When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 19/10/2015. If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

Are you guys sure the update for the s6 is only a security update? Vodafone has just releasd a new version for 5.1.1 with new features such as battery optimisation for apps and new icons.

@manmoths There are also some small imrpovements however this is a minor update primarily focussing on a security update

@savage01 The last update we had the S5 was a security update to protect against Stagefright which we have approved for Samsung to distribute. No news on anything further at this stage

So the S5 update (stagefright) is still coming? Just waiting for samsung?

Apologies, I'm with you now @savage01. We approved the stagefright fix so yes, if you haven't received it yet it'd be up to Samsung to distribute.

Optus have to be the worst Telco in the world for Android updates. Well over a year now since Lollipop was released, and we are nowhere near getting it, we didn't even get Kit-Kat 4.4.4, just the bug ridden 4.4.2. So now Marshmallow is being rolled out, I bet we won't see that until 2017, if ever.

based on what @BillyCraven? Which handset do they supply and are behind on an update compared any of the other big 3? Are you aware of how the update process works? Ever considered maybe the manufacturers prioritise regions differently and that might be the cause for us being behind the rest of the world?

I can say with confidence that in recent times, Optus is generally on par with the other 2 big telcos in Aus when it comes to updates if not in front on some occasions.

The note 3 update 4.4.2 is a remarkable update.

When will the s5 stagefright fix be distributed?? Still nothing on my wifes device which I check every few days for an update.

Also my HTC one m8 was patched now comes up as vunerable, any word for an update to stagefright 2.0.

Bit of a joke if you ask me the amount of time it takes to get a important update when google has released it months ago.

The reason we wait so long is because Optus insists on loading their phones up with bloatware that nobody needs, Nexus phones, made for Google, get instant updates. It's about time Optus made their bloatware optional, especially for us Virginmobile customers who are given Optus phones.

Still waiting for Samsung Pay for S6 Edge while rest of the world are already using it......

Hey BillyCraven! Although it is the case we do brand the software, we also run tests on the firmware to make sure it works with our network.

Hi rBeard88, that sounds strange! To confirm, you're using our network, but Amaysim's your carrier? Please keep us posted as we'd love to help!

@Chris_H im using amaysim; but optus is the network provider right? Amaysim piggyback off optus?

I can screenshot and send to you? ive attempted it with mobile data, wifi, both at the same time. The device status is official.

Its really annoying me

That's really odd indeed - can you provide the error message on here so we can take a look?

Very disappointing that Note Edge gets no updates... You think it'd be on par with Note 4.

That's strange Deebz, reading the list I can see Galaxy Note Edge 5.0.1 is undergoing testing. Did you mean a different model?

@Nghi,  for me the box is blank...

My Edge is still at 5.0.1 and It would be good to get 5.1.1 or even 6.0 (when it's available)

Hopefully won't be too much longer for your device to also have an OS update Deebz!

Seriously only a security update for S6 edge?  The last one broke the moving wallpaper! Now not only have we had to wait for a fix, this is not addressed? Andy can you confirm or deny?

Pete. My son has a Nexus running on your network and it works out of the box, you didn't test it for him, it downloaded and worked straight away. He is expecting another minor upgrade within the next week, you won't be testing that either. The truth is, if you used a vanilla Android, and made your bloatware optional, we would get upgrades quicker. Maybe you can explain why we didn't even get 4.4.4, when 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 were declared buggy?

Any idea when Marshmallow will be available for Galaxy S

I have 4 Samsung S4s in teh family. All use Optus as carrier. One of these (i506) got the Android 5 upgrade and the others (i505 and 2 x i506) didn't. How does this work? My Nexus 5 got Android 6 this morning. Is Optus going to offer teh Android 5 upgrade to all S4s?

@pkant We provided the Samsung S4 I9505 and I9507 variants. If you have the I506 variant it means it was purchased from somewhere other than Optus. For any handset not purchased by Optus, we play no part in the OS update process. They either are approved by the carrier you purchased them from or from the manufacturer so you'll need to refer to the relevant party

SO the phone that got the update was not through Optus? It was a 506.

What about the 505 phone?

MattJ

I can't answer that for you @pkant sorry. Only you would know where you purchased the handset from. If you have a S4 I905 or I907 from Optus then we have approved 5.0.1 for the handset. It's then up to Samsung to distribute that to the user. If you haven't received it then it would be best to speak with Samsung directly

Hi MattJ. I am wondering who is giving me the runaround. Samsung just told me that the network provider does teh software roll out. One of the three i9506 phones was update to Android 5. the other 2 haven't. You do not support them and Samsung does not do the roll out... and I am left in no man's land.

At least tell me why my i9505 is not updated. When I look for software updates, it tells me that it is up to date. In your message above you have said that Optus has rolled out the Android 5.0.1 update for the i9505.

MattJ

@pkant Samsung is somewhat correct in saying the network provider is involved in the process if you purchase the handset from us. If you don't, we can't and aren't part of the process. To be clear, we also do not roll out any software ourselves. Samsung provide the software to us, we test it to make sure it works with our network and once approved by us, it's rolled out by Samsung. Nothing comes from us directly.

Now what you haven't made clear is whether or not you bought the i9505 from us or bought it from a third party and are using one of our sim cards in the phone. If you bought it from a third party, we do not play any part in the process.

For our customers convenience, I've documented the overall process here. You may wish to take a look for further information.

I have bought all 4 phones from a third party. One of then was updated through Optus and I ma just rying to work out why that one was (thank you for the update) and teh others are not.

MattJ

@pkant if you bought the phones from a third party then we played no part in the updates. It may have just been coincidence that your phone updated roughly around the time we approved the update.

@pkant, if you turn the phone on and there is an Optus splash screen, then Optus are in charge of rollouts.
If this is not the case, in which case you said that they were purchased elsewhere, then Optus play no part, they simply give your mobile service.

If you are running a third party OS (such as CyanogenMod or the like), then check their site, as they are developed differently. (You may need to download and install a newer version for your phone if that's the case)
