Android Software Updates – 16/02/2017

Online Community Manager

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 16/02/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Well that was expected. The galaxy S7 update has been removed due to a critical issue.

What is this critical issue?

S7 edge update withdrawn.  What a joke really.  There was a problem but they released a security update this week for that problem.  So now what,  we wait now much longer?  If I was confident to flash this I would have long time ago.

Wow - how suprising, another delay for the VoLTE update for the S6.
Checking back through the history was meant to ready mid Nov... Guess Nougat 7.0 should be ready for the S6 by Christmas then?

Where we've detected software faults, we're required to liaise with the manufacturer to iron out any issues so you're experiencing a seamless user experience with your handset. Although we don't have an ETR at this stage; rest assured we have a dedicated team working only on testing, certifying and approving updates. Thanks for your continued patience.

Any estimate when the HTC M9 update will begin to roll out to users?

Seeing this is form is about sharing updates and ideas, here is an idea for the desperet people who wants a stable s7 7.0 update, ==Warning== You must understand that if you do decide to install a custom rom that is not approved by samsung and optus then you are voiding your warrenty which means, if you make a mistake and somehow manage to lock up your device, optus and sasmung will not fix your device and in most cases, turn you away. Please do you research and the risks involved, I am not reposable for your action. I recommend for the people that know what they are doing to install SuperMan Rom, I have been running it as a everyday drive with no issues, bloatware and other nonsense can easily be removed as a choice on installation. Once again, if you don't have a clue what you are doing, do some research.

Hmmm...looks like the conspiracy theory of Samsung wanting us to upgrade to S8/S8+ now is coming to a reality O.O...

Forums Community Manager

@savage01 @Jamessydney @CommodoreVT @slfepnipl Hi all, I understand the situation is frustrating but some good news today. We've received an updated version of the software from Samsung and we're working hard on completing the testing. It's expected to be completed early next week (week commencing 20/02) and then it'll be over to Samsung to distribute

Contributor savage01

@MattJ thanks for the updated information. Is the updated software still 7.0 or an updated version? 7.0.1 etc...

Contributor danz207

Awesome @MattJ, so potentially, if no issues are found; we could have the update by the end of next week?

Please tell us what happened to Samsung Galaxy A5 which was said to be testing for android 7.0 and completion expected Feb , now it seems to have disappeared from this same update of 16st Feb. 2017

Member Xxddxx

First they said that the A5 2016 would receive Nougat in late January, then in February .. then ask him to have news for the camera 2 api and they tell you "you contacted samsung" ... in the end you have to wait months and months just for a new graphics and a damn security patch, which a simple xda developer can do in a week with no bugs. I do not know the usefulness of this forum..very disappointed

Any news on p9?

Forums Community Manager

@savage01 Let me double check on the version number and get back to you

@danz207 There's a good chance of it getting to you by the end of this week but Samsung are the ones that distribute once we've tested so it'll depend on them

@Behzad Which version of the A5 do you have? Looking at previous updates it appears there may have been some confusion as there's more then 1 version of the A5. I can clarify if you can provide the model number

@Xxddxx I understand the frustration, particularly if you have used 3rd party versions of Android on your handset. To better understand the process we follow with the manufacturers, we posted information on it here. Essentially though, we can only test the updates we receive from the manufacturer.

@slfepnipl I haven't heard of it happening to anyone else but that doesn't mean it isn't. I would suggest you head into your local Optus store to have them take a look at it. It might need to be sent away for assesment but they'll talk you through your options and some initial troubleshooting before that would happen

@Zyn0 No news sorry but when we get some more info, we'll publish it within the blog

Hi @MattJ, does the software received from Samsung include the Note5?

Forums Community Manager

@Pommster I might be a little confused on this one. When Samsung have an updated version of software ready for the Note 5, they will provide it to us to test against our network but at this stage we haven't received one yet. If that doesn't quite answer your question though please let me know.

Would you happen to have an estimation on HTC 10 7.0 updates? You said that you just recieved new software from Samsung and there is a chance that it would be out by the end of the week. Is it the same for HTC 10? I would really appreciate a rough timeline if possible.

Forums Community Manager

@Edgedancer91 @Dc20011 Our current estimate is still late Feb for the HTC 10 update. I haven't received any updated information yet sorry but it shouldn't be far off and then it'll be up to HTC to distribute

@Farhan_01 @Behzad I can't comment on information on a third party site (like Sammobile) but I haven't received any information to advise that we're testing an update for the 2015 A5 model at this stage sorry. If I do receive any extra info, I'll update here.

These delays are all part of their plan to push us towards S8.

1. Delay release of software to generate anticipation

2. Release software update (just) prior new flagship phone but enough time to get users interested

3. Watch the adverts begin on Trade Up feature http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/new-phone-trade-up

4. They cash in on all the new devices and contracts.

Lets hope I'm wrong...

Contributor savage01
Contributor

@Panga If you read the update says Testing should be completed this week? @Optus to confirm. Then sent back to Samsung and then it's up to Samsung to push the update out to us. So maybe by the enday of the month or beginning of march we should see it.

Updated my phone over my 4G connection. Took me 3 minutes instead of 2 hours if I were to do it over ADSL2. My S7 Edge has updated successfully and one thing I have noted is that everything is running a lot faster now, even the wait for the device to boot has improved exponentially.

Great work Optus for testing and approving it quicky!

I am also having the IMS Service has stopped problem. Phone is vitually unusable. Spoke to Optus who didnt seem to want to know about it and Samsung dont seem to have any idea at the moment. Will Optus provide a loan a phone so i can send my s7 edge back to be sorted out?

Contributor Pommster

To those having IMS Service problems, this may be down to the default SMS app. Try installing a different SMS app and setting that as default and then going in to the application manager and and deleting the cache and data for the Samsung messages app.

Hopefully that will work.

I haven't used the default sms app in ages, too boring. Been using Evolve and the update and stability was and is perfect.

If you're having IMS problems, try enabling VoLTE (Settings, Connections, Mobile Networks). Alternatively if it is enabled; disable it.

@Optus any info on when the S6 edge+ is getting nougat? There's no mention of it in the optus update page . Firstly is the S6 edge plus going to be getting nougat and an approximate date for the software update. ? All the info we've been getting given is very vague and some clarity would be great thanks

Just to confirm, enabling VoLTE in the mobile networks settings as mentioned by danz207 seems to work as a temporary fix until a permanent solution to the problem is found. 😉

Updated my S7 to Nougat last night. Works a great along with great battery endurance and quite snappy. Only bad points is the contacts  are very hard to read and you have to go thru a two step process to show all the contacts details. Keyboard is very light and undefined even after adjustment. The pull down notifications are hard to see also very basic symbols. Live wallpapers work but you can't access them in nougat you have to download the google wallpaper app to select it. If I had to say update I would say to wait.

takes about 15 mins to update once downloaded. (1.2gb)

Hi @MattJ, how staggered is the update? I can see others with S7 Edge have updated already but its not available for me just yet.

@Missrippa We haven't received the update from Samsung to test for the S6 Edge+ sorry. We don't have any extra info at this stage on whether or not the 7.0 update will be coming to Aus handsets.

@fredzfrog While Sony might have created a Nougat update, we haven't been provided it to test against our network just yet sorry. If/When they do, we'll provide an update to customers

@Ashhk93 I'm sorry but the update has been suspended by Samsung due to an error affecting some customers after updating. We're working closely with Samsung to have a new update available asap. We've published information about this here and updated the above table now.

New Contributor Missrippa

@MattJ  thanks for replying.  Was reading on the official samsung website that nougat is being sent to the s6 edge+ phones on the 13th march

Forums Community Manager

@Missrippa no problems. Just a heads up, unless Samsung are straying from the norm with this one, the information you've mentioned would be for S6 Edge+ handsets that were purchased directly from Samsung. If you purchased yours from us (or any other telco) then the update would first be sent to our testing team to ensure there were no problems with it on our network before Samsung would then send it out to the handsets. With that in mind, there's a good chance you wouldn't receive it on the 13th of March given we haven't received it to test yet.

@Sam1else Not sure yet sorry. We're waiting for Samsung to confirm.

@Victrix Sorry but I'm not sure where the information you received came from but we don't play any part in any other carriers updates. Our testing is for Optus customers only and is only to test the update on our network, not the way the update works on the handset itself. There has been a slight delay with the 7.0 update for the HTC 10 however I'm waiting to hear back from the software updates team for the latest

@MattJ I know Optus only tests the firmware on its own network. What I'm saying is that the same firmware is used for Australia Unlocked, Vodafone, Optus, Virgin and Spark NZ devices as detailed by the firmware version number and included CID and MID in the OTA opdate files. Of course Optus will only need to test the firmware for its own network.

If issues have been detected, HTC might release the firmware to only HTC__039 CID devices which is unbranded Australian model for now.

@emanuele do you know what device your phone is? CID getter app from the playstore shows this easily.

@MattJ @Optus Where are we with the HTC 10 Nougat update? It is now beyond late February. Please update ASAP! This is unacceptable! Someone needs to be held responsible especially considering other carriers have released the update. If the delay is on HTC's side, please also communicate this.

Can you please supply me with the contact details of the Software testing team so I may find out the reasons why the HTC 10 update for Optus has been delayed. Otherwise i will go to the Ombudsman
New Contributor OGriobhtha
New Contributor

@Victrix @dfoxy1976 -- Why does it feel like HTC users are left behind and that now there is an issue with the Samsung update, they will get priority and the HTC users left waiting.  If you set a date, then you should stick to it, if there is a problem with that date, then let the people know, I'm sure they would be a lot more accomodating if they're given an update as to the status.  Frustration is born from ill given advice!

I say that HTC users are left behind as to the recent issue I had, my 10 become faulty and after being sent to their 'testing team' they sent it back with no fault found 3 times; even when the charger failed within 6 months after an update, they just sent it back and didn't even test it.  The people in the store even saw the error and were flabbergasted that no testing was done.

Yet, when I spoke to Optus on the phone their response was "I would have to pay out my contract and go on a new contract to get a new phone" -- My response was, "I like the HTC, I want to keep the HTC, I just want a working phone."

The htc 10 is a great smartphone very underrated, probably the best phone ive used overall, i have been with optus for years now, using all sorts of phones samsungs, htcs, even a windows phone ,iphones, and generally Optus network service has been great but i just keep going back to apple ... why.. software support...thats the problem with the android ecosystem unless you get a Google pixel or  something like that, you are at the mercy of that  brands phone to release software updates, then the network provider to test and then back to htc etc to release it to us...my htc 10 last security update was on 1st of august 2016...yes that long ago....

@Victrix I'm sorry but this isn't something I'll be able to share. I can assure you we're working closely with HTC to test the update they'll be releasing to their Australian, Optus customers and as such have the correct version of the update

So @MattJ if there was a delay, then why wasn't it changed in the content of the blog post?  That's where the frustration sets in from, you've set the expectation of a said date, if you update it to advise people of a change that's better than seeing a date that has already passed with no further information.  It sounds like there is no communication between departments, of if there is it sounds like it is one way.

Bad news for you buddy, the HTC 10 Optus firmware will not guarantee VoLTE for your device on the Optus network. Reason being that Telstra has their own firmware version for the HTC 10. Optus/Vodafone/Virgin share another firmware version. You can check this if you go to /settings/about/software information/software number. If your software numbers is xx.xxx.841.x then you have to wait for Tesltra to test and release Nougat. Optus release will not come to your phone. Optus phones have xx.xxx.710.x
