Android Software Updates – 20/04/2017

Online Community Manager

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 20/04/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Why has the rest of the world recieved the update to 7.0 on the Huawei P9 but we have not recieved anything ? Not even an update?

Why have my 5 x bookmarks to my 5 x favourite web sites dissappeared since the 16/2/17 & 29/3/17 s/w u/g's were applied, AND how may I reinstate these bookmarks ? ?

@TheFuzz that's probably more of a question for Huawei then Optus as it's up to them which region they release an update to and when. Optus will simply advise they haven't received it to start testing yet

@hec6236 You haven't mentioned what phone you have so that'll be a good start along with which browser you're using. That said though, chances are your book marks are gone unless you're using chrome and the update simply logged you out or something but I'm doubtful of that

I have a Galaxy S4 i9507, purchased 02/2015, and using M S Internet Explorer. Is Chrome easier and/or better ??  At age 81 I am reluctant to start another 'learning curve'

Hmmm unfortunately I think you bookmarks will be gone but your best bet would be to walk into a store and ask them to take a look. Much easier to talk to someone in person and have them show you what they do then it would be over here.

When it comes to browsers, I find chrome the best but really it comes down to personal preference. I use chrome on my computer at home and work, on my iPad and on my phones and as long as I'm logged in, my data is shared across everything (things like your bookmarks) so it's really convenient for me. It's also quite an easy browser to get used to but again, it comes down to preference and if you're used to one thing then it might be a little harder to wrap your head around purely from a habbit point of view

Hi @TheFuzz, android updates are released after we've tested the. But first we have to wait for the upgrades to be made available by Huawei. You can track the updates here → https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Android-Software-Updates-20-04-2017/bc-p/208249#M8430

Hey I'm just wondering when the Android 7.0 update will be out for the Galaxy S6 (SM-920I)?

My friend in Melbourne who owns an S6 have updated his device to Android 7.0, so why aren't we getting an update here?

Respected Contributor
Respected Contributor

@LilHoo Any chance your friend bought their phone outright rather from Optus? Most people don't realise but Optus only plays a part in the software updates process for the phones they sell. If you buy you're phone from another telco or an electronics dealer like JB and then put an Optus SIM in it, Optus still plays no part.

Optus haven't mentioned a 7.0 upgrade for the S6 I don't think so I'm guessing your friends phone isn't an Optus one or he's installed custom firmware on it

Optus why hasn't the Z5 premium received the 7.0 update? Sony mobile Australia has released the software.

 So I'm thinking:

1. If I unlock my phone, will I receive the update?

2. Also, if my plan finishes, am I still with Optus or is my phone basically like as if I bought it outright?

Respected Contributor
Respected Contributor

@LilHoo

1. Not really sure what you mean by unlock the phone? No post paid phones are sold network locked to Optus so don't worry about that. If you mean you want to install a custom firmware onto your device (as in root it) then you'd probably install the latest firmware that you like which would be 7.0 or higher. I think after that it's a manual process to keep updating and it's also important to note it would void your warranty so be careful. Do lots of research!

2. When your plan finishes, you still have Optus firmware on your phone so you will still receive the updates only once Optus has approved them and Samsung distributes them, same as happens now.

@SamSam

Do you know when Optus us going to test or distribute Android 7? (for the S6, that is)

Respected Contributor
Respected Contributor

No sorry. Samsung have to give it to them first, then they test which takes a couple of weeks if it all goes smoothly and then it's back to Samsung to send out to the phones. According to the info above, Samsung haven't given them the update yet

That's insane! Android 8.0 is announced and the S6 still hasn't got the 7.0 update yet

Respected Contributor
Respected Contributor

Announced, not released. The release will be months away. But this is the way the Android ecosystem works. If you want updates that aren't tested by telcos to make sure they work on their network and are released for all devices at the same time, go to Apple. That's just the way it is unfortunately

Telstra also has pushed the Z5 7.0 update, my little brother has a telstra Z5 and had 7.0 for what seems like a month now

getting frustrated that optus hasnt given an update on the progress.

Hi all, the above list is updated as soon as we receive the update for testing. If it's not listed we have not received it yet from the manufacturer.

So I guess it's time Optus took a look in the top draw for the Sony update as it's clearly been missed. As I recall someone posted that Sony told them it had already been sent to Optus, now you can't go on hear say but if the other cariers have released it then I suspect it was sent to Optus for review so once again time to look artound the Optus office and see which crack it has fallen into, or better yet give Sony a call and ask them why you don't have the update yet when everyone one else has released it to their customers.

Plus the Sony z5 premium,  Is on  6.0.1 not version  6.0, I did call Sony earlier today, they have sent the update out,  it's up to optus too finally test and release it,

I'd like to know what the delay is with the P9 update. Australia non branded P9s have been getting the update since early Feb. Although if I had money to waste I'd throw the P9 in the bin. Great hardware ruined by EMui.

I seriously don't see why optus needs to brand phones in a way that makes many people miss updates. Sure put useful apps on new phones but don't add anymore unnecessary bloatware.

New Contributor
New Contributor

So the Huawei P9 for some reason is not getting an update, even when android 7.0 is available for it when you don't use an optus version?!

New Contributor
New Contributor

Optus is really starting to let all their customers down who are using Huawei phones.  Huawei are one of the best manufacturers for releasing firmware/security updates OTA for their phones.  Why can't we just update our phones directly from the manufacturer?  Optus is basically ruining what should be a fantastic experience.

For my part I'm using a Huawei Mate 9 which is stuck on the B122 firmware despite all other Mate 9's being on at least B182.  Further to that, there have been multiple firmwares released OTA in between, none of which have been released by Optus which provide signficant camera improvements, battery optimisation improvements and security fixes.  When can we expect Optus to push out these updates??

Optus please try and KEEP sony customers, the Nougat update was re-released early Feb OTA

+1 for the P9

This is getting ridiculous. Why does the optus version need to be treated different to the unbranded Aust version? I can right now go and buy the unbranded Aust vresion and it would work fine on the Optus network.

Next time my phone is due for renewal this is exactly what I will be doing.

I was wondering how to enable wifi calling on a samsung s7 edge. The phone is not an optus supplied device, but has VOLTE activated and operating and the phone is on a post paid plan.

I have had a look at the settings menu and there is no wifi calling sub menu  - the menu tree goes wifi then bluetooth.

Do I need to request wifi calling be added to the account?

I tried to load the wifi talk app onto the phone and the app store says that the device isnt compatible with the talk app, so wifi calling is the only option

Any advice most appreciated!

Hi @Lxndr, I've replied to your other post.

Hi @TheFuzz, @Jack_gecko  @thesoxman, apologies for the hassle. Manufacturer release the new version of Android for unbranded handsets before making it available to service providers. Basically the delay is because Optus branded handsets require a different variant. I hope this info. will help understand the delay. Once again apologies for the delay.

Hi @tinkerer, have you checked WiFi calling under connections? Once you tap on Connections the second option is WiFi calling.  Please let us know if this helps.

New Contributor
New Contributor

@Aman_B I think you've missed the point!  The only reason the Optus branded handset requires a different varient is because you guys specify this in order to add your crappy bloatware/branding to the phone.  Physically the unbranded/branded phones are identical.  If I were to install the unbranded firmware on my phone the only difference would be no Optus splash logo at boot and no MyOptus app preinstalled which makes this even more frustrating as your customesr are missing out on great firmware updates ONLY because Optus wnats to put their branding in the phone software.

Hey @thesoxman, can understand the delay can be frustrating. Please feel free to check for software upgrades here → https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Android-Software-Updates-20-04-2017/ba-p/208070 .

Hi Aman, Thanks for the response. I have the latest version of the phone firmware and there is no wifi calling option in connections - VoLTE is on as you can see in the banner at the top of the screen - and this only became active with the latest software upgrade. Been through every menu I can think of and cant find anything to do with wifi calling. Checked on the samsung website and cant find any references - this is a factory original phone not an optus supplied phone so no optus wrapping over the top of android.

@tinkerer if you have an eligible device it should be available in Settings. Have yu run through the setup guide here?→

Thanks Scott, So my device isnt eligible for wifi calling because it was not purchased from optus (it is a S7 edge)  but because it is a s7 edge it cannot load the wifi talk app, which is the only other option to support use of the device in an area of pretty ropey optus cell service. Any ideas whether non optus provided devices will be able to support wifi calling?

Valued Contributor
Valued Contributor

@tinkerer, I see. and my apologies,my assumption was you had an Optus supplied S7. External devices are currently not supported, but we are always looking at ways to improve the availability of our products and services. I'll mark this as feedback for developers in any case. Are you on a plan with us or on a month to month arrangement?

New Contributor

Thanks Scott, i am on a plan. I thought initially VoLTE was only available on optus supplied phones, so things change i guess.

Would Optus provide OTA updates for LG G6, even though they do no stock the phone?

It does not appear in the latest update schedule.

I posted in the main yes crowd area re a problem, and now they tell me to come hear to look for updates, but they have not really helped solve my issue at all. https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Android/Optus-Samsung-Galaxy-J1/m-p/209102#M4940/jump-to/first-unre... This was the text: Hi, I have this phone, and have been searching for an android update from 4.4.4 I found this page, that indicated that Optus J1 is able to run android 5.1.1 http://devicehelp.optus.com.au/samsung/galaxy-j1-2016-android-5-1-1/ My phone does not show this update available, and recently did an update, but the android version did not change. It now indicates these details After it did it's thing and reset, I was disappointed to see it was still on Android V 4.4.4 The only thing I can see is changed, is it was Baseband version J100YDXUOAOC1, and it now shows as Baseband version J100YDXUOAQB1 Security patch 2017-02-01 Kernel version 3.14.0-1182273 dpi@SWDD5703 #1 Mon Feb 20 16:09:50 KST 2017 Can someone advise me how I can update it, as many applications that I want to use (eg Android Auto on my new car won't work on 4.4.4, only Lollipop and above works) won't work with 4.4.4. I looked at a friends J1 which is unlocked, and his is now at lollipop. can someone here or at Samsung help me fix this, as so far, my Optus shop, Opus facebook site, or the Samsung Smart Switch application cannot find it for me. Thank you . Is there a reason Optus cannot sell one J1 now that has lollipop on it, but they cannot update an existing one on 4.4 version? It would seem it would be easy to do....what can I do, other than buy the exact same phones at the Optus shop that gives you lollipop now. The phones are identical?
