Android Software Updates.pngWhen a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides info on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 11/07/2016. If no info is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices & once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, where it’s made available for a small number of users (5% for example) initially. If no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll be gradually made available to more & more users over a period of a couple of weeks.

I noticed that Note 4 is completed testing how long till its rolled out?

MattJ

@adamhumphrey we just test the updates to make sure they work on our network. It's up to the manufacturer (Samsung in this case) to distribute so I can't give a definitive answer sorry. If recent history is anything to go on though, I'd say you should have it within the next couple of weeks (it's a staggered roll out so some people get it sooner then others).

Hi - Thanks heaps for maintaining this blog.

I see the Note Edge marshmallow update is 'on hold'. I've not seen this before. What does this mean?

MattJ

@NoobimusMaximus It can mean a number of different things but the end result is we've sent it back to the manufacturer to modify the update as we've found some sort of bug whilst testing it against our network. We need to wait for the updated version to then start testing again. Hopefully won't be much longer 🙂

So the Note 4 says its "current version" is 6.0.1, this is not true. When i check for updates i am told there is nothing to update.

If it's not "ready" yet.....it shouldn't say that 6.0.1 is it's current version!

@coggibird Totally agree, Optus may have tested the version but when you ask a question and no answer when its going to be released its pretty frustrating. Maybe Optus should actually talk to Samsung and confirm when things are being updated.

MattJ
Forums Community Manager

@coggibird Current version refers the latest version we've approved. As we've approved the 6.0.1 update for the Note 4, it's listed as current. We don't distribute it, the manufacturer does so we have no control over that. Most roll outs are staggered as well so while it might not register as available for your handsets, others may have already received it. My apologies for any confusion.

What was the issue with the note edge being put on hold? It has the same Rom as the note 4, same firmware, with the added cocktail bar. How can you approve the note 4, but not the note edge. Seems kind a strange? I hope its released before the n7 arrives. !!

MattJ

@whenxmas I was thinking the same thing when I first saw it but there was a bug that came up that only occured on the edge. Strange one but hopefully not a difficult fix for Samsung so we can get it approved for everyone

@MattJ

Thank you for the quick reply..

You say bug, what was the issue on the edge for this bug to delay the release. As your aware Samsung is very slow in supplying fixes for redo firmware in Australia. Will this have the volte active also in this firmware? Will Optus support volte on previous older samsung handsets, n4 n3 etc..

MattJ
Forums Community Manager

@whenxmas I don't have the specifics of the bug sorry but it was enough for our testers to push it back to Samsung for a fix. This update won't have VoLTE active in it though. At this stage it's just the S7 and S7 Edge as well as the iPhone 6 and above models but as we add new models we'll let people know. At this stage there's no information on whether it will be made available to previous models.

Thanks again for your quick reply..

Its a shame that optus and telstra arent doing the volte on previous flagship phones. Voda on the other hand is, so i will be worth giving it a try when there rom is released soon. Not too worry, im all in when n7 hits the store soon. Mid August by the sounds of it..thanks mate enjoy your day...!

I'm with you on the N6/7. Very keen to see what Samsung have in store for us this time round. Aug 3 I think is the unboxing event so hopefully it won't be to long after that it's available in Aus 🙂

Any word on June security update for the Galaxy Note 5?

Does Optus check all the monthly updates for the current handsets?

MattJ

@Pommster No update on that yet sorry. And yes Google requested that we be involved with checking all updates for network compatability.

If anyone see's the Note 4 update, (maybe through kies) let us know. It would be useful for ppl like me that are on unofficial marshmellow roms.

Hi there I was wondering if there has been any update on the LG G4 6.0.1 as its been more than 3 months since LG released the update for this model. As this update fixes my MMS issues. If your not ever going to do the update just say so and stop saying wait and keep looking so I can stop bothering looking at this notice board and going into your stores and asking them to call up. Thank You.

Also if the 6.0.1 is not coming at least tell me if the security patches are being sent out for this model.

Hi @Surfkid_88, we only have the information the manufacturers provide us with sorry. Until they advise that an update is ready to be tested on our network, we don't have much more information. The same applies for the security updates, it's down to the manufacturer to provide us with the update to test.

Hey I've just purchased an OPPO R9 as well as a new Optus SIM only service. I cannot seem to get the OPPO to tether to my Windows 8.1 laptop. We tested the OPPO and a MAC and same result - we could see the device but no data. Any clues? I have already been onto OPTUS chat support for quite some time where we checked the APN settings etc. but no result. Help, please!

Any word on the 6.0.1 update for Z5 Premium?

@Optus I may have found a bug with Note 4. Another user is reporting same bug but with XSA firmware so it's probably a bug in all the AU firmwares

Under Settings -> Backup and reset The option for Backup account is greyed out with the text "No account is currently storing backed up data"

I factory restored after upgrading and choose yes to Backup with the first Google account I entered. I have even tried suggestions online which is to remove all Google Accounts, and re-add and it will prompt you to select a backup account after re-adding them which it did and I chose my account but still it is greyed out with the text

Backup settings in Google Drive say to wait 24 hours for apps to appear in Backup list but it has been 36 hours

Pptus can you please advise if this is a known issue found during testing and if not please request Samsung to rectify

When is the Marshmallow update coming  for the Xperia phones?! This was starting to be rolled out in March and yet there is no update impending through Optus in the July update! Could you be proactive and contact Sony about this update? Because at this rate, my next phone contract will be with a company that releases timely updates.

Can you please advise of the update progress.

Is there any plan to enable the FM chip inside of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with one of the updates? The handset is documented to have the FM radio inside from what a Samsung tech told me, but requires activation on a carrier by carrier basis. This would increase the appeal of the device to many potential buyers and put the Optus S7 variants ahead of the other big carriers. I would really appreciate if this could be considered when testing future S7 updates.

My wife has a subscription and likes to read the SMH as a paper image rather than using the dedicated App.

To do this I installed Dolphin on her Samsung Tab A 8.0 model SM-P350 and set it to desktop mode and installed flash. Nice solution under Android 5.0.2

Since upgrading to Android 6.0.1 Dolphin crashes.

As suggested by Dolphin I enabled Jetpack, install flash and set Flash player to always on

This resulted in very slow performance, missing text, eventually a black screen, sometimes a freeze followed by a crash "Unfortunately Dolphin has stopped"

Turning Jetpack off results in "Couldn't load plugin" message

Is anyone able to offer any advice please?
Has anyone installed Dolphin with flash on a Tab A running Marshmallow?

@rc211e Flash hasn't been supported in Android since around 4.0 I believe. It's widely considered a pain and a security nightmare. Take this as a blessing and cease using flash.

@danz207 As I said above it worked fine on 5

danz207

@rc211e Yes, and I said supported (as in officially supported). That's not to say that there are workarounds (as you've obviously found). My suggestions was also to stop using it as there are significant security vulnerabilities that may leave your wifes tablet at risk. It's up to you, but if you're having a problem with an app, contact them not Optus...

I upraded my SGN4 to the latest software 6.01 Marshmallow 3 days ago and now my phone is totally useless, I'm having nighmares trying to keep my phone stable as it keeps freezing, lagging, self rebooting etc... Anyone else having the same issues after uprafing to Marshmallow? I'm really disappointed that Optus has released this upgrade but obviously did not test the firmware enough but released it OTA with disasterous results to those that have upgraded... My Note 4 is now totally un-operational and I don't reccommend anyone upgarading untill Optus has answers and solutions to the Marshmallow disaster.

Optus, please help?

@Nafsta I'm having the same issues as you, i've factory reset multiple times and reflashed the firmware.  I've also tried the unbranded XSA version with the same results.  I had been using the Indian variant of the MM rom since April and had no issues at all.  Not sure what has happened to the Australian versions. hope it gets fixed soon.

Hi everyone,

Hi Optus

My wife and I have SM-T815Y and 715. I.e. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, 9.7" and the 8" varient.  The 9.7" model is still sold by Optus. Optus shop link for samsung-galaxy-s2

We understood this tablet was effectively Samsung's flagship product, and we understood the product was going to be supported by Optus. Since Marshmallow came out we have been waiting for my tablet to update ( I'm the techy one ) to assess whether my wife wanted the update.

Around 6 weeks ago, Samsung started rolling out Marshmallow to the 8" model SM-T715Y 8" Firmware but none for Aus. Indeed, Telstra rolled out the Marshmallow update for their SM-815Y 9.7" customers in May, but nothing from Optus ( SM-T815Y 9.7" Firmware confirming telstra release).

I contacted Samsung by email 6 weeks ago, they confirmed the update was coming. Give it a month and download Sideshare and/or Kies if the OTA update is not available. It wasnt't so I did. Still no update. I contacted them again last week by phone and online chat and they confirmed they've released the update for Aus for both tablets and they're with carriers now. Well, we have unlocked tablets on Optus sim cards ... no updates. They advised me today to take it up with Optus, which unfortunately I wasn't able to do during work hours.

Your page suggests no software in the works for either tablet, and does not mention the 8" at all. Given the software is released and telstra has been able to release it for the 9.7" when do Optus plan on releasing it?
