Android Software Updates - 22/03/2018

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of  22/03/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

About that Note 8 upgrade thats currently live....someday...

Major drawback of buying a carrier supplied phone - having to wait weeks or months after non branded releases.

Obviously, the faster we can deploy the update the better, but there was less than a 2-week gap between the re-release of the Samsung S8 and S8+ 8.0 Manufacturer build and our carrier update (which isn't so bad).

I don't have an update for the 8.0 release for the Note 8, but as soon as we get something, we'll be sure to update the blog J

Since the S8 is now getting Oreo does this mean the S7/S7 Edge will be next?

Hey should i be concerned by not getting the update on my s8+ yet. Seems other people have and i havent yet recived the update?

RetiredModerator Toomey

@Mayooonaise Roll out dates for Oreo on the S7/Edge is yet to be confirmed I'm afraid.

@Dazza1977 Continue to check Settings > Software Update and it should appear for you to manually install

I’ve got a outright s8 plus with Optus sim. Has anyone received an update for outright s8 plus yet? Seems to be different release dates for locked phones and outright phones!

It depends where you'd purchased the handset from. Was it purchased from another carrier or directly through Samsung?

Handsets purchased directly from the manufacturer or retail store should be the first to receive the new update.

Is there any carrier branding visible on the phones user interface?

Frequent Visitor Dazza1977

Hi Dan C, the phone was purchased from Harvey Norman at an outright price. Sim card is optus post paid. No branding visable on user interface. Please assist if possible. Totally unlocked.

Try http://www.imei.info/. Enter your IMEI number and it should let you know whether you have a carrier variant.

Non-carrier variants are the amongst the first handsets to receive the update.

Hmm, loads of info on that site, good one Dan. Still no update for my phone though so I will go and back up my dvd collections while I wait (this should take a while!!)

@Dazza1977, funnily, unlocked Australian version hasn't received update yet according to SamMobile site:

https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s8/SM-G950F/XSA/

XSA variant is the open variant sold by Harvey Norman. Strange how carrier versions are getting the upgrade first...

Any news on galaxy s7 android 8.0?

@savage01Looks like Android 8 for S7 is still under development:

Oreo is out for XSA variant s8 plus. Apparently Optus has nothing to do with unlocked phones and the update comes direct from Samsung!

Is there any information or update as to when the Note 8 will be getting Oreo 8?? My wife's S8 has been updated last week.

It seems that we will not get the Android 8 to Note8 update on this long holiday. feeling bad 😑. I wish the update arrived faster in future.

Yep, seeing other note 8 users get their update and those with carrier braanded devices waiting for who knows how long as its not on the list yet is pretty bad.

The update improves battery life of the note 8 and adds a heap of new features like edge alerts etc

Hey guys, I just wanted to jump in and let you guys know where we're at with 8.0 for the Note 8.

I can confirm that we're at the final stages of testing. The update should start rolling out within the next fortnight.

We'll include more info on next week’s blog Smiley Happy

Great to hear @Kab63. Thanks for the update!

Is there a security update for Samsung Galaxy S5 for the KRACK patch?

Does anyone else find their S8 buggy or seems to lag, apps not open properly etc after the Oreo update? Both my friend and I are having usability problems, just doesnt seeem to flow as well as Android 7 did.

Does Optus independently decide on whether to upgrade a handset or does it always follow the manufacturer?  Samsung US social media has indicated an upgrade to Samsung s7/edge from Nougat or Oreo.

So if the answer to the question is the latter, then there is hope that reluctant s7/edge owners forced to downgrade from Note 7 (without any $99 upgrade option) will have a new lease on the phone's life WHEN s7/edge enjoys the Android 8.0 upgrade + Samsung Experience 9.0 update.

I believe it's two major updates per flagship device.

You're right, Samsung has indicated they'll be releasing 8.0 for the S7 range and I believe we'll be following suite.

As soon we have more info, we'll be sure to update the blog.

I am stuck and don't know what to do exactly. My handset is a Mate 9, unlocked. By the IMEI, it says "Taiwan region". Whenever I talk to a tep at Huawei, they each come up with different stories but generally agree that I am NOT going to get an update?? No security for a current handset still in warranty and within the 2 year firmware update window??

They suggest I go to Taiwan and get a sim there to update??

How the hell do I do that?

Anyone have an idea what I can do to force an update? (Phone reports noe available)
