Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 21/12/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Hey guys, silly question but with the mate 10 pro update to Android 9. Wouldn't the build number be 9.0.0.... Instead of 8? Also no estimated release time included in this post. Sorry to nitpick

Hmm, there may have been a typo on the original device testing report we received.

The stock Mate 10 Pro 9.0 build is showing as 9.0.0.108

Hey @Dan_C is there a VoWifi/VoLTE update coming for the Pixel 3 XL as well, and when it does will it be a carrier specific ROM from Google's firmware page requiring a new flash or it will it come through standard OTA updates?

If it is a carrier specific ROM will it still receive the monthly security updates on the 5th/10th of every month or will those be somewhat delayed?

Thanks!

What happens to phones not on this list and not sold through Optus? IE if I'm on a BYOD plan?

Dan_C

For stock handsets (purchased directly from the manufacture with stock firmware, updates are pushed out directly from them.

You should be able to head to the manufactures website to find out more info.

@autMia, It's definitely on its way. I expect that we'll see WiFI calling rolled out in the new year.

@Dan_C can you please correct the Pixel information you posted.

For Pixel 3 & 3 XL, VoLTE on Optus is already available since launch.

Efforts are ongoing to bring VoWifi (WiFi Calling) and EVS likely in February software release.

This is not an Optus specific varient of software.

Current software should be 9.0 December Security Release.

Monthly security releases will continue as normal - staggered release commence first Monday of the month.

All software updates will be delivered over-the-air, no image flashing will be needed.

Hmm, that advice conflicts with what I've given. there's been several threads created by customers who've complained about the lack of functionality.

I've received nothing from our testing team to confirm that it's now been enabled.

We had an official notice come up on our internal communication board stating the same only two weeks ago.

We're working with Google to enable the feature.

If you've purchased a Pixel from Optus, could you send us a PM with a screen shot of the feature enabled? Otherwise, as you've mentioned - security updates etc are pushed out by Google.

Edit* VolTE is available on the Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL

Thanks @Pixel101 for the confirmation.

@Dan_C, thanks for the update info for the Mate 20. There's mention of VoWiFi which is great, but I'm interested to know whether VoLTE is ever planned to be on the cards? It's definitely something lacking for a premium phone on the Optus network.

I guess that's the trade off between buying an outright stock version of the handset vs carrier supplied. We're dealing with an additional round of testing as well as reliance on the manufacturer to send us new updates for testing.

@Dan_C Regardless of Outright v Carrier Supplied,  people have still updated their firmware version without any having any neywnet issues with calls or data. So it still points to the fact just what extensive testing is required. Obviously not much.

Hi guys, Ive been told from two sources inside Optus that they are basically being forced to stop supporting Huawei products by bringing all updates and support work to a standstill. This is due to all Huawei ban/Chinese vs Australia government news in the mail. The vodafone ceo even said all products would be phased out asap. I'd advise you all to keep the pressure on TIO and Optus support and aim for mass refunds due to unsupported products.

Dazkatmaka11

If they are going to stop supporting Huawei product updates, they should release the unbranded firmware version and let Huawei support future updates.

SteveV
by Contributor SteveV

@Dazkatmaka11 is correct if support for huawei is ceasing then notice should be given to huawei to push all updates to customers unbranded. That being said this then would in my opinion create an open ended loop in regards to warranty claims based upon customer perceived and carrier claimed network performance issues. The resolution being if optus is to cease support of the brand then a cut off point e.g. Mate 20 pro. Mate p20 etc somewhere or time frame like sept 2018 onward customers should be offered a direct replacement or fees waived and handset returned recontract. Or the option to accept responsibility for software and warranty on hardware only remains.

Dazkatmaka11
by Frequent Contributor
‎2019-01-01 08:03 PM

I guess that your extensive testing will guarantee us warranty from battery performance problems.

The Nexus 6P I had under contract with optus was unbranded and received updates from Google directly, however there was the issue which many many people including myself encountered updates caused battery degradation.

But we're ok because you have extensively tested all this right?

SteveV
by Contributor SteveV
‎2019-01-02 09:50 AM

Unsure who you're referring to in regards to testing @Dazkatmaka11 I have no affiliation with any carriers. I'm just a tech enthusiast with a law background. I'm actually in agreeance with you should the rumour of the carriers ceasing support prove true the carriers should in turn essentially unbrand our handsets or offer replacement with an equivalent supported handset.

Dazkatmaka11
by Frequent Contributor
‎2019-01-02 10:04 AM

I'm refferire to Optus, if they say that they do extensive testing then this would cover any issues like software updates causing serious battery performance.

Like with the Nexus 6P, I was getting close to 7 hours SOT, after the third update it dropped to at best 4.5 hours. There was a huge number of people complaining which was reported by android authority, android police and GSMarena.

So the extensive testing will guarantee us that any software issues cause battery performance problems we will be covered by warranty. After all they are the ones adiment on doing this so called testing.

@Pixel101 @Dan_C I'm unable to get VoLTE to work on my Pixel 3 XL (and many other people seem to be unable to as well based on forums), how did you get it to work?

I'm switched to 3G when making a call and simply get a "Call Ended" screen if I force LTE Only.

Don't see any option in settings either (which I think is expected when it's working properly) https://imgur.com/a/56GnqQn

Optus need to start preparing either 9.0.0.166 or 9.0.0.171 Mate 20 Pro urgent rollout.

In bad need of system stability, having loading issues with Google News, Google opinion rewards, Google music, Optus sports, apkmirror, music player, Huawei video, 10play, 7now all having random loading issues sometimes they work other times you have to clean phone, optimise battery, use the phone manager and clean Cache or reboot.

People on latest firmware version are not experiencing any of these issues.

@autMia definitely ring up or visit Optus to review your account. I had VoLTE problems myself where it just flat out wouldn't work yet everyone else on Optus with the same phone could. For reasons beyond me and the rep in store, my VoLTE service was disabled hence them checking a box was all I needed. All works perfectly now. Hope you have a similarly simple problem.

https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_mate_20_pro_receives_an_update_camera_and_face_unlock_improved-news-... emu 9.0.0.171 maybe carriers should just drop the customisation of the packages and push the update out. We’re already two months behind on security patches because of “testing”

@DanC Any idea or updates regarding Mate 10 pro I'm still on August Security updates which is really unacceptable. Also any news regarding the possibility of ongoing support for Huawei phones going forward? Could you explain the benefits for Optus for branding their phones, seems to me as a result it creates more problems with testing etc.

@Optus @Dan_C Is someone going to clarify what they are doing in regards to Huawei Products? Are you continuing support or not?

When are we going to receive the latest 9.0.0.171 firmware updates with December Security Patches. Considering we are still on October .The mate 9 has November at least, and januJan 2019 is due in a few days.

Let's not forget that 9.0.0.166 was released weeks ago with system stability updates which we are in critical need of.

You should just release the unbranded firmware, people who have bought their handset outright have the latest version and are using the optus network without any issues. So really there's no testing requirements needed.

Unbranding post paid handsets would be an excellent selling point for optus and would stop the issue of delays. I can understand the branding on pre paid phones with network lock and the such.
