Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 07/12/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

What is the expected date of completion on the mate 9 firmware?

Why are you holding up the mate 20 Pro update. You need to chase up and Get this Update released urgently.

Isn't there an optus representative in the YesCrowd Forum anymore? Nobody wants to answer a simple question. Pretty rude way to support your valuable customers I reckon.

TIO have responded and forwarded to Optus to have the issue of the missing updates 9.0.0.146 resolved by 21st December 2018 and that optus representative has to reply before this date.

Hey guys, I'm here.

I've been out of the office since Wednesday, but I'm going to chase this up for you guys.

Last time there was a question around the TAB S4 security update. I've answered that question below:

Mate 20 Pro

According to GSM arena

The first new software update is currently available in both the UK and South Africa - EMUI 9.0.0.126. That was back on the 01/11/18. I haven't been able to source any articles with an AUS release date.

I can see that another update is also on its way -  EMUI version 9.0.0.142 and will have the November 2018 security patch level.

New software testing reporting is due tomorrow. I'll wait for that to come through and relay any relevant information here.

Galaxy Tab S4 is open market version. There will be no updates for Optus. Samsung updates will be for all open market customers and we do not need to test unless the changes are significant.

Look like we're relying on Samsung Aus for the update.

What about the Mate 9?  The problem that I'm seeing at the moment is that its taking longer than a month to test firmware.  If Google start publishing monthly security updates how will Optus ever keep up with testing these?

https://www.androidauthority.com/android-9-0-update-880718/ Bit of info here, not sure how relevent it is to Optus though as they do seem to take a long time "testing" even the small security updates.

All I can do is ask @Dazkatmaka11.

I report back to the team responsible for device testing and relay information back to you guys.

Where are you finding info on version 9.0.0.153?

Android authority posted an article on the 07/12/18

"The update, listed as version 9.0.0.142 (build number C316E11R1P16), weighs in at 523MB and made its way to our personal device. And it brings plenty of improvements to the table."

@stockferret, just finding confirmation on the Google Security update that began rolling out on the 07/12/18. My report is missing the month.

@Dazkatmaka11 you’re pathetic and quite frankly clueless. Huawei don’t release all versions to all countries at the same time. If you want perfectly on time firmware updates go over to apple im sure they can accomodate you. But please keep ranting as I am really enjoying the laughs, better yet seeing as you consider yourself the people’s champion figure out how to flash your m20p reliably and report back you and your buddies at xda where you quote as your source should have no trouble.

@SteveV Come on mate, when the latest version officially released is 166 and Optus is still stuck on 122 something's gotta give. Especially when these updates are providing important fixes that resolve usability issues with the phone.

@SteveV Go troll somewhere else Moron

Dazkatmaka11
by Frequent Contributor
‎2018-12-14 03:41 PM

As per advised by TIO, Huawei are not responsible for providing the latest version to the end user where a telecommunications company has "Branded" the device with their company logo.

Optus however are responsible for delivering to the end user the most up to date software available for the device. If the latest software available has been programmed to fix any system, modification or security update which affects the overall usability, optus is required to provide this to any "Optus Branded Device" as a priority service.

And SteveVizard need not respond to this post as it does not concern the intervention of trolling.

SteveV
by Contributor SteveV
‎2018-12-14 03:51 PM

You're still not getting it are you. YOU chose to buy the branded product it was not forced on you. Optus can only work with what huawei has provided them. Different regions get different versions at different times. The phone software works fine for me I haven't had any issues and the hardware hasn't faulted yet. Seems to me @Dazkatmaka11 is just looking to be a thorn I find it ironic you call me a troll but your post count on this thread outnumbers me 5 to 1. SteveV
by Contributor SteveV
‎2018-12-17 11:03 AM

fact of the matter is huawei distribute the software as a blanket version and it's not always going to conform to the carriers specification and required compliances. Yes optus has received updated firmware I think Dan said it was around the 9.0.0.145 mark it does take time to test and implement any changes.

Wattsy

I would be curious to know what testing is required. If I purchased a phone outright but was using an Optus Sim I would still get the update, which part of the Optus network requires months of testing? Conversely as I have done with previous outright phones is put in a sim from another carrier got the update then put my Optus sim back in for no issues so again which part of the Optus experience requires months of testing?

Months...... Dunno what your talking about. The mate 20 pros only been on the market here for a little over a month the update first came to my attention 10 days ago via gsmarena being that I haven't had a single issue with my mate 20 pro I admit I wasn't actively looking. Oh I see your referencing a superseded huawei model sorry my bad you didn't read thru the previous posts and know what model I refer to.

@Wattsy Yes that's right, my Nexus 6p was on the optus postpaid network wasn't Branded and received updates every month from Google. I guess this is the same with the pixel 3s. So just what needs testing. I wonder how many people work in the software team.

SteveV
by Contributor SteveV
‎2018-12-18 09:28 AM

@Dazkatmaka11 globally maybe 10 weeks. In Australia it released 1st November meaning optus has had it on market the same. That's close on 50 days. 50 days divided by 7 days to make a week equates to 7 weeks. 9.0.0.146 came to attention via gsmarena 7th so a little over 10 days ago.

I thought I'd shoot through a couple of updates I've received in advance.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Update: Android: 9.0.0 software upgrade
Build: BLA-L09 8.0.0.118(C34)

Status: Testing

Estimated release: Late Dec - early Jan

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Update: Build: LYA-L09 9.0.0.146(C34E11R1P16)

Estimated release: Early - Mid Jan

So we are going to wait another 3 to 4 weeks, 9.0.0.166 has been released with system stability and call signal improvements, are you going to start working on that?

More than likely they will be yet more updates before this one is released by optus.

Optus is currently 6 versions behind.

@miffymiffy check the firmware via your phone I'm sitting on 122 currently updated about a month ago. @Dan_C mid January is a bit long in the tooth considering.9.0.0.146 will be the November security patch. Maybe the team should push out what they have already and start work on the latest version (although huawei has released 6 versions in a fortnight so who knows what version it'll be next week)

Dazkatmaka11

@Dan_C Mid January is ridiculous. 13/12/18 version 9.0.0.166 released, 18/12/18 version 9.0.0.171 released.

Also there's a small 3.80 MB Patch for NFC issue dropping around the world.

The times I quote are purely to set the right expectation (things do go wrong and it's the holiday period).

I'd rather be safe than promise an exact date.

The "target date" in my reports states the 21st of DEC, that's for the Mate 10 Pro update

The "target date" in my report states the 8th of Jan, that's for the Mate 20 Pro update.

Edit* you also have to remember that it's the manufacture that pushes out the update over air. That's pushed out over the course of a couple of weeks.

I'd be happy with waiting until January as long as we at least get firmware 9.0.0.166.. I've read it improves all cameras by quite a bit and fixes the blank screen app crash that I've had a couple times.

I wish Optus would just sell unbranded phones, it would fix all the problems.

I've owned the Optus mate 10 pro since 1st of Dec 2017, the amount of updates passed onto us is atrocious and stops me from upgrading to a mate 20 pro, Since I know it will be more of the same.

There is one possible solution. You can apparently update any Mate 20 Pro to the .171 global rom via FunkyHuawei. It shouldn't affect functionality either, as there isn't any hardware differences between Mate 20 pro variants. Costs US$18 though and it's uncertain if future updates will be available OTA direct from Huawei, or you'll need to do it via FH again. So yeah kinda risky, but for those who want the update now, it's there.

Dazkatmaka11

‎2018-12-20 12:05 PM

@Dan_C So if we can update via Funky Huawei and not experience network issues, why do you have to do extensive testing?

@Dazkatmaka11 I'm not sure why you're still harassing Optus for an update mate. As soon as I verify that the FH firmware receives non-branded global updates over the air, I'm paying my US$18 and never worrying about Optus updates again.

@Dazkatmaka11

So my current Build Number is showing 9.0.0.171 (C432E10) - Which is what I understand is European Unbranded firmware. I can't comment whether Ill be now receiving OTA updates, but all traces of Optus branding are now gone (no more Optus logo on boot) - so my guess is that I am no longer dependent on Optus.

No issues with 4G or VOLTE, everything working fine.

ryballs
by Frequent Contributor
‎2018-12-20 01:31 PM

@OlegA Thanks for that, hopefully OTA does work as I don't want to pay US$18 every update. Could you also try add a new card to your google account or use Google Pay to pay for something?

Dazkatmaka11
by Frequent Contributor
‎2018-12-20 01:35 PM

Funky Huawei

OTA updates are not disabled -- they couldn't be. As long as you change your DNS back to something other than our server, the request will go to Huawei's server for an OTA. Huawei can be very slow rolling out OTAs or not roll them out to your phone. It's Huawei's fault, nothing to do with FH.

If you keep FunkyHuawei DNS settings, the update requests will be routed to FunkyHuawei's servers, so that you can installupdates selected on FunkyHuawei. Consequently, of course your update requests won't go to Huawei's server.

When you are not using the service, you should restore your original DNS settings.

@Dazkatmaka11 Sounds good, gunna do it tonight. It's a joke that Optus expects us to accept a 2 month delay for firmware updates when the phone was only just released. Imagine a year from now when the Mate 10 Pro is released, how long will the delays be then? 6 months? Screw that.
