Android Software Updates - 07/12/2017

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 07/12/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

@Optus why are security updates not of importance to you? It is well know that the note 8 and s8/s8+ security updates including KRACK fix have been released round the world . Not only are we neglected when it comes to security updates! We are also let down in the software update department! Any chance of a Christmas present for your customers and a security update by the 25th of Dec? Please? Note 8 August security patch 😞

Hey guys,

I bought the Sony Xperia XZ Premium on the plan last week as the Sony website said Android 8 was available for this model. Later I discovered it was carrier specific. As last week this update page said it was due mid December, now it says hold. Is there an ETA now on its rollout?

@deano_pieunfortunately you're in a long line asking the same question. Whats even more frustrating is that they won't specify what the delay is unless someone takes the time to ask and even then the answer tends to be vague. I have put an open challenge to them several times over Social media to at least attempt to compete on timely releases of firmware. just be thankful the XZ premium is even mentioned on the blog they've been selling it for months but it has only just been added to the list. If it wasn't for the sweet spot of reasonable pricing and coverage a lot of people would walk. but vodafone has great pricing but stuff all coverage. telstra has great coverage (not as good as they like to make out) but woeful pricing.

@deano_pieat least two members on this forum have grown impatient and flash their XZ Premium with The Stock Sony Oreo Firmware. So far reports are positive and even reports of less crashing with the removal of the yes optus widget/app

Thanks @SteveV for the helpful advice. I'm technical, but I'm really not confident with reflashing an expensive device haha - I'll just hang out for the update I guess Smiley Sad

True. @deano_pie then there is also the risk of losing other functions, although from initial reports VoLTE remains unaffected if using the stock rom.

Just an FYI of the 69 Different XZ Premium Firmware Builds Worldwide. There is only FIVE that are still on android 7.0. They are: Store Front Handsets, Service Exchange Unit, OPTUS AUSTRALIA, Pelephone Israel and TIM IT in italy. COLOMBIA, Ecuador, Chile, Slovak Republic, South Africa hell even the land of the long white cloud has Oreo. not to mention telstra and vodafone australia. Also the generic australian ROM is at December Security Update. Last i checked the optus was at September....

@SteveV Thats interesting data you've found. Its interesting as I switched back to Optus because I've had a great experience with their customer service in the past. Now I'm wondering whats going on?

Are you able to link through how you found that information?

Hey @SteveV, this afternoon we published our most recent Android software update blog here https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Android-Software-Updates-20-12-2017/ba-p/368979. Android 8.0 upgrade + KRACK fixes are on track for release in early January. @nzandes, unfortunately there’s no update on this one as of yet.
