Android Software Updates – 14/06/2017

Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 14/06/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Is this a joke or what?!!! Now Android 7 update for S6 has withdrawn!!! What the hell does this mean?!!! Is it really that hard to release an update to Samsung phones?!! Very disappointing!!!

Just wondering when you guys are going to start rolling out the monthly security updates to the Samsung Galaxy S8 series?

@mk78 I understand it's frustrating however given the issues that we found with the update, we needed to withdraw it and have Samsung provide a new update. As soon as they've finished working on it we'll begin testing again to allow it to go out to customers as soon as possible

@Onemadgooner The information you see in these blogs only relates to the testing we conduct. We don't create or release the updates, we simply test them for network compatibility. The information you're referring to means we've finished testing but then it's over to Samsung to release it

@ashd Similar to what I said to @Onemadgooner, we only test the updates that Samsung provide. The schedule for when they'll role out really falls to them, not us sorry. We'll test them as soon as we receive them though

@MattJ Seems strange that the Australian XSA variant is on the June security update and the OPS variant is still on the 1st April security update. I would probably be best to go to the XSA variant if i'm concerned about Android security then?

@ashd That's really your call to make as it's not a process that Optus supports so I don't really have advice for you one way or another sorry.

@ashd I would actually advise against this. There's not a threat severe enough that being one month behind is cause for alarm. Optus and Australian Retail updating schedules have actually been pretty close for the S7 and S8. In my opinion, switching to the XSA firmware would cause you to lose Optus specific features (never not buying a phone without VoLTE again) and has the potential for issues when flashing XSA firmware. Plus you'd have to reset your phone most likely.

You're better off staying on OPS firmware. But that's just my $0.02

Can any further information regarding the Galaxy S6 Nougat update be provided? Currently the update has rolled out to both Vodafone and Telstra customers and there is no information as to why or when Optus customers will receive the same update? As it stands, this is enough of an issue to prevent myself from ever buying an Optus phone again and the lack of communication to customers is definitely a contributing factor.

Hi,

how's that possible the my S8 (bought it home today from an Optus shop, sealed and brand new) is still on the April security patch (I updated the phone)??? I'm on a lease and I'd like to know if it's all right to flash a stock firmware to see if I get the June update. Please, would it be a problem when I'll have to return the phone? Many thanks

@Orin the above represents the most up-to-date information we have. The Blog is updated within days of any updates we receive from manufacturers. N7.0 is currently withdrawn pending rework and is currently with Samsung. Apologies for the inconvenience.

@tngtsmn thatnks for the questions. Replacing the firmware is not recommended and may incur repair costs on assessment, if the phone loses functionality as a result. Please wait for the appropriate release from Optus.

tngtsmn
by Occasional Contributor tngtsmn
‎2017-06-16 06:04 PM

@Scott_M Ok that is not recommended, but what happen when I'll return the phone? FYI, I'll be replacing with a stock Australian firmware version, nothing exotic. And let's say nothing goes wrong with the flashing, so no functionality loss or dramas. I'm not happy to wait for a Optus release, that's too late and irresponsible. Many thanks for your support

@tngtsmn I have to agree with you. There is no loss in finctionality going to XSA and getting regular monthly updates. At worst you'll lose the optus boot up logo and thats it.

I'm perplexed as to where the hold up is here for the monthly updates - I see that all the US carriers seem to be pushing them out a lot more regularly now.

Guess next time i'll just buy an unlocked device direct from Samsung

To All S6 Holders,

I just updated my phone to Telstra framework from Sammobile website and my phone came back with Android 7 with all existing apps and data untouched and of course no Knox tripping, etc.

Now I'm sure you can update to XSA as well if you want an unbranded phone and this process is much easier than you think.

So just totally ignore Optus and dont bother with the crap and excuses they are giving to us about framework upgrade and just update your phone to enjoy the leatest version of Android on your phone.

No Android 7 Update for S6 for Optus phones only, whiile everyone else enjoying it. Is this the service they were proud of? Whats the point to be with them, and not with Vodafone when they have better plans even? My contract is finish with optus n i am moving on.

@mk78, thanks for sharing your experience.

I wonder why you decided to flash a Telstra branded firmware when you could go for a generic one.

Second question: is Telstra firmware getting updates as soon as the generic ones (XSA). If so it definitely sounds like bs that Optus doesn't release them for testing purposes.. or do they really offer any "advanced" at the price of less security (they're always 1-2 months behind).

By the way the tone of they're answer by not giving really specific or technical reason, makes it feel like they want just to assure you without and not giving you any real answer: too bad.

@tngtsmn @Optus ive not had a security patch or any updates for my s6 edge+ in six months. The federal government tells us to keep our phones upto date with software and security patches but optus are letting their customers down and leaving themselves open to lawsuiys if peoples phones hacked as a result of them not providing updates to us.

My S8+ also still has the April update, It's nearly the end of June. The July update will be out soon.

Any idea when we will be getting the June update? I"m hitting check software daily and it's not showing.

Does the update come from Google or Samsung - or is it sent from Optus?

Just got a work SIM in my S8 most of the time (and swap back in the evenings) so that's why I wanted to know where the update came from - ie carrier specific to Optus (and no point checking while the Amaysim is in??)

@ashd Thanks, the May update is better than nothing, considering that the XSA one will probably get updates faster in general later on. Another question if you don't mind - when flashing the XSA firmware with Odin, do I need to do a factory reset or does it not touch user data? I've only been used to updating Nexus devices previously

Is anyone else paying $100+ a month and are still being jibbed by optus? Android 7 has been out for almost a year it is beyond a joke! A little word of advice everyone that wants latest upadate so all of your personal info is SECURE... you can have the optus firmware removed and the android 7 added to your device. Go into your local computer shop and inquire. They are holding your updates back so that you PURCHASE MORE from them it is theft. For phones like the p9 you will be able to take advantage of the dual sim once optus firmware has been removed!!

So you can do it.....

@aphex2k to be fair .. the nexus and pixel lines get their updates direct from google with no carrier or manufacturer in the middle - thats the idea behind those devices

Samsung et al are always going to lag behind .. the interesting part here though is that other reigons (like the US) are getting their monthly patches through the likes of verizon and at&t

Mind you.. Optus are currently only 1 security patch behind at the moment (XSA is still on May)

We're a week away from July. I can't see what they're testing or a reason to hold back. June update has some interesting features as well as the security update.

I'm not patient when it comes to updates, unfortunately.

Missrippa
by Member Missrippa
‎2017-06-25 11:26 AM

@ashd you're only one security patch behind? My S6 edge+ is almost 7 months behind in security patches. Havent had one this year. Optus don't care about their customers but then  no telco does . What i find interesting is that other countries with singtel - the parent company for optus have the nougat update,  and in countries that some may class as third world countries.  .

ashd
by Member ashd
‎2017-06-25 11:32 AM

@aphex2k I agree with you .. I went to an XSA image in the end. There's been too many big android security holes to sit around waiting. Although, Optus have said that they haven't been provided an update from Samsung yet - so maybe this is Samsung's fault and Optus are stuck in the middle? I dont actually know .. but past Samsung phones show the same pattern of lack of patching and support

@Missrippa sorry .. I was talking about S8 phones. My S6 also got moved to XSA firmware and is on 7 and getting some updates.

I think the moral of the story here is that if you want fast updates you go to the Pixel (Nexus) lines .. or if you want the features of a Samsung phone you buy it outright on the XSA firmware direct from Samsung - I know this sucks but they are the only solutions I can see

Missrippa
by Member Missrippa

@ashd. All good. Ive spoken to samsung directly about nougat. They sent it to optus/telstra/ vodafone all on same day many months ago.  They say the issue is with optus.  This is both my last optus/ samsung phone. Never again

@Missrippa Thanks for your post about contacting Samsung directly and being told that all the major Oz telcos got the software at the same time and that the problem is with Optus.

So...

Either Optus is lying  or Samsung is lying.

Very interesting that there has been no official response to your post....

It says above "7.0 Update – Update withdrawn due to network issues. Samsung now working on new update including VoLTE and WiFi calling capability ". You have to receive it to withdraw it so Optus didn't lie. I'd say Samsung staff haven't been updated that Samsung are working on a new update rather than lying

by New Contributor tizza42
‎2017-06-28 01:46 PM

@SamSam I just chatted with Samsung and here is the end of the transcript - I can provide the whole transcript if you like.

[Jenny(Agent):13:43:46] I would suggest contacting Optus regarding the Software update and you may confirm with them the reason why they are not releasing the Software update yet. I am really sorry, Peter. However, we do not have any reported issues with our Software.
[Peter(Customer):13:44:08] thank you Jenny and have a nice day

So Samsung have stated that there is no reported problem...

SamSam
by Respected Contributor
‎2017-06-28 02:05 PM

Out of curiousity, did they acknowledge that Optus had withdrawn it at all? Or did they just say to contact Optus because the software had been provided to them?

tizza42
by New Contributor tizza42
‎2017-06-28 02:22 PM

@SamSam they did not comment on whether Optus has withdrawn it or not.  I was asking if they could confirm that they were working on a problem with the update for Optus.  They said that there were no reported problems with update.  Now the person I was talking to may or may not know, but I was asking them to specifically state something and they answered as shown.  It doesn't mean Samsung aren't working on it - Jenny may not know, but she didn't say she didn't know because I asked her to confirm more than once.

Samsung probably are working on something for you.  But as several other customers have stated, it is pretty frustrating when we hear that all of the other Oz telcos have rolled it out.  Makes me think "why is Optus so different"?

And as I stated some posts back - it was made more frustrating because Optus only updated the status at the end of May.  So we were all hanging out for a mid-late May roll out, then we get told - nup.

I would have thought that your testing processes have been honed over the years and you should have a regression testing regime in place.  I would have thought that you would have known early on in the testing if there was a major problem.  I'm saying this because I have worked in ICT for 40 years across different continents - so I'm not some novice IT person.

It says they are working on a new update - not just fixing the problem.  If they are adding extra features in this new software, it is even more upsetting as it is pro-longing the rollout even more...

I'll probably just buy a Motorola Z Play for <$500 when I come off contract.
