Android Software Updates - 13/01/2017

Android Software Updates.pngWhen a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 11/01/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and is approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Still no Nougat for GS7/GS7Edge? So disappointed 😞 *speechless*

"Global issue of intermittent reset" - was that why my GS7Edge restarted itself randomly couple of times?

Really! Still no testing nougat for SG7?

It just seems to be taking longer and longer these days for updates. Waiting for Nougat for Z5 Premium 😥

No news on Android N for the Huawei P9?

Hey @TheFuzz, nothing confirmed as yet. Huwaei had announced that the roll out would commence early this year. Once we receive an update it will definitely be communicated via this blog.

Its so frustrating after having a note 7 and knowing how much better the software was on that phone and then going back to an edge waiting and waiting and waiting for that same note 7 software. Even though the note 7 was practically the exact same internally, you have to wonder why the hell it takes so bloody long to come to the S7 edge!

So any estimate on Nougat for Galaxy S7 ?

hi testers! why the galaxy a5 2016 information does not appear? and above we have been resolved camera 2 api problems and the fingerprint reader does not work properly while it is charging?

Hey! Please answer me!

Don't be a jerk @Xxddxx, Optus probably don't know / care about that specific issue, your best bet is to contact Samsung (which won't be of help).

Can someone please provide an update regarding the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge Nougat testing?

As you are no doubt aware, the official build has been released to unlocked handsets globally and I would be surprised if Samsung have not submitted the bits to Optus for testing.

Considering these are likely the best selling handsets for Australia's second largest carrier I would hope that the question would not have to be asked more than three times in order to evoke a response from a rep.

Hey @Bombora, thanks for the feedback. Once we have more solid details, it will be posted on this thread. Stay tuned Smiley Happy

Please Optus, don't make me regret signing up.

@Bombora thanks for asking the question again.

I did some Googling. Apparently Telstra hasn't got theirs either. With Vodafone, it says "Issues found during testing, awaiting new software from Samsung."

I'm also sick and tired of all the waiting as well as continuously having to check this forum for the not-so-specific updates. BTW, did you just mention "Australia's second largest carrier"?

Occasional Contributor slfepnipl

Yes @Lando, I've even cleared off junk and backed up my phone to make way for the big (1.3 GB) update. Now, fingers crossed that we'll be getting 7.1.1 and not 7.0.

Sorry for the long wait with this Lando, as Serena mention as soon as we get any information. We'll update the blog.

Thanks

So was the 6.0.1 update for the S7 Edge supposed to fix the random phone resets? Because that's the software version I have and my phone has reset at least once a day for the last week...

RetiredModerator Nam_L
RetiredModerator

Hey Smatizio,

If your Samsung keeps resetting, I'd recommend you coming into one of our stores so we could assess the phone. So long as there's not psychical or water damage to the phone it'll definitely be covered under warranty.

Thanks,

@Nam_L I've been experiencing the same issue too with my phone restarting randomly, but I'll just wait for the Nougat and Jan patch to see if it fixes the issue.

Keep on posted on how you go slfepnipl.

Contributor savage01

@slfepnipl for the galaxy S7 it will be Android 7.0 as that was whats was released in the UK a couple of days ago. Yes official nougat has been released for the SM-G930F.

Occasional Contributor slfepnipl
Occasional Contributor

@savage01 yes, I read about that too. But those were only for unlocked SM-G930F/S7 and SM-G935F/S7Edge devices. I've got the latter device. Carrier associated ones should be rolled out hopefully by the next couple of weeks. US is following suit too. Now we just need more updates from our Australian carriers.

@Koraylan if you check the blog properly you will see updates but nothing regarding nougat for the S7.

Hi Optus,

Unbranded Australian versions of the Huawei P9 are getting the Android 7.0 upgrade and have been since Thursday. Is there an update regarding the Optus branded P9's? One would think you must have more infomation regarding this. If it is good enough for customers with the same phone in Australia sureley Optus should be able to release the update?

At this point it is easier for me to flash my phone with the unbranded firmware than to wait for your modified version.

Fuzz.

Hi @TheFuzz.  We don't have any specific news to share on the firmware update for the P9 at the moment.  Unlocked devices have the updates pushed to them direct from the manufacturer, whereas extensive testing has to occur before we release an update.  More on this here.  Bear in mind than manually altering the software may invalidate your warranty. We appreciate your patience, and we'd rather ensure that software is fully compliant with our network and services before releasing it.

I read today that Samsung and Sony have halted the rollout of Nougat to S7, S7 Edge and Xperia devices respectively due to "some users experiencing inconsistencies related to audio playback via third-party apps and SD card encrypted data read performance".

I hope Optus is cutrrently conducting extensive testing to ensure that the rollout will be a smooth one.  Also, are we getting the Jan security patch alongside the new upgrade?

RetiredModerator Guy

Security patches are usually rolled in with any major software releases. Best to keep an eye on the site as we update it.

My S7 Edge has been rebooting every 5 minutes ! I have taken it to samsung and they keep repeating the same thing, "NO FAULT FOUND". Am fed up with the issues. Trying to terminate the contract ! Well done Optus ! Thanks for screwing up the update testing process and creating issues for your loyal customer base !

Hey wozrmx, we still haven't got an update as to when this will be released.

Completely get that it's frustrating and we'll certainly let you all know once we have an update on this here.

Yikes! That's disappointing to hear gautham Smiley Sad

Did they say it could be resolved with a software update?

We can send it away to be assessed for you however if it happens intermittently it's possible it will be hard to recreate during testing.

Occasional Contributor slfepnipl
Occasional Contributor

@Marie can you please confirm that Optus hasn't received any Nougat from Samsung for testing purposes?

On the Vodafone community, it says "Issues found during testing, awaiting new software from Samsung."

I'm sorry to say this but are you sure you're the second largest carrier in the country? Perhaps you're actually falling behind your competitors in receiving updates?

What we need now is a transparent upgrade timeline and not some wishy washy lip service! Frustrating is just an understatement here!
