact you and try to resolve the complaint with you by 5pm on 21 December 2018.

Thanks for waiting, Darren! We would like to first apologise to you as there is no Beta-User registration program for the upcoming updates for our Mate 20 Pro model for the moment and instead would encourage you to stay tuned for the next batch update of 9.0.0.126 as Optus is currently testing on their Software Development team's end for releasing.

The new software testing report is due tomorrow.

We'll see if there's been an update then.

Regarding  the Samsung TAB S4

Galaxy Tab S4 is open market version. There will be no updates for Optus. Samsung updates will be for all open market customers and we do not need to test unless the changes are significant.

Look like we're relying on Samsung Aus for the update.
