When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 13/07/2015.  If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

Just a correction, M8 (and 99% sure M7 as well) still on 5.0.1 🙂

When will the S5 get an upgrade?

I'm having problems with bluetooth connections to some devices that have been addressed with version 5.0.2. I'd prefer to stay with the standard optus upgrades if possible.

Forums Community Manager

@mehmetyou no news yet. As above, if an update isn't listed it means we haven't received it from the manufacturer. We update fortnightly through so keep an eye out.

@danz207 thanks. We'll check with the testing team to confirm and correct. It's appreciated!

When will the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 be getting an upgrade? Most other regions have been updated to 5.0.1 for months

I have to ask any news at all for 5.1.1 for the Note 4?

Battery life is so bad with 5.0.1

LOL! So funny how Optus still hasn't released 5.0 for Note 3. I doubt they will, but anyways you can manually flash 5.0 for Note 3 very easily. Just google search it.

@bs437 Nothing in our schedule yet sorry but if/when there's news we'll update everyone via the blog.

@AndWhat Nothing yet on the Note 4 update sorry. It's not in the list above which means we haven't received the update from the manufacturer for testing.

@moustafasadek1 We're yet to receive the update for testing for the Note 3. Once we do we'll update everyone on the status of our testing

Hi.

Samsung updated galaxy s4 international variant and most of other carriers to lollipop, while optus is still claiming that they haven't recived the update yet.

Is it shows that optus/optus users has no priority for Samsung.???

Forums Community Manager

@inayatalikara There are a number of factors that contribute to if and when we receive an update from a manufacturer but it doesn't necessarily mean we're lower when it comes to priority. Hopefully it's not to much longer for you though

The Note 4 is a dog on 5.0.1.  I've had to turn mine off and go back to my old Blackberry Q10 until the 5.1.1 update appears.  Some days that Note has come periously close to being jettisoned across the room into the wall, with constant lags and battery drain.  Such a shame for a high spec phone.

Now Optus say its not a priority to get 5.1.1 on it.  *Any* Android phone running 5.0.1 on the Optus network should be priority upgraded.  Wish I never wasted my upgrade on this lemon, considering the support that Optus gives it.

I TOTALLY AGREE! I like the new lollipop features and really I don't notice too much lag. But my Note 4's battery drain is unacceptable. I can’t stress that enough. This is the current Samsung flagship phablet and I also agree any phone running 5.0.1 should be a priority upgrade.

The Note 4 should of received 5.1.1 before the S6 IMO. The S6 is already on 5.0.2 and has touchwiz optimized from release.

Guys, if you're upgrading from KitKat, perform a factory reset. It'll remove residual files and may just speed up your phone. Lollipop is smooth on my M8.

Contributor
Contributor
danz207, I did that when i first updated, lollipop is smooth on my Note 4 but battery life is bad. And this is after spending months watching what each app is doing on my phone and tweaking everything as much as i can. So it's obviously a lollipop problem as noted internationally. 5.1.1 has stated that it fixes these problems (signal/battery drain) on the Note 4.

A factory reset doesn't solve the memory leak bug in 5.0.1 and 5.0.2. It is fixed in 5.1.1. It causes all sorts of nastiness, including battery drains. Sadly, this was well known *before* Optus even had Lollipop for testing.

Posted from my solid Blackberry, which is no longer available from Optus 😞

@lavo96 @AndWhat I'll pass your feedback onto our software testing team so they can discuss it with the manufacturer. We're essentially at the mercy of the manufacturer until we receive the update to begin testing but at the very least we can ensure they're across users concerns with the latest available update.

@MattJ Lollipop was released in January, and this bug was reported widely then.  5.1.1 was already in the wild for Nexus series before Optus released 5.0.1.

The thing is Optus will wear the brunt of a poorly performing phone, before Google and Samsung amongst the average Joe users.  I don't buy for one minute that Samsung stagger releases of software updates for telcos. And if they do, I'll never get a Samsung ever again.

Would be great to get some clarification but isn't it the job of the manufacturer to ensure the update works with the handset and additional software (with Samsung I'm referring Touchwiz) and it's then Optus' job to test if said update works with the network? So therefor the battery drain and signal issues would be up to Samsung to correct, not Optus.

@MattJ shed some light?

@niloch

Apparently M8 5.1 update with Sense 7 is coming in August but unsure when it's coming to Optus.

Did you perform a factory reset when you upgraded? My M8 is perfect.

Hi Steven1, the current OS available for your Galaxy S4 (I9505) is 4.4.2. Once more information becomes available to us, you'll be able to access it via this thread.

We really hope that this helps.

I have an HTC One M7 that is bricked and bootloooping.

I need the Optus 7.21.980.5 RUU or higher to try and recover the phone but it is not available anywhere.

Could Optus please make this available?

Thanks

Hey kamold, that's not good to hear. I can confirm we don't have a site available where you'll be able to download firmware. Roms can only be downloaded OTA for HTC handsets.

Thanks for the reply Pete,

I have contacted HTC and they advised that the RUU can only be provided by the carriers as they are customized.

Happy to continue this discussion offline, please feel free to email me.

The Optus carrier ID is one of the only RUUs that is not available online somewhere, I'd really like to be able to restore this handset rather than throw it out.

At the moment kamold, the only software available is the latest version 😞 We don't support removing software from the phone outside official updates. If you're having issues with the phone bootlooping and the phone is still under warranty, we can get the phone serviced for you through an Optus store and bring it back to life.

I read that the M8 is missing out on 5.1.1 and going directly to marshmallow?

Hey @niloch! We'll have to wait and see what we're provided with to test and approve. We definitely want you to have the latest software version and as soon as we have it, it will be listed in our fortnightly update. Newer updates can be seen in the top right of the page.

@kiko we post a new blog every 2 weeks regarding software upgrades. This one is from July so is well and truly outdated but you can view the newest one here - https://community.optus.com.au/t5/Announcements/Android-Software-Updates-16-11-2015/ba-p/137226

It shows that we're testing the 5.0.1 update for the S4 and expect it to be approved by late Nov 🙂

My wife's S3 updated to 4.4.4 about a week ago but so far mine hasn't. Any suggestions about how long this may take, please?

Hey Crossy, were both handsets purchased through Optus?

Frequent Contributor

No. My Optus handset was stolen so I purchased a new I9305T as a replacement.

RetiredModerator

The firmware info we provide is in reference to handsets purchased through Optus as handsets we sell have Optus branded firmware. You'll need to ask the place of purchase or the manufacturer for more info as to when you'll be able to update the software.

Thanks. Dissapointing but understandable.

It would be nice if all firmware is the same and gets rolled out at the same time 😕 Hope you have a great week ahead.

I have contacted Samsung, hopefully I'll get some positive answers.

Hi Pete,

The good news is that Samsung replied and provided me with a link to download their Smart Switch, which in turn allowed me to update the GT-I9305T to Android 4.4.4

Settings were kept and nothing was lost.

There is no bad news lol
